In the original comics (1963), she mocked and made fun of him on uncle Ben's funeral. She was one of the main bullies along with flash and Jason and eventually get herself killed in a car-crash while obsessing over finding out spider man's true identity. Trust me it was one of the most satisfying moments in comic book history. She was an annoying fucking bitch the whole time. I mean bullying someone because his uncle died? That's fucked up.

In a way you could consider him a realist, he knows his place and is secure enough to know that while helping them could have been an admirable thing, he had no reason to because it wasn't his job or purpose to take a stand and fight back. It's the job of the person being bullied to stand up for themselves and grow.
