I have noticed more and more people saying product-ivity rather than pro-duct-ivity. It grinds me because it sounds incorrect. Glad to know it is. As more and more people mispronounce these words, they seem to become new norms. The past 4 years have been pure h3ll on American “English” language.

Pretty much, language changes over time and what's "correct" for pronunciation and also usage shifts too. But there's a period where it can be painful! I for one cannot accept "literally" as meaning both literally and figuratively, thus rendering it useless in my opinion.

@@SpeechModificationI hadn’t heard about the “literally”. Not good.

GRINDS MY GEARS, too! UGH, why are people doing this? I hear everyone calling vacation "holiday," and the collective term for college is no longer college, it's "uni" or "university," and grocery is "market". WHAT?? Why are Americans culturally appropriating UK... it's so dumb and distracting.

Finally, someone remembers our pronunciation actually works. Now my new gripe: The Disappearing "e". Not silent e. Disappearing "e" which has now become "uh" or "a" as in "Bafore" It's like fingernails on a blackboard to me. Many many words no longer are pronounced with appropriate long e sound. "The" no longer uses long "e" before words beginning with a vowel. When did that happen? Instead of thee apple, we get tha apple and so on. Network news broadcasters were the last bastion of hope. That has all gone .Pftttttttt! Thanks for your noble efforts. I fear they are destined to be lost on the majority of us. Just like the sports "professionals" who say strenth and athalete and Heighth. But they're making money, so it's OK. Right?

Well, I'll admit to being guilty of using schwa in a lot of places, and teaching that it's okay to do, because my focus is on helping people have fluent speech. Much as it can bother me when I hear errors, I do know that language and pronunciation are fluent and naturally change over time. But yes, it's weird how certain errors get so widespread.

I say productivity with a short o. Is that a common pronunciation in the US? I live in the southeastern US.

Yes, it is. I found several variations within the US on this word. British English uses the /ɑ/ like our American pronunciation of "product," and typically East coast dialects tend to have some vowel similarities to British pronciation. The dictionary I use most which matches my midwest/northwest pronunciation uses the long /oʊ/, (learnersdictionary.com/definition/productivity) but others have /ɑ/ which is what I use in the word "product." (learnersdictionary.com/definition/product) Here's one US dictionary with the alternate pronunciation: www.macmillandictionary.com/us/pronunciation/american/productivity

Gotta respectfully disagree with this analysis :-) Either it creates a rule for which most/all similar words are exceptions, or no one is following the rule in applicable cases. Cases in point with the most similar words I know: Connective becomes 'kah-nek-TI-vi-tee, not 'koh-nek-TI-vi-tee Conductive becomes 'kahn-duk-TI-vi-tee, not kohn-duk-TI-vi-tee Those words have identical numbers of syllables, stress patterns and first-syllable vowel pronunciations as productive > productivity, and I'm unaware of any counterexamples, so the analysis in this video strikes me as... flawed?
