Same I used to listen to this with my gpa who was a Vietnam vet (101st 68-70) and he used to sing “that was my machine gunner ole Bobby lee” Private Lee was Kia in May 1969. In my grandfather’s words “ the last time I saw him he was covering the withdrawal of the wia and Kia. When we found him he was dead in his last known spot with only one clip left. Private lee should have one a Medal of Honor that day, hell they all should have” he wrote that in his journal that he kept throughout the war

My Grandma's husband is one of the last surviving WWII vets around, and whenever I hear that line in this song, "This one here's taken over seas in the middle of Hell in 1943" it always brings a tear to my eye because of how good we got it in the modern day and age and how many people either don't care or almost spit on that. That doesn't sit well with me.
@silverfox4055

djjazzyjeff123 My grandfather was in WWII and I heard all sorts of stories from my father who also was in the Army and I happened to be born 15 years before he retired. Getting all these stories and whatnot always made me super interested as to what happened back then cause my grandfather was a gunner in a B17 Bomber so he was hardly ever on the ground. All cause of grandpa, I’m beginning my schooling in military history, more specifically WWI and WWII. Going to base my life around that to make sure that they’re not forgotten. I hate how all of the hardships like that are being pushed aside today and can’t stand the thought of it suddenly disappearing as though it never even happened.

This is one of my FAVORITE country songs. I love the grit to his voice as he explains his story. The guitar is amazingly soulful giving hints of both passion and longing for those gone times. I'm glad you guys did this one. I thought I clicked fast when I saw metallica but this one I nearly cracked the sound barrier. I'm glad you guys broke it down like that n had the thoughts that you did. Keep it up.

@@griffinwiegert527 its okay, it was awesome that they appreciated the song. Everyone has a different history and to some it may mean different things. Especially based on age, for older people and for the newer generation. For me, I hope we can get to a place like in WWII where we all came together as a nation and believed in freedom and would die for it to protect those we do not even know, no matter where we came from. We were all Americans.

I remember singing this one for my grandmother once, and in the middle of the song she said, “That’s the story of my life” as tears welled up in her eyes. I will never forget that moment as long as I live.

It something too many of us can relate to and to certain extent. The pain and atruggle is something u have to see in color. I've loves this song since the first time i heard it and hope I can ahare more good parts then bad with my kids and grandkids when they get old enough to start to understand

This song is especially relevant in today's Instagram driven world (the song is from 2008). People are so worried about capturing photos of their experiences that they forget to just live in that moment. The old man in the song is explaining the parts of the story that the photo can't capture. A picture's worth a thousand words, but an experience is worth a thousand pictures, so don't forget to live in the moment!

As a young man while visiting my grandparents we would always sit around the kitchen table and my grandma would bring out a photo album along with an old hat box full of old photos, we would all go through them and ask questions and reminisce about family and how we got to where we were.
