Not only is this some of the best digital artwork I have ever seen, but you actually take the time to reply to *every comment!* Your composition is superb, the amount of attention to detail put into this piece is amazing, and your color choices are perfect! Thank you so much, and Im glad the videos are helping you somehow! And SAI is a great software, like any other. People just don't give it a chance because it is "used to draw animu" and brushes "aren't as good" as Photoshop, lol.

Well, as you can see, it is perfectly possible to paint realism / traditional looking pieces on SAI xD Tools don't really matter, they can be helpful on depending on what you are trying to achieve, but as long as you know how to get a certain result you can use pretty much anything =)

This is amazing work, i'm glad there's people like you who prove paint tool sai can be used as a proffessional painting programme :).
@CelticBotansDigitalArt6 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! There is a lot of prejudice around "simpler" art programs (like FireAlpaca and Gimp as well), because everything people see on speedpaints using them are "bad animu art" (which is very debatable on itself, I follow a lot of manga style artists and Ive learned a lot with them) and never "good realistic art". It's just lies on how well you know to use the program, I myself was never able to adapt to Photoshop due to many reasons because to me it's too heavy and laggy, over complicated in many aspects and such, so I only use it in the end to add effects, color balance and things like that. Once more, thanks a lot for commenting, and thanks for watching!

Thank you for showing us your references while you draw! I rarely use them but this gives me the feeling its ok to use them. So many times I've seen it where it just seems in the artists head and I just can't do it like that
@CelticBotansDigitalArt7 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as an artist who doesn't use references - whether it is pictures or real life subjetcs, nothing can be drawn out of nowhere, everything you draw exists somehow (even if you decide to paint an eldritch monster that isn't real and could make you insane only by looking at it, it would still be based from things we've see). Never be ashamed or hesitant of using refs, old painters used models, and today we have a vast number of pictures and artists out there to be inspired by and see how things work so we can draw them properly. :3

I absolutely love this! The way you lay down your colors before smoothing and blending actually made me somewhat understand the different colors that go in to making a specific painting. I always thought it was just a few different shades of 2 colors or so but there were greens and reds/oranges in here too. Definitely subscribing!
@CelticBotansDigitalArt7 жыл бұрын
Thank you a lot! It is WAY easier to paint like this, in my opinion - Laying the colors under the sketch in Multiply / overlay mode, merging everything and then overpainting it. Is gives a lot of freedom to change the colors while you are still deciding what to do.
@rhonahal-sabban75347 жыл бұрын
I just started digital painting so that actually really helps. I am trying to get grayscale down and get used to my tablet at the moment. It's a lot harder than it looks when you watch other artists on youtube. The whole style you have with the semi-realism in this is soooo beautiful. Do you have any tutorial videos?
@CelticBotansDigitalArt7 жыл бұрын
Watching videos and people's techiniques actually helps me a lot to this day to improve and learn different techniques and stuff from the software, even if the painitng doesn't look "great". I've learned a lot with SAI users on KZbin, observing what they do. And the only one that gets close to a tutorial is my "Inner Universe" video, but that one is really old and I don't paint like that anymore. I also have this tutorial I made 5 years ago and which doesnt reflect what I do today, but there are some tips you might find useful: apollo-devotee.tumblr.com/post/11413353066/rabbit-heart-raise-it-up-tribute-behind-the
@rhonahal-sabban75347 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! I hope you can do some small tutorials some time! Your art is super amazing, and I'm pretty sure people could learn a lot from your techniques. I follow a lot of youtube artists but I fine that I take a little here and there and I have improved but I haven't found a way to do drawings yet that really sticks. I sort of change things up here and there and experiment. I have almost a whole hard cover sketchbook full of random fails. Lol. But yeah. Thank you for responding! It's super cool to talk to other artists sometimes. No one in my family/friends really draws. They are more photographers, musicians, etc.
@CelticBotansDigitalArt7 жыл бұрын
I am thinking about that, but narrating videos is kind of hard to me. We will see how it rolls. And lol, take a look at my drawings , for example - they vary so much in style and techniques that sometimes I think people might think I have like 15 personalities in me xD And don't worry about sketches, and failing, that's what they are about actually. There's been this "glamourization" of sketches lately, specially with instagram and because some people naturally sketch in a "clean" way, everyone think they should sketch like that with no imperfections. Don't stress about that, the more you sketch and study stuff, the better you get at it and at drawing (I admit I don't nearly sketch as much as I should, sometimes I spend days withouit drawing a single line and thats kind of bad).

I like how I can see what aspect you were taking from each reference photo. You didn't take only from one source, which is a skill in and of itself. A question I have is: Do you usually know what final look you're going for when you start a painting or do you just sort of wing it? And how do you know when to stop? At any point, most people would've called it finished, what indicates a "finished" piece for you?
@CelticBotansDigitalArt7 жыл бұрын
In this painting, I already had something in mind when I got the references - I had a very clear idea of the close-up portrait of a fantasy woman character with glitering/opalescent freackles, wet hair sticking on her face, blue-ish skin tones. Also, I already knew the portrait of that beautiful Chinese model before I did the painting and I admit it was a major inspiration too :) Generally speaking, it varies a lot - somettimes like in this piece, I already have a clear goal set, sometimes I only have a general idea - for example my "Child of the Forest" painting, I knew I wanted to paint an Ori & The BLind Forest inspired character with the colors of the paintings of William Bouguereau. I just started to sketch and make the composition along the way, pretty much. Or like my Child of Light fanart, I wanted a "watercolor, soft looking" drawing, I had no elaborated ideas on how I would draw Aurora, the pose, etc. Something that is suggested by other experienced artists is to sketch little compositions and thumbnails so the ideas will flow naturally and you will end up having a lot of good ideas you can chose from the thumbnails and put in a final painting. I dont do this very often, even though I should haha. I do a "lazy" version of it that is just trying on the sketch I am working on, sometimes drawing different arms in different positions and picking the one that looks the best for example. I stop when I am satisfied with the painting. The level of details and rendering that are "enough" vary from style to style - sometimes I want it to look more rough, sometimes I want it to be more polished (which was the case of this one), it all depends on what my goal with the painting and the style are. I dont know if that answer was useful at all for you though lol, it sounds a little vague, but thats pretty much it. THank you a lot for watching and for the kind comment/ great questions! :)

Beautiful work! Very ethereal and evocative. It's a little hard to get a good spread of values in Paint Tool SAI, especially with their blending tools, but you managed to retain darks and lights.

That's the thing, actually - I only started to use blenders with this brushset I am using here, before I rarely used them exactly because the result seems so fake and "plastic"-looking. Even now I try not to rely solely on them to blend colors, I usually use the brushes themselves for that, blending but leaving some texture behind.

Well, you're doing a great job of avoiding the overly "blended" look. Your technique really makes your pieces stand out among other SAI work. BTW: Have you tried Clip Studio Paint? It has a lot of brushes that produce similar effects to SAI. ("Smooth Watercolor" is an example.) But it also has some editing tools which make the app Photoshop-lite. ;)
