Sapience is actually defined by a certain amount of self awareness and deeper thought, not necessarily by intelligence comparable to ours.

It's really just a fancy term we made up to make ourselves seem special. No one can really agree on what it means because any definition is post hoc. Even the definition you gave has the obvious and impossible to answer follow up question of "what amount?"

Scrolled down to say this. It is why it is a big deal when an animal species consistently recognizes itself in a mirror and why whether or not Coco the gorilla is actually communicating through ASL or making the symbols her keeper expects of her is such a massive controversy. Those are signs of sapience.

fun fact: sapient predators and prey are alredy a thing on earth, orcas commonly prey on smaller dolphins, both can feel human-like emotions and have a sense of self
@toyotawitha20mm35Ай бұрын
its still disputed if this is true or not, i personally i agree that they are sapient beings but it hasnt been fully scientifically proven yet, so take that fact with a grain of salt. unlike other land dwelling animals , orcas cannot really show their intelligence to us like other animals because they cannot manipulate the environment around them, and their languages are so alien to us that it will take years before we even begin to understand them. i am not sure if an orca has a moral compass or not, which is something i think is a requirement of being sapient. as i said this is entirely a possibility, i wouldnt be surprised at all if they were truly sapient but its not set in stone.

Correction: Gravity gets stronger the closer you approach a planet's center. If you were halfway between the center of the Earth and the surface, you'd experience four times the gravity you experience at the surface. However, at the dead center of the Earth, gravity is zero, as the gravity is acting on all sides.
@omnisundae5 ай бұрын
You’re right 😳 I thought the mass between the surface and the core made a significant difference, but apparently not. I don’t know where I learned that it did, but I definitely shoulda just googled it 🥲🥲

We're sapient and sentient, right?
@omnisundae11 ай бұрын
According to google, sapience is "the ability to apply knowledge or experience or understanding or common sense and insight". So yeah, I'd like to think we're sapient; and there might even be other animals on earth that have sapience. Humans are definitely the ones they had in mind when they defined sapience though. Homo sapiens and alla that. Sentience is "the ability to percieve or feel things", which is much more broad. The reason I don't say "sentient predators and prey" or anything like that is because most mammals are probably sentient. Probably most birds too, it's just something that comes with a more developed brain. Short answer: Yes, we're sapient and sentient
@BrunoMaricFromZagreb7 ай бұрын
The simplified version is that "sentient" is for anything that can think,while "sapient" is exclusively for people.For an example,take a look at both fictional & real-life AI,& you'll notice that it's pretty easy to notice which machines are people.
@Speed0017 ай бұрын
@BrunoMaricFromZagreb Yeah, i like to think of sapient as self-aware, metacognition. Sentient is just being able to think.

Ngl this video was insanely disappointing. It's just your worldbuilding project that has almost nothing to do with spec evo. I also expected you to actually delve into the subject of the video as in intelligent prey and predator and their relationships. This probably sounds mean, but you pretty much clickbaited people. I would love to watch the video that the title suggested, but unfortunately that does not exist.
@omnisundae7 күн бұрын
How could I include more spec evo? I’ve got criticism like this before and done my best to get more in depth with that aspect of things and describing as much as I can. I hope my newer videos are better, but if not could you give me some pointers on what to add? I remember talking in some depth about how Crazimal culture deals with Padogs being sapient, but I agree that it was a bit shallow and I plan on talking about that more in a future video like I did with the Anthropology video on Sapient Dragons. I’m sorry you didn’t like the video, and I’m trying my best to make good and better content ❤️
