My great grandparents are still alive thank the lord, but I am to inherit most of my great grandfathers heirlooms. This emotional number about an elderly man looking back at his life was written by Johnson as a tribute to his grandfather. The country singer-songwriter explained to Roughstock: "He died in 2000; I've got memories of him. He didn't know I was a songwriter or a singer. He just knew I could sing and write and that I was moving Nashville to get it done. He died probably the first eight months that I was in town. I've always wanted to pay tribute back to thank him for the lessons growing up, all the conversations with him. Nobody ever pays attention to that stuff until they're gone I'm afraid. I had a long way to go, I wanted him to be around a lot longer, I wasn't ready for him to go. So it's kind of appropriate way to introduce this album to the public." This was named Song of the Year at the 2009 Academy of Country Music Awards. In his acceptance speech, Johnson said: "I thank these two guys up here - Lee Miller and James Otto - for helping me write this song. Thanks to my band, too, for going in on an off day and producing an off record." Later in the year, the song won the 2009 CMA Song of the Year Award. Lee Miller told the story behind the song's inspiration for the book Nashville Songwriter: The Inside Stories Behind Country Music's Greatest Hits: by Jake Brown. "You look for the phrase that gives you a reason to write a song," he said. "And I was telling Jamey a story about some event that I'd been to, and it was a story … about Nashville back in the '60s and some pictures in black and white … I'm talking, and he's kind of zoned out … and he said, 'There's your idea. You think that's somethin', you should've seen it in color.'" He added "Those ideas are hard to come by … At that point, just don't mess it up; just write it correctly." Miller and Johnson, along with James Otto began talking about their own grandparents, and the song stemmed from memories of their grandfathers. "In a lot of ways, it's a song about our grandfathers," Miller said. The second verse ("In the middle of hell in 1943...) is about the experiences of Lee Miller's grandfather during World War II. Girl, I cried right along with you. This song does it to me every single time. My mom died a month shy of 54, I was 23 years old at the time (I'm 53 now). I have a million questions I never thought to ask while she was alive, I was too young to know I needed to ask questions that only she could answer. My dad died two years later so I was an orphan at 25. My parents were immigrants, I have no aunt's, uncle's, grandparents, cousins... no one, so the history died with them. So, yeah, songs like this make me cry and that's okay. It's a beautiful song and he really has a very emotive voice so it just makes it that much better.

My dad spent most my childhood in the Navy, my mom was a Marine, after that they both spent many years off traveling for construction jobs. So I spent most of my time with my grandparents who were children of the great depression and WW2. So this song resonates with me so hard. Looking at those old pictures and hearing stories of how my grandparents grew up through all of that hardship. Looking at all of the black and white pictures of them in their teens and twenties as they worked themselves to the bone starting a new family...you'd have no idea how hard it really was for them through all the smiles they had on their faces as they were working sugar cane or cotton fields or caring for all of their siblings who tended not to make it.

When my Dad passed, the funeral home, at my request, made a video using this song, with pictures I supplied to them from my Dad's life. When I first heard this song years ago, it reminded me of my parents even then. They took extra time and made it really well. It was so good. A real tear jerker....and it's one of my most prized possessions. My Dad was a Korean War vet....Sergeant First Class. He was in the group that took Heartbreak Ridge. He actually went to the top twice....beat back down the first time, regrouped, and took it on their second try up. He came back home, put himself through night school, learned how to be a machinist, and kept the job he earned from that, for over 50 years in the same place. Him and my mother....who both grew up working in the cotton fields that Jamey spoke of....were married for 63 years. She passed away on his birthday, and he passed away on hers. He was my best friend and my hero. I miss them both every day. I haven't been able to watch that video again yet. It's been almost 3 years. This world we live in, and all the decent things we have in it, have come from people like them, that led those hard scrabble lives to build this country. I wish I could shake Jamey's hand. He has no idea how many people he has touched with this song.

This beautiful song continues to bring a tear to my eye every time I hear it. The song reminds me vividly of my childhood spending time with my grandparents. As a family, we always spent time sitting and talking. My grandpa told lots of stories which included how he, as a Texas rancher, struggled during the Great Depression. My grandfather was very frugal even though he worked all his life and had a nice retirement salary. He fashioned tools from scraps and made due with what he could scavenge. He had a cellar filler with cans and cans of screws, nails, nuts and bolts and so much more stuff that he could have had his own hardware store. When I got older, it struck me why he was the way he was; The Great Depression. You learned to live with less and nothing went to waste. Some of that actually rubbed off on me. 😢😊

One of my favorite songs of all time. Played this for my grandfather years ago. He was a cotton farmer, served in WW2, and married my grandmother in June 😊

Amber, your reaction was so raw and so so genuine. You had me tearing up a little just watching your reaction. You have such a beautiful, gentle soul.

This song also made me think of a song by Trace Atkins, called You're Gonna Miss Us. It lines up with your thoughts about one day your kids being grown and looking back. I love this song but don't listen to it often because it makes me cry too much, thinking about how time is flying by being a mom. lol

I'm 57, recently a new grandfather (twins), I'm telling those stories to my children so they can pass them on. I've lived a life better than many of my peers. I am thankful to be reasonably healthy but I know, I have less days left than I have had. Tell those stories, share those memories. We only die when people stop telling stories about us. Love the COLD reaction. Sometimes I am frustrated that people who react to videos and songs do not know who these artists are but this reaction was awesome because you were caught up in the emotion of this amazing song. For what its worth, George Jones' "he stopped loving her today" is considered to be the greatest country song, if that is true, this is number 2 for me. Great job and well done! Keep up the good work.

This song takes me back to my childhood. My Papaw was a WWII vet and oh the stories he told us of being on the Burma Road. We grandkids just sat around him at his feet and would listen to those stories over and over. We loved them! And he had a box full of pictures in the top of his closet! Every single time we were there, we asked to look at these pictures that we've seen a hundred times and hear Papaw tell us about them. Such sweet precious memories.

This is also my first time hearing this song, and it brings to mind all the old photos my grandparents would always show me. One of my faves is the day they got married: she in a gorgeous wedding gown and him in his Royal Canadian Air Force uniform. I’m really missing them now. 🥹💜

My mother's family comes from Appalachia and we are blessed to have the number of old black and white photos of my ancestors that we do. Wish we had more from my father's side.

Jamey Johnson is a great artist. “High cost of living “ and “can’t cash my checks” are two my favorites that would be great reactions. He puts on a great show if you get a chance see him live.
