I've just completed the job based on these directions. I rented the 5 ton puller and the 38 mm deep socket (OEMTOOLS 1/2in Drive 6 Point Axle / Spindle Nut Socket Set) from Autozone. In addition to pulling the hub, I also used the puller to remove the bearing from the transmission shaft (after soaking it with Liquid Wrench penetrant). While you're at it, do yourself a favor and inspect / replace the agitate and spin belt as well as the tensioner pulley.

I just had two of these this week... both took forever to get the hub nut (had to use a torch) and the hub would not come off... I finally got one off, but the other one wouldn't budge without doing serious damage to the tub. Plus, I twisted off 3 hub bolt heads. I gave up on that one... Honestly, had I kept going, I would've been charging the customer so much, it would be less expensive to just replace it. Like you said, the guys who do the videos where everything pops off easily, aren't working on a 20 year old machine that's been used 24/7/365. It took me 5 hours to do the other one, and that one was nearly as bad. Yours actually look so clean compared to mine, I was a little jealous. Mine were in a dorm building for 20+ years, neglected, infested and rusted. Next time I get one of these, I'm telling them to replace it. Anyway, great video... I just came to see if anyone else had as much trouble as I did... yep.

I wonder if someone didn't apply Loctite to the bolts, and hub shaft when they did the tub seal before. Loctite keeps water out of the threads you will see where bolts that have none will be rusted in high humid environment. I worked in the marine industry for awhile we saw that lot where someone put a bolt in with nothing go to remove it just breaks the head off. Everyone kept a bottle in their pocket put it on everything we used green or blue. Red only on big bolts that needed to hold lot.

Over 1/2 the SQ washers I rebuilt where scrapped due to a hub that would not come off. The puller just cracked outer hub, penetrant no luck, heat cant be used since it would damage transmission seals. Chisels, grinders, drilling holes in hub center, nothing works, to bad some of these washers less than 5 yrs old.

Great video! This really helped me out!!! The 3M glue is crazy expensive! Good idea using the gear puller to pull the hub. That worked for me. But I should’ve used a block or steel to prevent drive rod threads from getting fouled when I was pulling the hub. When I started putting drive bell bolt back in I realized threads were fouled and had to tap them.

unfortunately it was not as successful as your washer repair. I got everything off but the hub but the hub and bearings were so rusted and corroded that just removing them cause the center hole of the outer tub to break off. I had to order a new outer tub to complete the job. that was almost a month ago and still waiting for the tub to be mailed. That seems to be the most difficult part of this job. Alex. You are a good man. Thank-you for this!! My 5 year old Speed Queen had a slight "squeaking" sound over past month that was getting progressively louder. Because of your video I was able to determine squeak coming from the rubber "cap" that sits just under the bell at 25:00 point in your video. Hopefully anybody that has a squeaking sound during agitation only finds your video, removes the bell and rubber cap, clean and replace the cap or buy a new one. In my case it worked well, there was some type of heavy black grease build up in upper portion of cap that must have been applied when built new at factory. I did not apply any lube to the rubber cap, because I see you did not apply any lube as well. thanks.

So if the grease in the splines of the agitator bell are washed out, then plastic shaft spline seal fails, the water just slides down the inside of the rubber seals down the shaft, down over the top bearing and through it, then down to the lower bearing, and then out onto the transmission. The only thing stopping water from moving under the water agitator bell is the small amount of grease you added to the splines of the agitator bell. The plastic spline seal that fits around the threads of the shaft for the hex nut seal, and the hub sitting on the rubber seal are both not using any sealant to fill small spaces water can travel into. Which is how water was able to get down into the shaft. In reassembly pack the hub under the top bearing with a hard to wash away waterproof grease that does not degrade plastic or rubber. Use the grease around the base of the plastic spline seal as well to keep water from moving past and starting the rust seen around the threads. Before installing the agitator bell, also apply grease between agitator bell and top bearing to shaft and seal to keep water from sliding by. The areas in the hub left ungreased leave plenty of room for water to move by. If one chooses, use a bead of waterpump rtv at the top of the nut then push it into the nut and threads with finger before installing agitator bell. As it will move out to of the way with a pick the next time you want to remove the hex nut, but will create a seal and disallow water from moving between the hex-nut and shaft.

A 1.5in or 38mm deep socket and impact wrench should get the nut off easily when the hand tools don't budge it. It takes an especially deep socket to reach over the top of the transmission spline shaft to reach the nut. The only socket deep enough that I could find was a Sunex 248ZD, which is 12point 1.5in 2.2in-depth, cost me $25; all the other brands of deep socket were not deep enough. The hex nut is actually 38mm, so that size socket will fit better, but the 1.5in socket is easier to find and fits OK. The impact wrench will also spare the transmission bearings, which you shouldn't be hammering on with side blows on a pipe wrench or the special tool! You're liable to have the transmission fail after going through all this other bearing and seal replacement if you have hammered the nut too hard at the start.

Hello Barton, If you go to 14:10 you can see all the rust on the bearings and the transmission shaft. With 8 -10 years of service of commercial use. That little moisture and overwork through the years the bearrings t are tired and worn. I think the moisture comes trough the transmission shaft when the plastic fingers dont seal well anymore.. In minute 7:25 when I removed the tub. It shows that it wasn't that stuck, but I really it was super stuck and it took lots of force to remove it. . I have to edit the video. Other wise it would be 2 -3 hours long. But yes. Most of the time are a pain to remove them.

I’ve got the coin drop model with computer control. About 8 years old. When I start the cycle, hot and warm water buttons work but not cold. Ideas? I did swap with a known working valve so I’m baffled.

By looking at the pictures of 646P3, I am not sure if it has the exact same parts. I don't think it is for this washer.

Hello Top gun, It works perfect for the style speed queen washer I show in the video. Maybe yours is different. thanks

How long does it roughly take to do it all?
@alexthehandyman3494 Жыл бұрын
If you never done it before, it might take 4-6 hours. It is a long process, specially if you dont have the right tools.

You are amazing! Thank you for sharing this video. I just bought a used set (washer and dyer) both push coin operated. It's hard to find great videos like yours showing me how to fix my washer and dryer in the future! out of curiosity, do you have a video on how to change the timer on a dryer? My dryer model is a SDG109WF; it uses a plastic circle thing. lol...trying to find a video on how replace it so the dryer can go from 20 minutes to 40 minutes; any help would be much appreciated. Or can you direct me to website that has useful diagrams or service manuals? thank you,

Good eye mate. It seems like is cracked but is not. It is dirt and grime that looks like a crack. Of course if cracked it should be replaced. Thank so much for your comment.

Hello Alex! I have a speed queen washer similar to the one in your video that just experienced bearing failure. What was the part number for the kit you purchased?
@alexthehandyman3494 Жыл бұрын
Hola the kit I used was 766P3A. You also can use the 746 P3. that includes the sealant. The sealant is 3m560

Hello Daniel The part number I used was the 766P3A but I had to buy the 3M sealant separate. The Kit 646P3 INCLUDES THE SEALANT.

Use rubber glove when touching that sealant. It makes clean up so much easer

Just so you know: @16:00 that pin you call a stud, is the holder for the seal not to SPIN ... if the pin is missing you must replace it...or when you start the machine the seal will spin and leak bad...

Looks like you dont like to use WD-40and like to use the brutal force on the hammer and pulling bearings
@shawnaspooner50942 жыл бұрын
Hey I just have to say that even after several applications of WD-40 and PB blaster, our hub was still really hard to get off. It actually broke before we could get it off in one piece. I know that he does mention pb blaster at the beginning of his video as one of the tools that you might need for this job. Just an observation.

Just watched the video again. Shouldn't you be changing the lower bearing along with the upper bearing? Makes no sense to only change one bearing and leave the old lower in there. Also at 26:30 you should have cleaned that white plastic, it looks filthy.
@alexthehandyman34942 жыл бұрын
Hello Wadley, Yes it totally makes sense to do the lower bearing. Thanks for noticing that. This video was intended for the upper one. About the white plastic if you look at 26:52. It is cleaned. I did not mention it but, I cleaned it. Thank you so much

Just as bad as an old maytag/frigidaire or a cabrio/oasis/bravos, once they fail you throw those away and get an old timer switch whirlpool

And I'm doing the exact same thing and i hate doing bearing repairs on washing machines and it sucks and i absolutely hate doing it but i rather do it instead of wasting 800 hundred dollars for a piece of crap high efficiency washer that's going to cause me a lot of problems so and i don't have time for Nonsense
@alexthehandyman3494 Жыл бұрын
It sucks!!! I don't like to do it. Sooo time consuming. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.
@caseyoliver165 Жыл бұрын
It sucks and it took me a week to work on that because of my lack of my experience and it lasted only three months and then for some reason it seems like the washer has a hard time spinning and I spin the basket to see what was going on and it seems like it's a little tight and it doesn't want to coast on its own like it should but I don't know what is causing that problem because the motor is kinda struggling while spinning the drum and does the bearing supposed to get tight like that when they are going bad I'm not sure so what is your opinion on that and if I have do another bearing replacement on the washer again I think I might just go out and buy a new one before I go through the trouble with this again because that was Hell on earth to that just to let you know.
