How I did mine: I live off-grid in a solar powered house I built myself singlehandedly. Finally figured out how to charge my model 3 long range from the sun. I have four 300 watt solar panel gets full sun all day. I have a Growatt inverter which has an 80 amp MPPT charge controller built-in. I Have configured panels serial/parallel for 24 volt output. Growatt is split phase so it provides 240 volt output.Then I have four BattleBorn batteries. Get 28 miles per hour. $1250 for panels, $750 for Growatt inverter, $3000 for batteries, misc cables fuses $250, total $5,250. Actually anticipating charging my cybertruk next year.

I nearly froze to death with zero heat source when electricity was off in 0° weather and my car was Dead from the cold so no chance of warming up from that either. I made it through by wearing multiple layers of clothing, 4 pairs of socks, a hat, and blanket on. Was afraid to go to sleep during the coldest hours thought I may not wake up. There's a huge wave of excitement around off grid solar. I live in an area subjected to frequent power outages so backup is important to me. However in urban areas where the supply is more stable I can't see the benefits of spending thousands of dollars on redundant systems. Yes it's a cute idea but an expensive indulgence.

Thanks for the video. My interest has been to build an off-grid system (avoid permits and AHJ) just to charge the car by capturing solar during the day when I am not at home, and then using the stored energy in the batteries to charge the EV. Figure i will need 5-6kwh of storage to be relatively comfortable to generally not rely on moving over the the grid. I really want to find a solution that lets me go DC all the way, no wasteful DC to AC back to DC. I see Solaredge has a EV charger but not sure if it runs off the DC or AC side of the inverter.

I don't understand why more people in California don't already do setups like this. I live in Northern Ontario and even I have a small setup like this. Solar is not that great here though, the days are too short. I do eventually want to buy a big property so I have room for a larger array, like 10-20kw vertically mounted so I don't have to take snow off them every morning, and then a big ass battery bank. With enough storage I think it would be doable here, but its trickier. In places like California it's a no brainer.

A lot of my friends in California say off grid and battery backup disconnects are illegal. And grid ties go down in a blackout so they don’t back feed the lines and hurt repair people. So having solar is useless until laws change.

That sucks, I heard Florida is the same. Laws like that are retarded. Off grid systems should be legal. Governments pretend to care about the environment but minute something can threaten big oil they make it illegal.

so will.. just a thought.. you have both off and ongrid inverters. in case of grid outage, your ongrid inverter would shutdown automatically as it is not getting a sine wave. now and endulge me.. you turn on you offgrid inverter, and disconnect the grid, thereby creating a grid and a sine wave for your ongrid inverter to sync up to.. should work to keep both inverters alive and kicking.. test it :)

I’ve had friends in California say that not only do grid ties go down in a power outage but it’s illegal to have a off grid system and/or a disconnect battery backup attached to your grid tie for temporary blackouts. They’ve also told me that if you make more than you use your taxes go up like crazy because your now concidered a power plant like the big smoke stacks. I told them to see if solar generators are illegal as well in their areas. I know you’re in Nevada, but what do you think about this?

@@6foot8jesuspilledpureblood82 Diesel is what's needed. Electric motors have loads of torque, and I'd assume that most tesla cars are limited only by their suspension and frame, not the motor. 5000 lbs is nothing to shy at, that's on par with most medium sized trucks. Pepsi (i think, might be coke) will be testing short service radius electric semi truck and trailers for local deliveries... think restocking the walmart or grocery store and back. Electric is not good for long hauls, diesel will always be the bang for the buck.

If hes grid tie system is over 5 kw it will shutdown his offgrid inverter and it will have no way of shuting down the grid tie inverter when the batterys are charged. This applies to his current setup if he switches the off grid inverter to a Outback or an SMA setup they support AC coupling via frequency shift power control which can limit the output of the grid tie inverter

A mid-sized trailer has enough space for 3 rooftop solar panels. If you get ones like the Silfab SLGX350, 350 watt panels. That would make a 1050 watt system. Since they'll be lying flat all day on the trailer roof as you drive, at most on a clear sunny day, they'll generate 4.5 kWh from sunrise to sunset. Combined with a 5 kWh battery bank in the trailer, and the losses from the inverter to the Tesla battery when charging the car off the trailer battery, that's only 5 miles of extra towing range per day or 10 miles not towing. EVs only get half their rated range when towing moderate loads.

I'm curious...are the PV panels on your roof using the mini-inverters that are used on grid tied systems these days? I understand that they will only function IF they are picking up the Grid tie at a specific MGhz or they just become inert and won't function. So, technically, you cannot use your roof PV panels unless you lose the individual inverters attached to them, and then run them into your house loads panel through an independent inverter. Thank EVTV and Jack Rickard for that lesson LOL. Anyway, you continue to impress me with your drive to be offgrid and totally independent of the power companies. I'm still distilling my RV dream with the solar and lithium batteries (along with a 480 watt mini-split HVAC system). Gonna cost a bundle, but well worth it! Keep the videos and tutorials coming my friend!!!

Will, Can you charge an EV with direct solar so as not to burn down batteries?
@carrtb
@carrtb 3 жыл бұрын
I like this question and it makes me want to think out loud a bit: Assuming ones goes directly DC to DC, not DC to AC to DC. Does the DIYer’s DC source voltage need to mimic that of a Supercharger? I think so because the car is prepped to take the DC from the SC with the AC/DC converter in the car bypassed, then internal battery pack switching may need to take place among the series/parallel modules to accept the Tesla SC of 480DC. If a guy had a bunch of 370W, 47V (open circuit?) panels he could series 10 of them to get 470VDC (close enough or come up with another manuf combo!). This would ideally provide 3700W (3.7kW) of energy and take about 20 hrs to fully charge a 75kW battery (Model 3 Perf or Long Range). Seems outrageous but hey, add another string of 10 in parallel and you cut it down to about 10hrs! I think the above is the easy part but what may be hard is figuring out what kind of communication takes place between the car and the SC. Does the mere fact DC is at the nozzle instead of AC (at 120V or 240V) cause the car’s internal AC/DC converter to be switched out or is there some kind of handshaking (digital conversation) taking place? Each string of 10 panels in the above example provides about 8 amps ideal. For grins lets say we had 3 strings of 10 panels in parallel, we’d have 24 amps ideal. We have seen the current vary while plugged in at a SC (though at much greater quantities) given the battery temp and state of charge, so does the car itself throttle the SC output current or does this happen within the SC? If all the intelligence and control is in the car and it goes simply by what it “sees” at the nozzle then a straight solar solution seems feasible. Unfortunately I think it’s more complicated, likely certain aspects of the intelligence and of the control are split between the SC and car. There is a degree of this using our gigantor wall-warts when we charge at home!

Is there a way to charge off solar directly, high voltage DC ~440v? Just seems more efficient to avoid converting to ac only to convert to ac and then back to AC. The superchargers do this. It would require a voltage regulator of some sort.

As always, Awesome Video Will! with my setup, i installed a Nema 6-50 outlet. Only issue i have is when i check the voltage with my meter on one side and to the ground, im getting 109 volts and the other side i get 139 volts. not sure why its not 120 volts each side. did i get one of the wires crossed somewhere in the panel or inverter?

I have about 650-700 ah of liion, @29.4v at 4.2per cell. For powering my 5kw inverter, I am adding to the capacity slowly, and I have a 12v liFePo4 bank for 12v lighting, just over 100ah, with every light on , it last for about 12+hours , I'm looking for a DC to DC charger to have the ability to charge one from the other, incase of emerfency,

Will: Ran across Jack Rickard (EVTV) on KZbin. Didn't understand most of what he said, but I immediately thought of you. He was speaking about using Tesla batteries from wrecked cars for storage in residential solar systems. Do you know about him? He does a lot about grid-tied solar systems.

How many 100A12V Battle Born batteries would one need to charge a Tesla Model 3 Long Range from empty to full? .. without losses 75000 / (100*12) = 63, and with a 20% loss: 75! That would cost 75 * $899 = US$ 67425. The Tesla Model 3 Long Range costs $ 44490 Wow! Thus when vehicle to grid becomes a Tesla thing, it is much cheaper to buy a Tesla car than a garden shed full of Battle Borns. Fine battery, that is not the point, but what discount is possible when buying 75kWh of Battle Born?

DC from solar to an inverter to make it AC, then the CAR converts the AC to DC to charge the battery. Can you give the car a DC supply and it doesn't have to lose via conversion TWICE? I understand why "off grid" systems use an AC inverter, but IF you wanted to set up an off grid system that is SOLELY for charging your EV, could you bypass the inverter and use just: solar panels, battery bank and Tesla charger cable? I know enough to know that I don't know.

Will, I really like all your videos and have learned a lot from you. Could you please let us know the level of fan noise coming from the LV5048 and if it is continuous while supplying 15A 240v to the Tesla while charging? I can hear the fan noise and it sounds very loud behind you in your storage shed. Do you think it would be too loud to mount inside a garage if you were working on a project? I saw your video of the smaller 24V unit by the same mfg and the fans were much quieter. Thanks in advance.

I was just looking at those inverters on Ebay. It looks like there are a few different brands of this same inverter? They are very cheap for the features they seem to be offering, so looking forward to your video on this inverter. I wont be using solar, I build biofueled generators and will use the charge features of this inverter. This inverter coupled with another in parallel could be very power along with my system pushing it :)

That solar array looks way too small to keep your 4kWh charge rate. Are there more solar panels than what's shown? Won't your batteries die in an hour or so otherwise / or drop to 1kwH rate max charging?
