What bothers me about all of these speed design videos is that they all create a single scene. It looks great from one camera angle and one position, but that's it. This is NOT a level. It's a screenshot.

Level "Design"
@Integroabysal7 жыл бұрын
I'ts not near a level design.1st you must make assets alone or hire a 3d artist to make them for you. 2nd you must optimize everything to look great from every angle. 3rd making a level also includes doing interactive physics , placing npcs , stylize textures fro you needs, manage quests and many micro tweaks that rely to level design. That is no more than a 3d concept art , i can't call that a level design.
@ElementalFX1157 жыл бұрын
Key word, "Design" what the level could look like if fully fleshed out, take your arrogance somewhere else.
@func_detail7 жыл бұрын
I believe this would fall under "Environment Art" or something. Level Design would be when you actually plan out a level for the player to play in.

It's beautiful but did you bake all the lights? It looks like it could use a bit more indirect lighting inside the temple or to the right of the tower with the bong hanging from it, where the darker part next to the bushes and grass is.
@Epik_Xero7 жыл бұрын
So I actually made a few mistakes with this one. I didn't use a reflection actor for starters. The lighting wasn't ideal. I rushed a lot of this and yeah the darks are just way too dark. Also scale is off in a lot of places. Not my finest work. I appreciate your constructive feedback. I'll try and improve that in the next videos.

Almost all of the art i'm using is free and available on the UE4 Marketplace. look up any content that Epic Games has released themselves. They have several projects and art content packages available for free all of which make up most of my videos.

Always mind-boggles me why people use UE4 for some artistic patchworking project which you could simply do in Photoshop (or AE/Nuke should you want a video). Because, obviously this is not a "level design scene" as it is utterly useless for a game level (other than being a background). This is simply a 2D stage, rotate the camera and the illusion is gone, thus why not make some Matte Painting in Photoshop instead? Yeah, UE4 is free, and you can do what you want, but don't clickbait by calling it "level design". It's not.
@AcinfoProduction7 жыл бұрын
Well, maybe they dont know how to use the other programs and use UE4, or they just simply prefer it. Lol, there are millions of reasons for that.
@j.seidler96397 жыл бұрын
Yes, as I said: everybody can do what they want, I don't care. Just don't call it level design, especially when it's all done by placing a couple of prefabs they don't even make. "Hey Mom, watch, I can cut out pictures from random magazines, glue them together and call it "Stage Design" '.
@AcinfoProduction7 жыл бұрын
Well, that´s how you come up with a creation actually :/ . For ex. Apple doesnt make their video cards or their disks, other companies do, and then the chinese put them all togheter. Apple just creates the idea. In this case, the guy created the idea and then designed his level...
@j.seidler96397 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean, but it's simply not a "level". It's a semi-static picture he put together with artwork of others. Again, I really don't mind people doing whatever they want, I just don't like the titles that make you think there's somebody actually "speed level designing". Speed level designing is an art of it's own (and less about visuals than game mechanics and logic).
@Epik_Xero7 жыл бұрын
So I'm going to try and give a fair and unbiased response to all of this. You're not wrong with your statements, but you're also not entirely correct either. I am a professional level designer and level artist who has been in the gaming industry for almost 7 years now, So I have some credibility here :P Level Design is a broad term and can be broken down into multiple roles and art forms. Level design consists of designing a layout, scripting, and visuals. These roles are often done by multiple people working together on a single map. I am a level designer who focuses on Level layouts and level art / visuals. You're right that this isn't real level design. I'm not making a map for any specific game where someone can run around and play in. I'm making a scene. But I am using all the skills of a level designer to do so. I'm building an environment in a 3D space just as any level designer does and I'm making something entertaining to watch. The amount of time it takes to make an actual level in a video game can take hundreds of hours to make. Obviously that is not entertaining to watch. I'm trying to simplify what a level designer does by showing how something can be made from nothing in a short amount of time. Also I'm not using prefabs. Prefabs are a group of meshes already combined together to quickly build a scene. I'm using all individual assets to make these scenes. That is exactly what any level designer does to make video games. A prop artist will make the assets and a level designer will use them to make a playable space. I hope you read this and understand what I'm saying. Art is anything you want it to be. Maybe you don't find making a scene in a level editor to be art, or maybe you do. But If I can make a video that inspires people whether be to try and learn how to do level design on their own or just learn more about the gaming industry, than that's art to me, and I believe that is art to them.

very good but terrible music choice, it makes it almost unwatchable. I suggest search for Maverick in youtube, he is also making impressive level designs like you in unreal or unity. But what makes his videos more watchable is the perfect music choice. Please consider it for future projects :) Good work.

I agree. Music that matches the environment can make the video flow smoothly to the viewer. Dubstep is rarely ever the answer for environments.

Look at Gigabyte. They have legendary laptops without the 'gamer' gimmick (as well as some with in case you want RGB everything). I use a Gigabyte P37X V3 which had one of Gigabyte's 8GB GTX980M. They have newer and more powerful models out right now as well as ones with equal power to mine for a lower price because this is coming to 3 years old now. The only place it's lacking is in RAM which can be upgraded from 16 to 32.

thanks for the reply, unfortunately it comes a day late. I already bought an Acer predator 300 on sale for 899. I will keep gigabyte in mind next time I'm in need of a laptop.
