In 2003, a small coalition of countries led by the United States invaded Iraq, at the time ruled by the autocratic Saddam Hussein. While supporters and planners of the invasion hoped to establish a liberal democracy in Iraq, their mission rapidly became a quagmire that left hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead, and gave birth to a corrupt and unstable regime that has failed to provide Iraqi citizens with security or prosperity. But to understand why America failed in its project of nation-building, it’s necessary to examine the decades leading up to the invasion, as well as the weeks and months following it. From military planning to international sanctions, political purges and serious administrative blunders, the answer emerges.
Spectacles is a love letter to democracy, its values, its caretakers, and its ideas. Around the world, individual rights and representative government are facing unprecedented attacks from the forces of reaction and revisionism. But despite liberal democracy’s real shortcomings and today’s all-too-fashionable cynicism, we remain committed to its preservation and improvement. Join us as we explore just what liberal democracy is, how it comes about, and how it can best be maintained in a changing world.

This was horrible to watch. So much missing. Not 'perhaps hundreds of thousands' of kids. 1.2 million, half of them kids (UN figures). In the 10 years 2million dead. You forgot the CIA giving Saddam out of date lists of communists that Saddam had executed. Or the CIA providing weather imagery, and chemical weapons for Saddam to use against the Iranians and eventually the Kurds. The US treatment of Iraq was beyond criminal, and the whole world saw it. That is the root at America's loss of influence around the world.

While a great video I do have to disagree with pinning William Depuy on this. While he did aid in changing Americans military strategy, he did not put it into play. He retired in 1977...and was dead by the end of the first Iraq War. He was also the head of United States Army Training and Doctrine Command for only 4 years and took several of those years to develop his ideas which were still only guidelines and not actual full on tactics to use. Those were developed over time well after he retired. To say it was due to him that America used the tactics the WAY they did, is kinda crazy. I mean, why not blame the inventors of the gun, canon, ship and plane also... Other than that nitpick, it was an enjoyable video.

I’m an Iraqi. When the 2003 war happened I was 9 years old living in Baghdad. I can never forget the images of my beloved city and hometowns landmarks being burned to the ground and I can still hear the sound of the sirens. The Iraqi people from my generation (90s) are completely lost due to this war. This war ruined our lives forever. We were scattered across the globe, we have no place to call home and no sense of belonging anywhere even in Iraq. We completely lost our identity just so the world can call us “democratic country“. My family were never big fans of saddam and his regime. But we never wanted this to happen to us. The American government ruined our lives in the name of freedom. (I have nothing against the American people actually I have many American friends. I’m talking about the government and men and women in charge).

Trouble with you Iraqis is that under that man who was wrongfully murdered over there when they finally found him, you guys were getting too darn strong . and certain countries in the middle east did not like that. same thing happened in Libya with Muammar Gaddafi. Imagine the nerve of that man, wanting all African nations to get together in an alliance and have a gold backed currency. I mean the nerve of that guy trying something like that. So when one of you lesser nations gets out of line ,you are bombed back into the stone age. We all see it and we all know it. Here as you can imagine, the government does not care what we think. @@ShankarSivarajan ...so that the most anti-American state in the world could turn Iraq into a client state? If they were cunning and Machiavellian to adopt this strategy they surely would be able to see that the majority Shia population whose state would be in shambles would fall under the sway of Iran. Hanlon's Razor explains this boondoggle. I do think there's something to the notion that America's grand strategy is to destabilize any part of Eurasia where a hegemon that would be able to project power into the Western hemisphere might arrise. It's what they did during the Cold War, it's what they're doing now in Ukraine. But Iraq in 2003 was never going to be a hegemon. Those in charge truely believed in the neocon dogma; that if they installed democracies in strategic places it would have a kind of reverse domino effect and bring about the new American century. They were very smart people, but smart people do very stupid things when little things like "belief" and "ideology" become involved.

This program lists the effect of Vietnam departing from American Colonies. The Iran Colony appears to be unmentioned? The use of forward operating bases in Iraq and Afghanistan appeared to be directed at returning the Persian Colony to the USA Control? That wayward Colony appears to continue to haunt US Dreams. The Vietnam War was a result of the USA assuming they could bomb Hanoi back to stonhenge. That failed. The US encountered a Currency Crisis in 1967 that limited the ability to continue to conduct operations in the region. The Nixon Administration changed the currency to enable more Colonial spending. Now the USA is $34 trillion in debt. The one element of the conduct of all the wars fought since the USA bombed North Korea until they had no buildings left to bomb, was the presence of Hank Kissinger. The start of the Vietnam affair seemed to get funding from the Prospect for America, written by Mr Kissinger and quoted by Congressmen and Presidents. Kissinger appeared to be a Colonial Empire Kingpin, with funding from the Standard Oil Folks. Paul Bremmer was a member of Kissinger and Associates. The Bases in the Middle East were supposed to provide easy access to Iran. The USA once again ran out of money to support the Colonial Expansion. As nation after Nation leave the support system that enables the US Currency, the ability to fund weapons production has evaporated.

All the people I asked were Shites who hated the Ba'ath party because of the persecution they endured under the Saddam regime but all of them would still say it was a huge mistake to remove them completely from government in the manner they did. Well, I am Iraqi, and I left in the 1990s. Yes, for us in Iraq, it did not really matter who led America, Democrat or Republican. Clinton did enhance the sanctions and the sanctions were devastating. I am not sure if this video's intent is to take responsibility away from the Bush family and the conservatives for what they did, but the truth for us in Iraq was that the 1991 war waged by Bush, Powell, Cheney destroyed our infrastructure. Iraq had an educated population, 24/7 electricity, a decent healthcare system, proper sewage treatment. The 1991 war destroyed all electrical plants and sewage treatment plants. We had no clean water, no reliable electricity. The sanctions prevented Iraq from rebuilding. So who REALLY ruined Iraq? It's not just the three men in this video. The sanctions impoverished Iraq. The bombings of the Bushes (both father and son) ended a modern way of life for us.

I also saw footage of drone strikes where one military person asked 'Is that a child??' It was but the mass murderers replied 'no its a dog'. Journalists were killed, cars, vans and busses were destroyed with people in them. I don't know if that footage is still available. I think it was 2011 I saw these podcasts.

I’ve never ever felt empowered enough to realistically be able to demand that. And the American media is just an ongoing infomercial for the latest cultural self righteous ‘end-all-victimhood’ feel good mood of the moment. So they’re no help. A perfect connection to make - the same dilemma at play in Germany and Japan as well. See Imperial's latest video for an example of protest against former Nazi officials being involved in the West German government. I was there in 2009. We had an interpreter who had been working with US forces for 4 years or more by that point, and I had to take him to get his badge renewed. It required background checks...iris scans, all kinds of high tech for the time. His appointment to get renewed started taking longer than the hour it normally took, and after about 4, the spook nerd came out to tell me that I needed to immediately take him under armed guard to return his uniforms, gather any personal belongings he could carry, and escort him off the base before sundown. He had been using (like many of them had) a fake Jinsiya (National ID) Turns out, he was a Baath party member, an English translator for the government before the war(s). College educated, in his 40s. He had never been a security threat, everybody in his (American) platoon loved the guy, and we just kicked him out. We had several, that I know without a doubt had been party members. Their English was too good, both spoken and written to not have been. I didn't know that the Baath party ban thing existed until then. My first day there, the outgoing Sergeant Major was giving us a tour of our area, and he said "Everything in Iraq is #$%&ed up." I wouldn't find out until years later it was our fault.

A related problem that wasn't mentioned in this video: Saddam's party consisted of Sunni muslims while most Iraqis are Shia. These two branches of islam have been at odds since the beginnings of islam. By firing them all they lost all influence to the majority shia, and found their only allies to be the iraqi offshoot of al qaeda who are also sunni. The logical outcome was that every fired sunni ex military put their expertise and stashes of weapons to use fighting for iraqi al qaeda. ISIS was the fruit of that.

@@t.f.r287 That isolationism was largely a facade. The US still spearheaded sanctions on Japan which lead to Pearl Harbor, they were monitoring the Japanese military and their expansionism (although they seriously underestimated Japan in many areas) and the US was backing the Allies since day 1. Cash and Carry, and later Lend Lease started off as ways to back the Allies, the US had "volunteers" like the Flying Tigers training and fighting alongside Allied nations, and there was soft support like sharing of intel and technology prior to and concurrent with that. The US wasn't isolationist so much as the American public just didnt want to be directly involved so the US government did what it wanted behind a veil of neutrality. Hell, the US never technically joined the League of Nations but they still had more influence than any nation aside from maybe the UK in it, they built the League and helped establish many agreements like many of the post WW1 mandates, the treaty of Versailles, and Wilson's Fourteen Points had huge influence over interwar politics. The few times when the US should have intervened or weighed in on issues but didnt also caused global problems, like the lack of opposition to Hitlers demands in places like the Sudetenland, emboldened Hitler and lack of support made the British wary and lean more towards appeasement in spite of French demands for opposition to the Nazis.

@@kirtreeves7777 Now, please check out these FACTS that are on the Web: "In 250 years of existence as a nation, the US has fought against 29 sovereign countries. (In Fact, since 1785, we have been involved, for 231 years, in some kind of war. And this wars, against all varieties of nations. From going against the Sultan of Morocco, to invading the tiny island of Grenada, 1983. Well, this means that in our entire history, we have only had 17 years of peace, and even fewer, cuz here the almost 5 years of our Civil War (Union/Confed 1861‒1865), are Not counted, since this war was not with another country, but against us. And the wars against the Native Nations of America either are not counted, for the same reason). Anyway: We fought against 29 countries. We have "Grown" 711 the size of our territory from the original 13 colonies. Our Economic, Political and Military development was established thanks to the Piracy, the Slavery, the Massacres, the Opium Trade or Cocaine Traffic, and the Weakness of many abused sovereign nations. We have provoked with total impunity, 12 Genocides and 9 Massacres, ‒inside and outside our own borders‒, and Assassinations of Gov’t. Leaders, Coups d'État and Economic Blockades in 6 UN member nations. Between 1947 and 1989, the US tried to change other nations gov’ts 73 times. It includes 66 covert Ops. And 7 overt ones. In Civil Wars: The US has taken advantage of and intervened without justification in the following Civil Wars: In Marquesas Island. (Massacre. 1813). US Forces seize Nuku Hiva Island (French Polynesia 1813), and establish here «The First US Naval Base», in the Pacific. This historical fact is important, cuz in 1813, the US had NO Territorial Land nor Maritime Rights in the Pacific Ocean, until 1848, when the US seized California and other Mexican territories facing the Pacific. In Haiti. (1813 and 1901 and then 1915-1919-1934-2001). In the Philippines. (1898-1902. Genocide. One Million people dead). In Hawaii. (1889 and 1890-1893 and 1901). In Cuba. In Angola-Namibia. (Massacre. 1980-1981-1984). Intervention in Grenada (1983). Here, in Grenada, the US Rangers attack lasted 6 hours, since the tiny Island has no Army, no Navy nor Air Force. The Ranges fought against 287 fearsome Police Officers. Actually, half of these Cops, cuz the other half had not yet come to work the afternoon shift. LOL. In Chad, support the Dictator and Genocide François “Ngarta” Tombalbaye. (1960-1972 and Intervention 1982-1986 and 2007). In Egypt, in the “Arab Spring” (2010-2012). Coup in Equatorial Guinea. In late October 2005 I was young and was already Enlisted in the US Air Force and heading to basic training in just a few weeks. I was at our annual family get-together. I remember one of my aunt's friends telling me that the night the Air Force started bombing Iraq in 2003, her and her husband sat and wept in empathy for the Iraqi people. At 19 years old and unfortunately one who had been raised in a conservative Christian upbringing where I had been taught that Muslims were essentially subhuman, I couldn't understand how she could care. 18 years later, I understand and hate who I used to be. What the US government did to Iraq is unforgivable. There are no reparations for Iraqis or convictions for the war criminals from Bush and Cheney down to the soldiers and officers that did the killing that could ever make it right

DO.not.feel.bad. I am a lifelong antiwar protestor precisely because I come from a military family. My grandfather was a nazi hunter. Yet he still outlived my bffs father who died oof 3 different cancers from Agent Orange. This isn't the first time. It is easy to look back and judge but false flags and coups were few and far in-between at that time, and we didn't have the internet to pass information. I understand how you feel and then some. I am an environmental health disaster commander. I helped John's Hopkins develop the vaccine delivery system they used for covid. Oppenheimer got off easy. But that comes to my final point. You made a moral and ethical just decision based on the available information. You made the right decisions. It was others that abused it, not you. Find peace my friend. With Iraq, they laid the propaganda on thick. I was literally like 1 of 3 people who saw through it. I had Americans screaming to my face if I don't like it, I can leave the country. Meanwhile I am a descendant of Governor Winthrop. Lol Americans were so out for blood and still on the post 9/11 high that they could have told us that Canada did it and Americans would have bought it.

The story goes further back and has to be known for context. Information now known indicates Hussein was on the CIA payroll as far back as 1959, and supported his 1963 rise to power (including U.S. and British government support). There is also evidence that the CIA supported Hussein when he gassed his own people. I think the greater story here is the recurring theme of U.S. (and often with British aid) installing hardcore dictatorships in countries where the U.S. wants to dominate the area/region and resources - Ngo Dinh Diem (Vietnam), Batista (Cuba), Noriega (Panama), and Mobutu (Congo) to name a few. Much of these happened under the guise of fighting the "COLD WAR" and seen as a necessary evil to stop Communism and face off the Soviets in proxy wars, however, when these regimes were no longer necessary or no longer supporting U.S. needs and policies, each was expeditiously removed from power and labeled "evil".

also the US had to find an excuse to go to war with someone shortly after the Cold War ended to justify its outrageous military spending. That had something to do with April Glaspie's bumbling with Saddam giving him the impression that he had the green light to invade Kuwait after years of gladly accepting US aide to fight Iran.
