Huh.. apparently the bar has been set. I need more mics. and guitars. and amps. and longer hair. Wicked cool studio. Neat to see the comparisons between a 20+ yr pro studio and our little home studio when you talk about where you started with it. Very thankful that guys like you have run the trenches of all of this and are willing to share what you know so guys like us can make better informed bang for the buck choices.

Oh! Nux stuff! I've recently fallen in love with the little bastards. Bought the Overdrive and Phaser from their mini core series, and couldn't be happier. The little green box of joy in particular dovetails so well with the bigger Joyo/Harley Benton American sound and California sound pedals for either lead or heavier riffing sound. Can't recommend them enough, especially for the asking price (29 bucks for the OD and 35 for the phaser) just can't go wrong.

Speaking of mics, Glenn...have you tried the 12 gauge mics yet? One guy in Vermont, i believe, uses empty shotgun hulls as the case, and makes really nice drum mics, electric or acoustic guitar as well. they come in 3 colors, and each color connotes what that mic does. Red is an Omni, Green is small cardioid condenser, Blue is another electret cardioid condenser, which can be used with drums with lotsa room. The BLACK is a stereo, cardioid directional microphone that has dual small diaphragm electret condenser capsules positioned in x/y. Heck now he has built a ribbon mic in a spent 20mm cannon cartridge. i know it may sound jokish, but these are well made mics. i guess he has an employee or two now, but when i got mine, he was building them at his kitchen table. He probably is still available to speak with, if you ever wanted to look into that interesting, and very nice approach to mics.

Note, on patchbays: there is a price to pay for compactness and that is: you are forever tied to getting all cables from one or two suppliers. Standard jack is larger, it takes about 4 times the space but for long term use and especially for budget, get standard, never EVER buy stuff with ANY proprietary or exotic connectors. For Glenn, it makes perfect sense. In that use he can use it for couple of months until the compactness pays off enough, it saves space and as side effect time. Basically, it is worth for Glenn to buy this kind of patchbay just for the duration the cables he bought/received/were gifted lasts, then it has already paid itself back multiple times. For basic user, old school standards ONLY. Don't think it is cool looking, you need to consider that the unit will be in use a decade from now and you need to get patchcables from your local music store in a hurry. You can't wait 2 months so you can track down a bunch of them new if the manufacturer is belly up or has stopped support..

Hey Glenn! I hope to see this on the Spectre VC's! (I have a budget for complicated reasons of $150 for a mic) I'm about to be recording vocals for my solo EP soon and still don't have a mic to replace my old AT4040 I use to have but had to sell. My question is should I go with an SM58 or a budget condenser? I've been reading up and been told that the SM58 is really good for vocals on a budget and constricting the room sound which I will have some of since I'll be recording outside of a booth doing it myself and I'm not sure how to record away not having to see my computer just yet.

Man, oh, man, oh, Manischewitz, you got a shitload of mic pres! But I guess you can never have enough mic pres. You got a lot of sweet gear there, Glenn. About the only thing we own in common, though, is that inexpensive Behringer mixer, although yours looks slightly different cosmetically than mine, maybe because I bought mine earlier this year. How loud does loud have to be too blow out a condenser capsule? Every time I put a condenser right up on a loud cab, I get a bit nervous, but so far, so good. As for dead dynamics from phantom power, I've accidentally left phantom power on with a dynamic plugged in, but I've never had an issue with it, fortunately. Nameless California brand? [Cough!] Mesa [cough!] You need more opaque masking tape. B&H has Black Friday sales? I thought they had to close early on Fridays for Shabbos.
