I retired a 1.5 years ago. I have a nice off grid solar to compliment the on grid. Live in the desert southwest. My entire 2300 sq ft house and 900 sq ft garage are all off grid for air conditioning/heating. Bought a 2023 Chevy Bolt EV in December of 2022. 10k miles on the Bolt now. $0.00 spent on fuel. Charging at home, off grid is like a dream come true. My wife now has a Bolt too for over a year. She said she would never go back to a ICE car again. We own a Ford Explorer for any road trips. It is simple. Buy what works for you. Our Chevy Bolts totally work for us. Your take on the EV situation was right on, well done.

I have a 2023 Bolt EUV, and I love it for the most part. It is not great for road trips, so I keep my Mazda ICE car for those. It is great for my commute to work, where I have free level 2 charging, so I pay nothing to drive back and forth to work, no oil changes. Only expense so far, is I had to buy new tires at 25,000 miles but that is my fault because I drive it very aggressively. Have also had to pay for *gasp* windshield wiper fluid. I also have solar at home, so I can charge for cheap if I need to. As far as problems, the 360 degree camera view system has failed, but was repaired under warranty. Note that is not a problem that occurred because it's an EV, any ICE or EV can have problems with any camera system built into the vehicle. Other than that, I am very happy with it. It is fun to drive, it's a great vehicle, and I plan to drive it until fails. My wish list for my next EV is longer range and faster charging so that I have the OPTION of taking road trips with more convenience, and at that point I can get rid of my Mazda which is actually still a great ICE car.

You have a LOT of money compared to the average American, especially the average YOUNGER American and the average non-white. (Again, I am saying AVERAGE here). While I don't begrudge you that luxury (I made my choices, and my choice of wife was especially terrible) it's not an achievable life for most people. On the other hand, I have no sympathy whatsoever for the people living paycheck to paycheck while driving a late-model pickup with a $1,000 monthly PAYMENT (so a $1,200 - $1,500 monthly COST).

My solar panels don't even appear as panels because they make up the roof of my carport and the roof of my rabbit shelter. I'll make two more for a large capacity potable water building and a dedicated building for batteries and charge controllers. Each of the current ones produce 48 and 12 volts. So will the others and they're all going to be linked and will allow short stretches of wiring for enough lights to make my place look like it's constantly daytime. Each roof is under 200 square foot and holds 3360 total watts of solar panels. 2960 for 48 volts and 400 for 12 volts. In Finnish and Norwegian Lapland the things are changing quickly. Gas stations are closing and every house has electricity and there are already many quick chargers. The supermarket chains and restaurants are building fast charging infra pretty quickly. Close to where I live thare are more than 200 plugs within 15 min drive.. there may still be queues is some places, because of airport customers and taxis. The trend is that often gas stations doesn't invest new pumps and other infra when they are outdated, but they invest charging stations that are cheaper. They make money by selling food etc. Profit for gas is low. Over 30% of new vehicles are BEVs and 20% PHEVs, so it already makes sense.

Battery fires are not common, hell, they are bordering on non-existant. Allmost all issues leading to them are due to faulty charging equipment and cell balancing. Not the fault of the cells themselves. If you have a bad cell and it doesn't blow it's fuse, you can also cut it's fuse wire fairly easily in those pacs. The only time I would agree with your statement are for pouch cells. More energy per cell, easier to damage, harder to thermally maintain, and shorter life expectancy anyway.

Wife and I have “solar powered” electric bikes. I put together two 100 watt solar panels and a power station to charge the bikes. We bike for groceries, going out to dinner, visiting friends and recreation. For times of bad weather or longer range needs, we have a hybrid Toyota RAV4. We are 70 yo and really enjoy the health benefits. This was an inexpensive option to buying an EV car. Our city has bike lanes, shared use paths for most of our routes. Life is good.

The people who lease a new car every 3 years are the same people who get the latest iPhone or Pixel for "free" when they sign a 3 year contract and pay $80 monthly while the rest of us just flat out buy a phone and pay $30/month for the same unlimited calls, text, data. Car manufacturers don't lease cars to lose money. They make money from your lease. They make money before you even drive a mile on the car (there's always an initial down payment), when you return the car (extra miles, a maintenance issue, a missed oil change, a ding there, a dent there...), when they sell the car, or when they sell it to back to you. Car manufacturers love leases because they can make money several times over.

Back in 2019 (after following Tesla since day one), my wife and I finally bought our Model 3 as our wedding anniversary gift. Two weeks later, I put all the money in the self directed portion of my 401(k) into Tesla stock, which I still own to this day. Needless to say, we've been thrilled with both decisions. Tesla has also released their vehicle Service Manuals to the public. They've also really loosened up on what parts they'll sell to the public. We only pay seven cents per kW/h here, so it has been pretty hard to justify doing solar. But with the world in its current state, we're finally looking at doing our own solar. If the SHTF, it'll be nice to be able to continue to put "gas" in our Teslas.

To be fair the dead EVs were the fault of the operator not route planning properly to accommodate reduced range. One would've definately ended up with damaged batteries as I was unable to tow it as it was nosed down a narrow driveway and was designed to be towed from the front only. It ended up staying where it was overnight in temperatures which damage lithium cells with completely dead batteries that were unable to heat themselves. Me attempting to winch the car (Tesla model s) backwards with no provisions and control arms buried under aerodynamic skirting posed great risk of damage so I walked away and told him to find a generator.

Example, my home loan is about 3%, so if I can make 12% in the stock market, my money is better spent there instead of paying off a house early. 2. There was no discussion on the secondary effects of fossil fuels. They cause global warming, polution increases disease and cancer rates and society ends up paying for this. So I do think there is a role in the govermnent either charging the fossil fuel industry for these extra costs, or encouraging a switch to EVs and solar power to reduce the effects of fossil fuels. I have 8kW generation; I'm located in Texas. My Co-Op pays me their wholesale rate for my excess generation. My excess generation covers my energy costs and cuts into the $30 meter fee, leaving me with a bill of a few dollars to $20. They used to give me a better deal, but after they ended that, I never saw another negative bill... My house is small and I don't try to cool it all. I run two 5000 BTU A/C daytime and one of those at night right now. When the panels shut down at dusk, I go off-grid on 15kWh of LFP batteries. With A/C , I am typically using 50% of my battery capacity, running also 2 large refrigerators, 1 mini frig, and 2 small chest freezers as my main nighttime loads. I'm retired and don't like to go anywhere much, so I could easily apply some of my excess generation to charging an EV (if I could afford one), as I do now charge a 48v E-Z-Go MPT and a cargo ebike.

I wouldn't have purchased my Ford lightning if I thought i would have to use public chargers. When i first purchased it, i was charging with the 80 amp charger that i got from sunrun, a third party that works with Ford. At the time, it was included in my price along with the 120/240 charger. Summer i pay $.12/kwh, winter $.08/kwh. That supper cheap compared to public chargers. Recently, I started to charge my truck using my solar system. I've also installed a receptical that I can connect the 240 - 7200 watt receptical in the bed of my truck to and power everything in my home. I can charge my solar batteries with it or just bypass my solar system and just power my home. I never use more than 20 kwh a day, and of course, most of that is used during the day, so solar is running my home and recharging my 23 kwh lithium battery pack. I'm 74 and a retired electrician who's worked as a radio repairman in the army, factory electrician, GE motor winder, FAA as electrical engineer so naturally I've install my entire system and still have my original solar world solar panels & 2 of my magnum 4400 watt inverter chargers. I'm getting off subject here, I simply love my F150 lightning. Being retired, i had to trade in both my 2014 F150 and my 2018 prius along with savings and a portion if the sale of my 2100 sq ft home I built. I did have to purchase a PowMr 10 kw inverter because the 7200 watt charger was pushing my 8800 watts of magnum power to its limit. So on sunny days i plug in my truck, turn on my reserve dedicated inverter and charge my truck , recharge my solar batteries and what power is left over preheats my domestic water that feeds my propane hot water heater. And as the sun sets i have a few panels facing west that top off my Ecoflow Delta pro 3600 that runs a refrigerator to lessen the load on my main system whuch normally is still at around 70% in the morning just as the sun starts hitting my east facing array that has 15 - 320 watt renogy panels. As the sun passes the tree line it hits my 2 south facing arrays that each have 18 - 240 watt solar world panels. Another 9 - 300 watt panels facing south on my roof. With 131 kwh battery in my truck when fully charged normally kept at 90%. I could run my home for 6 days easily. No need though because I have an 11kw generac in case the grid is dow and i haven't had any sun for several days. EV'S definitely aren't for everyone, but neither is solar. I'm not sure i would've been able to afford all my system if I had to pay an electrician to install it. Most important in this comment stay debt free, save up for what you want, then purchase it. I wouldn't have been able to retire in 2010 if I hadn't been debt free. Now I'll be 75 in a couple of months. Certainly not rich but I'm still totally debt free.

Great Rant Will. I have a house and a condo. They are 160 miles apart. Each of my utilities charges me just under $0.09/kWh. On the house, I have a 15,000 watt solar panel system. I generate 10mWh annually. The utility pays me $0.056/kWh as a banked credit. Michigan did away with net metering last year, (as if people were robbing the poor) and they charge me $0.086/kWh to buy it back. Both utilities charge me a monthly fee just for being a customer. I generate enough electricity to power both houses and charge my Tesla which costs less than $0.03/mile. But I'm still getting ripped off. I need to heat my panels for snow in the winter or I would need a 2-3 week battery. Then I need to install the CS EP4 battery and add units as needed. Or I need to get rid of both places and start over. You said you have had 80 cars, I've had 50 but I am 74 yrs old. That's 1 million miles. My Tesla may last 1 million miles, and It has been fixed several times.

The biggest problem is most of the raw materials are not allowed to be mined in the USA and imported from Africa or Asia, this also includes the materials for catalytic converters and DPF systems. 99%+ of ships are registered in countries with no pollution regulations and just 3 ships making a 1-way trip to the USA pumps out more pollution than every registered ICE vehicle including commercial vehicles do in an entire year and can't forget about the petroleum products to make the jugs for DPF fluid that end up polluting the environment. We still use steam on a large scale in 2024, steam was invented over 300 years ago. Before there is any EV mandate they need to mandate E power on ship, planes, and trains not to mention the 50-100yrs to upgrade and de-carbon the grid. The biggest problem with EV is travel time, I can make an 1100-mile trip in under 20hrs in my ICE vehicles for an EV it would take 3-4 days. EV drivelines require oil and some coolant, and it cost more for a tesla reman motor then it does for the 5.4 in my truck. Even if every mode of transport was electric the world would still have a huge demand for petroleum until someone invents a matter re-sequencer to make all the plastic and synthetic parts. The carbonless evolution will take a long time and needs to start at the top with generation and end with cars and trucks that can go 300-400 miles on a 10min charge. People get so wrapped up in the political propaganda and lies that cars and trucks are causing global warming and government mandates and subsidies and regulations only make things worse. For people like me they would have to trade me even up for my 20+ year old gas powered for an EV and throw in a solar system to recharge them.

I think cyber truck body panels are going to be very easy to work on. Every panel just unbolts unlike modern unibodies, any part swapper can fix them. Plus you can cut, weld, and grind without having to worry about it rusting out from behind later. Buffing a single panel to match the ones around it is probably impossible though. Mind you, you can buff the whole truck basically infinite times, unlike paint.
@carrtb
@carrtb 3 ай бұрын
I agree. At first I was disenchanted with the idea of the Cybertruck seemingly being constructed like a Chevy Avalanche, no separate cab and bed bolted to a frame. Then I watched the tear-down vid from Munro & Assc I learned otherwise. All the quarter panels are structures with stainless skins attached and can be unbolted from the frame. Yes, both front AND rear. Underneath them are the giga castings which make up the framework in front and rear of the cab structure. The battery pack is also structural and is the floor of the cab structure. The truck bed with its inner side walls (left, right, front) is basically a large single piece “scoop” which can be removed (the bed does include a counter balanced floor panel to give access to a vault under the bed). Actually a very simple build and this construct has me impressed.

Somebody drove into the rear quarter of our Model 3, so that panel section had to be cut out and a replacement panel welded in, plus color match paint job. Gets expensive real quick. Would have been much cheaper if you could just unbolt the panel and replace, as with the Cybertruck.
