Peter Norman should be celebrated in Australia.National holiday or something of that sort. Or at least mentioned in School curriculum, he's an inspiration and Australians should be proud of him.

Shock - Australian's maybe are proud of him (if they indeed know of him) but Europeans aka British were never proud of him or his action's. Hence why Peter was ostracised from The Olympics and within Australia. Remember that Aboriginals are the indigenous people of Australia.

Peter Norman was one of the extremely few white people I admired. I was 14 years old in 68 when John Carlos and Tommy smith bought worldwide attention to how black people were murdered in the USA and especially by the police like today. This police brutality is not new to black people. I always admired Peter Norman because he didn't have to put his life on the line to help the blacks and aborigines. I still have a love and tremendous amount of respect for Peter Norman. To Peter Norman may your name ring forever for justice and equality. You are my main man.

+TemplarX2 Peter actually didn't want to be featured in that statue in the US. He specifically told the university that built the statue that he wanted his place to be empty so that others could stand in his place next to Carlos and Smith like he did in 1968.

There is now a statue of Peter Norman in Albert Park in Melbourne. It was unveiled last year. About bloody time I say. Peter is finally getting the recognition he deserves.Terrible shame this was not done many years earlier, before he passed away. Huge respect to Peter Norman.

This was in the Federation Chamber (which is a secondary chamber for debate) which is why it is empty. Totally agree that it should have been in the House of Representatives on indulgence from the Prime Minister, rather than in the secondary chamber from a backbencher.

As an American I too feel shame for the actions of my country's past. I didn't personally commit those abhorrent atrocities to human rights but the shame is a motivator to see that it doesn't happen again. For the most part Australia is a country packed with good people, Peter's treatment is indeed a dark stain in their past. There's no time machine. All we can do is ensure that it doesn't happen again.

It's a sin that the university did not include him in the statue. This man literally stood up for justice and freedom for 2 men he didn't really know. He stepped forward to help these men try to change the world. He gave up his earthly like to help with a struggle he did't have too. Now his simple life became a struggle for him, the rest of his life. It always bothers me that people have to die b4 they get the respect they deserve. Norman actually declined to be on the statue because he insisted that his place be left unoccupied so that others viewing the statue could "take a stand" against racism. Today, visitors from around the world act on the sculpture’s signature invitation to take a stand by posing in the silver medal position where Australian Olympian Peter Norman stood in 1968, an arrangement discussed with and approved by Norman before his death in 2006.

RIP Peter Norman it's ashamed that he was treated better by the American track and field committee and the American track and field athletes like Michael Johnson who gave him a first class treatment in his own country by members from another country. Peter Norman is the greatest Australian sprinter to ever grace that country and he should have been celebrated by his country with that silver medal but instead was slandered. I'm glad that he's getting the recognition that he deserves and as the American track and field fans he will always be a legend here in the states.
