Beautiful! I have several garden tractor V-twin engines around 20HP I can use for a project just like this. Watching how you did the crankshaft to outboard spine is an inspiration for me. Outboard motors are SO expensive and this is an answer. Where I am in Florida, most water is very shallow. Mud motors and airboats are the usual way to get around. This will fit right in. Thanks!!

I am at Lake Panasoffkee Florida which is about 30 miles south of Ocala and 60 miles north of Tampa right on I-75. I lived 44 years of my adult life in Jacksonville and there most of the water for boating is at least brackish if not salt. I bought a 14' 6" Critchfield boat in 1999 and the salt ate the Suzuki DF40 cylinder head. I was just finishing up on replacing the head now when I discovered an incredible deal on a new Suzuki DF50 motor from New Smyrna Beach for $4,990. which I bought. Never again will I run in salt water. Lake Panasoffkee is very shallow as is the Withlacoochie River flowing out the top of the Lake. With our recent drought most of the lake is about 4' deep. I am an old retired auto mechanic and while in Jacksonville I did a lot of mowers, weed eaters, garden tractors and power equipment on the side @@chud327

I'm going to build the same engine and lower unit setup for a pontoon. Lower unit gear ratio is 2.0:1 wondering if these 18 hp briggs would handle putting sprockets on the crank and prop shaft to speed the prop up? From what I'm seeing the briggs is only turning the prop half the speed it was originally designed for. That's at 3500 rpm the briggs is governed to. The 2 stroke was spinning 5000 rpm!

@@benkalinowski5834 ive been running my 26 briggs on a 50 yamaha for about 5 years,2000 hours.......how much more reliable do you want. And your wrong about why outboards are water cooled. Water is more efficient at cooling than just low speed airflow....and since your in water with your boat and motor.....water is the natural choice for cooling. Air cools from the outside,water cools from inside the block where the heat is being generated.

@@benkalinowski5834 im not gonna arguee with you,im not saying air cooled is better than water cooled,or water cooled is better than air cooled. Just stating facts. Stocks briggs vanguard series are factory rated for 500 hours of service.my 26 intek has over 2000 hours pushing a load at 19 mph for 5 years,some days are 8 hours running,both cylinders compression are 140 psi. And i have plenty other briggs with many more hours,all original internals and not melted down as you advertise. How many water cooled boat motors have you come across with over 2000 hours,and never been rebuilt. My whole point is....your logic is wrong. I have nothing to prove,i dont need to to answer your replies anymore.i only answered because i read your reply,and your facts arent facts,just your opinion.....but your trying to pass em off as facts. My claims are backed up. Btw.....water cooled is more efficient over aircooled,no arguement there. Funny how 90% of moderen prop driven airplanes are aircooled and.....people trust them with their lives......you wouldnt happen to be an aviation mechanic would you 🤣 Btw....heres a fun fact for ya.....your cars precious cooling water that is far superior than air......its cooled by air 😁

Didn't sound like the motor was bogging at all at full speed so I think you still got a lot of unused power just waiting to push a bigger prop. It would be cool to see how big a prop that Briggs could push before getting hot, and then maybe you could rig something that pulls a little water from the river/lake and sprays it on the engine for increased cooling!

Can this set up lay down like a normal outboard for transport or does it have to stand upright so oil doesn't leak out. Also does the leg need to pump water so it can stay cool
@chud327
@chud327 4 жыл бұрын
I have some single cylinder homemade boat motors that can lay down carb side up, but not this one. this one can lean up on the back of the boat and that put the carb up in the air, but if you lay it down, it would be an oil spill going on. You would want to drain the oil before going horizontal with it. The leg does not need water pumped to stay cool, that was just for the orig engine. Thanks for watching.
