I actually got to record a grand piano several times when I was in uni. The best and easiest way to mic a piano is to get a coincident pair of mid-range mics - preferably mics like the Rode NT-5 or AKG P-170 - and aim them at the axis of the piano lid from the right side of the piano.

A tip I learned in the Marines för time management: Get 7 pieces of paper (make sure to count them for your drummer) and label each one a different day of the week. Then go down the side labeling it from midnight to 1130 pm in half hour increments (midnight, 1230, 1, 130 etc). Now be honest with yourself and write down what you typically do at that time on that day. You'll be amazed at how much time you waste everyday.

Pease do more high end audio videos. I found the Ward Beck to be one of the best videos you've ever done!! I get that your primary target audience is the home recording enthusiast. I think that would help round out your content, and even put some things into context and perspective for people who aren't professionals, as well as appeal more towards those that do. Even as someone who makes their full time living off of recording, I have learned new ways of thinking from your channel. Your take on modern metal production without samples, amp sims, and autotune is refreshing. I tend to work mostly within the high end world of audio for TV, Film, & Commercials but do also come from a heavy music background too working predominantly on indie rock, grunge, punk genres. It's interesting to learn concepts from engineers that work with different genres and to apply them to recordings I do, even if I'm not a home recording guy but work out of commercial studio. Also please tweak your lights position a little, there is always a glare in your glasses that is super distracting.

Now I have a prs Archon 100 and I have to say, using the Friedman technique micing my own cab, ir’s just don’t cut the mustard for me anymore. I can't make it sound good without being in Studio Direct mode or if I turn off mic/cab modelling. I've heard it 100x about "Don't use IRs with real cabs"...tried different onboard IRs, the 'Pre' amp models on the 2nd half..the only high gain model that I use is the Recto w/ the Treadplate 412 cab, it sounds insane...I got it halfway between a Mark and a Rec, with 2 EQs in the signal path. Very Petrucci and older Metallica sounding. I realize I have a unique way of making it work, but it sounds SO GOOD.

Then do the same song, reamping the guitar and bass track through your best amps, using your best mics, interfaces and monitors. Maybe some experience with some folk metal/symphonic metal bands has given you opportunities in the past. Thank you and please make sweet tender love to yourself!
@matthewjones85106 жыл бұрын
AXPena eloquently put there at the end haha. I’ve never mixed flute in metal, but just spitballing if you have a direct mounted microphone on your mouth piece that will help with consistent proximity. You’ll be able to get a hotter signal without introducing a lot of room sound, which may be critical to getting you to sit strongly in the mix. It won’t sound as natural as a condenser because nobody is putting their ear directly to your mouth piece when listening to the flute, but for these porpoises I don’t suppose traditional or natural are your priorities. Even better if you can record with both and blend. Also make sure you have your own dedicated space in the stereo field. Maybe double track or copy/paste to give yourself more real estate. If it’s still not cutting through, I’d try carving out frequency content from something else that may be stepping on the frequency content of your flute. Hope any of this helps and have fun!

Glenn, here is a studio conundrum for you. We have two Peavey PV 12M monitors, but they sound completely different. One has no bass, while the other is all bass. They were bought together, as were the cables, so age should not be any issue for either. They both are connected to the mixer with exactly the same model and length of Roadhog cable, and the settings on the mixer are exactly the same for both. Everything is as close to identical as we know about, but the two monitors still sound completely different. As far as I know, if everything is exactly mirror-image-identical on both sides, then both sides should give identical results. Isn't that how physics is supposed to work? Are we doing something wrong? How can we make them sound exactly the same?

I've never really noticed anything "wrong" with them, but like I said, I don't really have any reference here, so I'm really curious what you or anyone else thinks about the M-Audio monitors in comparison to others at similar sizes and/or price points.

Glenn! You're show's been great for improving my recording technique and thank you very much for that, but where can I learn about live sound? I've been mixing bands in bars and small auditoriums for about 5 years now in between being a lighting and video tech but I feel that I'm hitting a wall due to being self-taught. I know live sound isn't your area but I don't even know who to ask. HELP ME, GLEN

Maybe you could do big studio etiquette and techniques. Pitfalls that waste time. The difference between top end mics and preamps. How the room size acts with different mics. I would love to see high end studio vs. your top end home gear. Maybe also the value of picking the right engineer for your band.

Hey Glenn, What is your favorite guitar tone in a metal album? Personaly I love the sound of any of Gojira's stuff and have been in love with Animals As Leader's recent albums but I'm not sure how much of it is technique and how much is gear. Fuck you :)

The iZotope RX suite is very nice. In a past incarnation, I did audio recording/restoration work for film & radio and RX is the gold standard there. The technology in it is awesome. I remember one project for this amateur film that had a failure of their primary recording system (amateur sound guy), and only had the audio from the DSLR camera...but it was very windy that day and you couldn't hear the dialog. I was able to eliminate virtually all of the wind noise and pull the dialogue out so that they could use it as work vocals (amateur director...WTF? Lost script!?!?!) for doing ADR later...grrr, fixing things for amateurs... Also, speaking, and the Sony MDR-7506 headphones, they are considered classics for audio recording in the Radio/TV/Film world. For them, basically spoken word & environmental/sound effects, the 7506's don't fuck with the sound, they are repairable, and they last forever. In Radio, they seem to prefer the AKG K 240 as they somewhat more musical. I have a variant of 240s that are very good that I used for recording news readers and interviews for a show I worked on at CKCU FM. And as for RF noise when recording near your computer...yes, you can get awesome pickups that reject that (I have a set of hand made Evans Eliminator 2 Series pickups that can cut through that shit), or you can fix your computer. Most PCs and Macs these days come in plastic cases with SDA in the way of radio frequency (RF) shielding. Dump your LED lighted case with the window on the side, and get an all-metal case. Get some RF shielding material and line the case with it...or, if you can't change your case (grumblegrumble....Mac....grumble) then build what is called a "Faraday Cage" and put your computer in it. It will shield almost all of the RF from your computer. It won't shield all of it since you need to hook up various things via cables to it and thus there will be a (small as possible) hole in it...but it will get at least 90% of it. And for the sake of the gods themselves, don't use WiFi (aka RF noise) on your computer in your studio!!! Use wired ethernet!!!

Iron Maiden of all bands also mixed Book of Souls on Headphones. They are even selling their custom voiced headphones they used for mixing. So it's not only home recording bands that afford Monitors. Huge bands also use them

Ok.. who was the mix engineer? How many years of experience does he have? Most people watching this show are beginners. See the difference?
@olafvanrijnsbergen11776 жыл бұрын
@@SpectreSoundStudios I'm Pretty sure it was Kevin Shirley, working together with Steve Harris himself. Its true that a lot of people watching are beginners, but you're a beginner, you can neither mix on Monitors nor Headphones. Because well, you'd still have to learn. And if you're starting from blank, I'd imagine it would take just as much time to learn how to mix on headphones, as it would take to learn how to mix on Monitors.

Hey Glen, i get what you're saying RE: the text about the pro gear VS home studios. You're in the position to show many of us what this stuff is about. So even if it's not feasible for most i think it'd be an education. Maybe think of it that way. I'm keen

On eliminating radio interference you could try el cheapo solution and buy pack aluminium tape and make faraday cage or shield behind guitar pick ups and on rehearsal situation one can try turning around and see where the humming stops and see if you can turn guitar head in similar relation in opposite direction.

A note to the dude who has noise issues: you might want to make sure that all your ins and outs ( with the exception of your guitar cable) are balanced.

A compromise that will produce a lot of work between the low- and high-end recording stuff: Do the same thing in 2 different ways. For example micing up the grand piano, processing etc - for pros and for newbs. Might be an interesting comparison. But yeah, I'm aware that this is a ton of work.

Hey Glenn, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Direct-to-Disc process that directly records to a vinyl-disc cutting lathe while the musicians are playing live. I would love to see/hear you do an A/B comparison with Direct versus the new soul sucking all digital tracking method By Crom and Mitra, Cheers and Fuck on you.

Hey there Glenn, The first time I got into a recording studio was when I was 17 and we definately made tons of bad choices. Went out of town, the guy ended up being a cheesy Pop prducer that applied autotune to everything and our bassist never travelled with us. Second time we went local cause we wanted to support our small town studio. Out of the 5 tracks we recorded we released ONE and it wasnt even good. Also the guy charged us hours of zero work cause he was too stoned to realise he had a distortion plugin on the master channel. Because of those experiences (and more) I've got to a point where I got some kind of studio-phobia. Is it normal?

15:10 Why exactly is that Radial DI box in the signal chain there? Is a guitar amp being used at the same time for monitoring? Also, one must wonder what input level's coming out of the preamp of that particular input...

2:00 it's because the music industry is headed in the home studio direction. Nobody has the money to go record on an SSL 30 miles away from your house, that sounds just as good as a focusrite with an SSL plugin or 500 series ssl eq- how do I know this? Because I've recorded extensively on an SSL 900 aws and a G4000+ in big fancy rooms and iso booths VS done home demos straight into my computer and the computer actually sounds less muddy
@meangenecharbonneau6 жыл бұрын
I don't think the industry is headed in the home studio direction. Having affordable, good sounding gear is making home studios a viable option for a lot of music that would otherwise never be heard. My favourite albums were not likely recorded in home studios. The new Tool album is not being recorded with free amp sims and a Scarlet interface. MY next project might be, but wouldn't it be nice to get a glimpse at the top end of things and use that as a reference for what we're trying to make our budget set ups do? Maybe Glenn should do a "sound like X on a budget" series, like Anderton's does with guitar gear.

About the noise near computer thing... I would suggest to use an iPad or Android tablet (in terms of screen space, it should also work with a cellphone) and use Reaper's Web Interface to controle it remotely. Sure, that would only apply for Reaper users I guess.

The Beyerdynamic DT1770 Pro are one of the best headphones ever and are amazing for reference when mixing and checking for stereo width. You have to check them out Glen at some point! But your right nothing gives you a better image of your mix than a good pair of monitors. For me the neumann KH120A are definitely the best option in the price range under a thousand bucks. Greets from Germany love the show!
