Speed Painting a horse in oil & acrylic paint - Time Lapse Demo by Lachri

In this time lapse painting demonstration, I walk you through the steps I used in painting a horse in oil over acrylic paint on a Fredrix blue label ultra smooth canvas. I used liquitex basics for my acrylic underpainting, and Winsor & Newton for the oil paint. My oil mixing medium is Liquin.

Yay! So nice to see another horse painting on your channel! I still say you should try the idea i had a while back :) A heard of horses in a kind of window with some of that wood texture you paint and some of those glass orbs with your stuff in them :) I painting some orbs the other day using my ornaments as inspiration i have a bunch with sand and seashells in them to look like another world what have you :D i should post pictures to you! they are truly my inspiration and i have them hanging in my corner where i paint all the time now! I purchased them from a booth at a show not to long ago they are very unique! and for $4 not a bad price :) i wanted to buy them all because each one was unique!

Jo Matta You can by doing a lot of glazing. Really its all about keeping your lines soft. Because acrylic dries so slowly that makes it difficult. If you paint fast (wet into wet for your first layer), and do a lot of glazes over that you should get something pretty close :)

I couldn't agree with you more about the rushed areas taking away from the entire piece. I saw it very often in the fine arts class I was taking, students would spend all of their time on the face of their portraits, and then leave the hair ... flat and stringy and much softer in comparison to the detail of the face. Same thing with the clothes, the fabric would have no texture and it looked so weird putting all that focus on the face. I'm glad to see this was not an unfounded observation.

I'm doing a commissioned horse portrait and I haven't painted a horse in a very long time! Now I know why! It takes forever and they have so many muscles and the layers are endless. I'm pooped! lol

Love your work. I wished it was a little slower. My eyes are old. I've painted in oils years ago and still have the paint. Now I paint in acrylics. I love the look of oils though. I think I will give your method a try for the finishing touches. I do have a question about the zinc white. You said it was transparent. Is it the same in both acrylic and oil? Titanium white makes everything look so chalky. Does this change with zinc white?

Debbie Barnett For acrylics go with a transparent mixing white. Liquitex makes a heavy bodied one that I use all the time. As for slower videos, patreon may be a good option for you. There I upload my usual 5-7 min long videos that are slowed down to an hour or longer. There are no voice overs on those, just the slowed down video :)

susan morgan I don't remember. I mix several colors for everything. I likely used a mixture of burnt umber with black and bits of unbleached titanium white. Not positive though.

how long did the layers take to dry? and what products do that. i want to start working in oil (ive been using acrylic but there are some limitations with drying time) but it seems everything takes forever to dry.

I use Liquin as my mixing medium so they dry overnight usually :)

Ok I have a question I have been wanting to ask for awhile now but I finally see where I can ask because of this painting. My question is how can I used white without making my painting look so chalky since I don't want it that way and I can cover it but then its not how I need it color wise. I love this painting and just got I drawing in my head for a Christmas version with a horse and a lighted Christmas tree. You always seem to give me ideas. Thank you so much and Happy Thanksgiving. I'm also following you on Patreon and was thinking had sad that it doesn't have the talking like you do on the speed videos since I think it would help those who need the specific instructions so they understand how you make such wonderful painting and drawings.

Chalky? Are you dry brushing? If so, try painting wet on wet instead. If not, what type of white are you using? Titanium white is great for its strong pigment, but should be avoided when the idea is to mix with another color. In that case you would want to use Zinc White. It isn't nearly as opaque and mixes/glazes nicely as seen in this wonderful demonstration. Hope that helps.

Sam dwyer Give the zinc white (or transparent mixing white in acrylic) a try, that may help you out. For the patreon, it would just take WAY too much time for me to talk over those videos too. Just to give you an idea, this one, at only around 6 min long took me nearly two hours to record. Plus, I actually would run out of things to say. On this one I was struggling to fill the whole 6 min with audio haha.

Lachri Fine Art Hey Lisa I have the zinc white so I will try it because I kept going for the Titanium white instead. Also I know you can't go through the patreon video like you do here but I'm always seeing comments asking about what your using through each step and I know that's almost impossible to say but it was wishful thinking because you really are that good and everyone can't wait to see what you do next and I know you really want to help everyone learn because you have to have the biggest heart to do all the editing and all you do so your like a youtube teacher for a lot of us on here. Since you can't possibly talk in the whole video on there that sums up the video here so they need to watch it here then go on there and watch because if they keep in mind what was said here they can see what your doing there. But I do have zinc white I will try instead but everyone kept saying I shouldn't use it. Not sure why so I just kept it away of my colors. Daniel Morales It's called a mop brush. Lisa prefers using a makeup brush, though, because it doesn't shed hairs as much.

Hello Lisa ! i have a question for you. A few weeks ago i got into a pretty intense conversation with people (followers, artists etc) about the primary colors in paint. Some said that red, blue and yellow were the primary colors. I said that was wrong, that the real primary colors were magenta, cyan and yellow and that artists shouldn't spread wrong informations such as "red paint is a primary color" Then someone said magenta was just a fancy name for purple, another person said that you didn't need magenta to paint, someone else say you can create magenta by mixing others paints.... I disagree with all this, but since you are a painter, do you consider magenta as a primary and red as a secondary color ? or are they both primary paint color for you ?

I consider red, blue and yellow as primary because they can't be mixed from anything else. With those three colors, in theory you can mix anything else. In practice I buy tons of different colors to mix with because those three alone would limit your palette. I can mix magenta with red and blue. I'm not necessarily the person to ask though because I have a very unpopular view when it comes to art theory. I think people spend too much time focusing on things that don't matter, and not enough time actually painting :P If you want to call magenta a primary color, go for it, if someone else wants to say its a secondary color, it makes no difference to me...as long as their work is good :)

If I'm not mistaken, Sakuems, there are two different versions of the colour wheel. The more traditional places red/blue/yellow as the primary colours, and the other (that is similar to what printers use and I can't remember the name of) uses magenta/turquoise/yellow. I agree with you in that I find it easier to get a range of tones with those three as primary colours opposed to red/blue/yellow, which I would need both warm and cool versions of to achieve a range of colours without muddying other colours. However, it's much easier to start with a wide range of colours to begin with so you don't have to mix all the time to achieve secondary colours.

Magenta, Cyan and Yellow are the primary colours for printing this is why for digital artists use them as 'primaries' depending on your settings. Traditional art Red, Blue, and Yellow are the primaries because you can't make them.

Lachri Fine Art i suppose ur right .. but in my graphic design high school, during 4 years, we used magenta/cyan/yellow as primary colors. I even bought a primary set of paints from System 3 paints ... which didn't have blue or red in it. and i found that it was easier for me to create red by mixing yellow and magenta. Because ... yes, you actually CAN create red by mixing equal parts on magenta and yellow. It's not as deep as an actual red paint, but still :D if you have blue and red, you can't have a deep pink can you ? it looks purple to me.... but i guess as you said, the only thing that matter is not the colors, it's just how you paint :) i'm like you in the end, i have so many colors that i don't really bother naming them primary or secondary. You can have so many reds and blues and pinks. I was just like .. "if you make a video about color theory, can you at least explain both options, like, include magenta, cyan, blue, red, yellow, green" cause it will be easier for beginners. i think. But thanks for sharing your opinion about that :)

Samantha Walker Yes, that's why i found it a bit strange to use the red as a primary, a cold or warm red, looks muddy when u try to create a purple. it's not as vibrant as what you could get with a magenta. I think it's important to have both primaries combos, to have more control on the tone you want to have.

theres special paper you can get called tracing paper that allows you transfer your drawings, look it up, ive used it multiple times and it works well!

Primary colors are colors you can't make red blue yellow . secondary colors are a mix of two primary colors Tershery are a mix of secondary colors and then you have tones of different colors

I've never used Oils... I wasn't even taught anything about them at college studying fine art so they intimidate me wasn't taught anything about acrylics either and taught myself but they're not as scary to me XD I'd like to use oils one day but I have no idea how they work XD

Marie Thomas If you can take a few classes in oil painting, just to learn how to mix your mixing medium (liquin in my case) and to learn when to let each layer dry, oils are actually easier IMO than acrylics. Its just learning when and how much mixing medium to use and when to stop for the day so that you don't end up with muddy colors :)
