There's something about this group of 1960s vintage actors - I sometimes wonder if Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern all went to the same school of acting crazy, because when they have to do crazy, they really go for it.

They all understood what being on acid did to a person as they were in the Hippie culture. In fact, Dennis Hopper was not able to get work for many years due to his addictions. He overcame them midway into his life and was able to resume his acting career. Same thing happened to Robert Downey Jr. He spent 19 months in prison due to drug usage and was uninsurable, but Mel Gibson gave him work and he has been sobered ever since.

While Speed was in production, Keanu Reeves' close friend, actor River Phoenix(Stand By Me, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) died from a drug overdose at the Viper Room nightclub in Los Angeles on October 31st, 1993. Following Phoenix's death, Speed director Jan de Bont changed the shooting schedule to work around Reeves and give him scenes that were easier to do while he was mourning the loss of his friend.

There’s a video series called “The Art of the Scene” and they cover the bus jump. They point out that it doesn’t matter if it’s not possible because the writers/director/actors did a good enough job making us care about them. You're correct, Jen. The bus jump would not be possible in real life. lol 😂The bus jump sequence was done in one take, with the bus actually jumping off of a ramp that was constructed to give the bus extra lift so it could jump the full fifty feet. Digital computer effects were used to create the gap in the freeway, as it had already been constructed. The first attempt at the jump was unsuccessful. Everything possible was removed from inside the bus to make it lighter, but the stunt driver crashed the bus, making it unusable. A second attempt with a second bus two days later was successful, but the bus traveled farther than the twenty feet that was expected and crashed on top of the camera filming the scene. Luckily, a second camera placed further away recorded the scene. The show Mythbusters attempted to recreate the jump and proved that it would not have been possible in real life.

A great action classic movie. I miss the 90s in action movies, everything was filmed in real at that time and with practical effects and miniatures (the subway was a miniature), the plane and the bus explosion was real. I recommend for next: FACE OFF (1997), another classic full action movie with John Travolta and Nicholas Cage.

every stunt/explosion/etc was more or less real - they even launched the bus off a ramp into the air and then used mostly practical effects, a little digital trickery, and editing to make it seem like it was jumping the gap in the freeway - and yes keanu did basically all of his own stunts

"How many buses were used in this thing? Cheese and rice!" Fourteen buses in all, Jen. Speed used eleven GM New Look buses (TDH-5303) and three Grumman 870 buses. Two of them were blown up, one was used for the high-speed scenes, one had the front cut off for inside shots, and one was used solely for the "under bus" shots. Another bus was used for the bus jump scene, which was done in one take.

I heard that there was once a version of the script where it was Harry who put the bomb on the bus. He was forced to retire after the elevator bomber incident, because of the wounds he suffered from that. Mainly the bullet wound he got when Jack shot him in the leg. But when Jeff Daniels was cast as Harry, the producers of the movie or the studio thought that he would be "too likeable" and the audience wouldn't buy him as a villain, so the script was changed to having Dennis Hopper's character be the antagonist for the entire movie.

One of my favorite Dennis Hopper roles besides this is in Hoosiers. Gene Hackman plays a basketball coach at a small Indiana high school in the 50s and Hopper is his assistant coach who is a drunk. Hoosiers is based on a true story and even if you aren’t a sports fan it is a great movie.

The writer of this movie had a fixation with the number '50'. Go above '50', the bomb is armed. Go below '50', the bomb goes off. The number of the bus is 2525 - 25 + 25 is 50. The gap in the freeway is 50 feet.

Yes, Jen, Keanu Reeves did many of his own stunts in Speed. He was initially nervous about the many action sequences, but became more involved as the filming progressed. Keanu even did the stunt where Jack jumps from the Jaguar onto the bus, rehearsing the stunt in secret after director de Bont initially objected to the stunt. On the day the stunt was filmed, Reeves did the stunt himself, reportedly terrifying director de Bont.

I had just moved to Los Angeles with my mother when this movie was being filmed. One day we were driving in Hollywood and drove past the section of Hollywood boulevard used as the location for the subway crash finale. (A one block section of the well known downtown Hollywood tourist area in front of Mann's Chinese Theater was closed off for the filming.) I could see the faux subway exit building (where the subway train smashes out of at the end) half a block away and wondered, at the time, what all was going on there. Needless to say when this movie premiered I found out! Anyway, Speed is a classic with a great cast, great direction, and is definitely one of my favorite 90's action films.

Fun Fact: Joss Whedon did an uncredited rewrite of the Speed screenplay because Keanu Reeves didn't like his character, SWAT officer Jack Traven, at first. The character was written as being much older and the dialogue was more whimsical like previous action heroes John McClane(Die Hard) and Martin Riggs(Lethal Weapon). Having worked with LAPD and other law enforcement officers on previous films, like Point Break, Reeves felt that the character needed to be more professional and less of a stereotypical wisecracking action hero, so Whedon was hired to rewrite the script and dialogue, although he received no writing credit.

Gotta recommend 1984's "Red Dawn", all things considered going on in the world today. 15:50 - Those barrels are designed to save lives. They act as a buffer to bring a vehicle at high speed to a stop as safely as possible. That's why they are filled with water, and the lids pop off immediately. The water absorbs the impact while it splatters, and the car/truck/bus doesn't hit a solid object which is likely to kill those in the vehicle.

But you can see that she has both shoes on her feet as they pull her out when the elevator drops and also when she says "my shoe" you can see the that she is actually carrying the shoe in her hand. I'm not sure if that was something that was suggested on the day and the director threw it in there or if the actress just wanted to get one more line in for her small part, and she just forgot to throw the shoe off camera before they said "Action!"

Before the more common use of GGI, most undoable life size scenes were filmed with miniatures filmed at high speed, any close-up of those scenes will identifie supposed lifesize objects as miniatures plus the movement of the scenes will appear a bit slow because of the high frame rate, when well done they appear realistic but on closer look they can't pass as the real thing.

I see from some of the other reaction videos you have made that you are not averse to screening the older movies. Have you ever considered watching, then, the 1962 classic, "The Miracle Worker," starring two actresses who both won Oscars for their portrayals (Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke). It is a spectacular biopic that tells the moving story of teacher Annie Sullivan and her extraordinary work with her famous deaf and blind protege, Helen Keller. It has been remade a few times since but I think the original is the best. And if you did review it you'd be the first I think to do so. Two others from that time period, featuring Oscar winning performance, that still hold up today are "Lilies of the Field" starring Sidney Poitier and "To Kill a Mockingbird" starring Gregory Peck (w/Robert Duvall in one of his earliest roles).

In the deleted scenes they mention that there is a time gap between the first encounter with the elevator and Payne blowing up the bus after the coffee shop visit. The movie would have you believe the events were days apart, but the time between them is much longer giving Payne the time to plan everything again. Speed 2 tries to build on the popularity of the first one, even though it takes place on a cruise ship. Sandra Bullock returns but I think it would have been better if they brought Keanu back and not introduced another character. Both of Sandra Bullocks movies with the Miss Congeniality theme were also funny.

The bartender lady is Sandy Martin who plays Grama (Carlinda Dynamite) from Napoleon Dynamite. I thought she looked familar. Decapitation can be funny. As disturbing as it is I was laughing right along with you.

Never seen Speed?! Holy crap! There IS a sequel, 'Speed 2: Cruise Control'. Also this movie could have been even better if there was a twist that revealed that Sandra Bullock's character is actually Dennis Hopper's daughter and was involved in the whole event

Memory: this movie came out the summer that O.J. Simpson did a slower trek down an L.A. freeway, also with police escort.

If you want to see Dennis Hopper not be a villain, watch Easy Rider. Plus, it's a 1969 film and I think you'd love it.

Not based on a book, but it's inspired by Die Hard, but instead of taking play in a skyscraper it takes place on a bus, where a SWAT officer must save a bus load of passengers before a madman's bomb will explode. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Harrison Ford, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Tom Hanks, and Alec Baldwin were considered for the lead, until Reeves was cast The tagline, "This summer, get ready for rush hour."

Hi Jen ! Yes, there is a sequel. Most people are prompt to say it's an awful sequel (RIP subtility : dawn of time - 2000). Sure it's not as good as the first, with a lot of thing that can take you out of it, but I sincerely liked it as an OK and quite fun action movie.

Speed does have a sequel, Jen. Speed 2: Cruise Control, which came out in 1997 and was a flop. Sandra Bullock co-starred with Jason Patric. Keanu Reeves did not return for the sequel, which was basically just a ripoff of both Speed and Die Hard on a cruise ship.

Fun Fact: While the majority of Speed's story takes place on the bus, the opening sequence in the office building elevator shaft was a nod to Die Hard(1988), and the final sequence on the LA subway train was an homage to Runaway Train(1985).

I can suspend my disbelief for almost all of this movie, but not for the jump. There's no way you can jump a vehicle across a level gap without some kind of ramp to give it extra height. No matter how fast the vehicle is going, the instant there's no more ground under it, gravity will take over and start pulling it down. If both sides are level with each other, it will always end up lower at the other side than it was at the start. In order to cross the gap before losing too much height to gravity, it would have to be traveling at a speed of several hundred miles per hour. I won't pretend to be able to figure out the math, but it would basically have to cross the gap instantly, which would require insane speed.
