ETT Season 4, episode 7: Get ready for some HOT snowboard action in this month's Every Third Thursday! Dave Lee and the Signal Snowboards crew get back to the base-ics, experimenting with new technology to actually heat up the base of a snowboard and test out their theory that a hot base will go faster. Dave explains that the snow sliding action actually works from friction heating up the snow and forming a thin layer of water that the board slides on, but what if we speed up that process by incorporating a heat film into the base? Watch as Dave dials the base all the way up to 128-degrees and snowboarder Alex Cato heats up the slopes of Park City Resort.

you should lend this board to some people who will do some actual tests on it. Like flatboard time/speed tests. Statistical documentation rather than subjective opinion (not that opinions weren't nice to hear, but it didn't sound overly convincing)

be careful where you keep those lipo batteries because if they get to low they will blow up and catch on fire. when they are used in rc cars there is something called lipo cut off which cuts it off when they get low to prevent it from blowing up.

Solid, measurable tests and observations there fellas! Very scientific and worthwhile! "I think it feels faster guys" How about (oh, 30 seconds of thought gives me...): measure a 100 foot section of hill, any moderate grade. with 50lb weight, measure the time it takes the board to reach the end from gravity alone. try and RECORD several times. average results. defeat communism.

You need numbers to prove any experiment. Feels faster is not science. Is not repeatable. Ever heard of a placebo? You should have just went down the regular mountain and clocked runs on a gps app on any smartphone. After a few runs then you can take the mean of say 10 runs without battery then 10 runs with battery. Then you would have hard numbers and not feels faster. Take care.

+Yoshi And where does the heat go when it disperses? The heated film heats in a downward direction, heating the wood below it, heating the snow below that. The transfer of heat isn't as slow as you think. There's easily enough time to heat up a significant layer of snow that will cause a noticeable change in speed.

Since you have already a powered board, I would be cool if you were able to make a pair of boots or shoes and bindings that could be magnetized together with electro magnets. This would allow allow a rider to get on, off lifts, and get going down hill quicker, rather than re-attaching the loose binding before heading down hill. Foot wear would to need have some sort of a jigsaw puzzle structure that would fit into a structured jigsaw puzzle binding. The fitting would help keep the rider from slipping off the board.

You are sliding on a thin layer of melted snow, but your speed comes from how quick you can tread the water out from under your board, not just having more water under your board. That's why there are different types of structure you can put on your board. There is a specific structure that acts like tread on your tires that gets the water away from your board quicker.

Alright now here is how we can make this great idea even better. Place a hidden battery in a jacket. Run some wires down to the boots, and have some kind of connector at the bottom of each boot. the female connector on the bottom of the boot snaps into a male connector attached to the snowboard and bindings Nobody would be able to tell that the board had been altered, and nobody would be able to see any wires or a battery. then we give these to all of the USA olympic athletes and watch them smoke the competition! ;D

I think you guys should have disconnected the battery and told the guy riding it that that it was connected. I think him knowing it was connected caused a placebo effect (him having the expectation for it to go faster made him think that it was actually going faster.) Also you could have done a down hill test and used a speed gun or a stopwatch to be more accurate but nevertheless this was a great video and I love what you guys do and maybe we'll see technology similar to this in future snowboards. :p

When the conclusion is: "It kind of feels faster" it might as well be due to the placebo effect. You built the board and of course you want it to be faster, so it feels that way. You should test it properly. Go down the exact same straight slope 10 times without heat. A long slope, for better accuracy. Then 10 times with heat. And time it with a stopwatch. That way the "feeling" of it going faster has no say at all.

Or try a blind test with dead battery's so the rider doesn't know if hes on a heated board or not and see if they can accurately determine whether their board was heated or not based on the ride alone to any significant consistency. Cool idea though, it may very well work.

Two points. First, don't say "it's just a theory" when you mean "it's just a theoretical hypothesis" or "we are just guessing based on a theory". There's a difference. Second, the heated board may go faster if all its heat energy isn't conducted to the snow, which happens nearly instantaneously when you step on it. If you would want to have a heated board while its moving, it should be able produce heat energy as fast it loses it, and this wasn't the case. The board was as cold as the snow when you were sliding on it. You could have realize this if you would have ended your project with a scientific test where you compare the speed of the board with and without the heating instead of just guessing that it goes faster when you knew that it uses both batteries and thus you "should" notice a difference. My hypothesis is that the only parameter that the heating affects is the static friction coefficient, which is not important when you are moving. So all in all, the project succeeded in doing a heated board but failed at making any difference what so ever on its speed. You could have guessed this knowing some basic high school physics.

You should had done a test on a short controlled slope running the board with and without the heat same slope same snow. A start/finish line from point A to point B and see the time difference down the slope at different bottom temps. You should patent this idea before the big guys do.

By the way, the theory that ice skating is facilitated by the ice reaching pressure melting point is one that has been debunked and is just a myth. If the weight of a person through ice skates is not enough to increase the pressure to reach pressure melting point, then the weight of a person on a snowboard or skis definitely is not.

I guess that the extra weight of the battery in his pocket made him faster(less drag vs downhill weight) than the effekt of the warm base

Out of all their board ideas, this one seems the most sellable at a commercial level. I know I'd buy something like this altho you couldn't use this on a super pow day 'cause you might avi out.

An easy formal test is the same skier does the same run over and over without jumps or rails. If there is a difference in speed then it should show up in the run times. Also, if it melts much snow, won't it create more patches of ice?

This doesn't really make any sense because if you bring your board inside and let it warm up, then take it out on the snow, it sticks until it cools down again, because it melts the snow under it. I also don't think you're actually riding on a thin layer of water. That is the case for ice skating because the blades make way more pressure on the already hard ice, but with a snowboard your weight is spread out and the snow is usually at least a bit soft. There's nowhere near the pressure needed to melt it, plus if your board melted the snow a little bit, it would leave a crusty ice trail behind. Also, what about riding in powder? It definitely doesn't melt powder, and if you've ever ridden on a day where its above freezing and the snow is melting, you know it's super slow and boggy. I you were already riding on a thin layer of water anyways, shouldnt wet snow make you go faster? This is a cool idea and cool build, but I think just a nice hot wax is just as good.

How about trying PTFE (teflon) for a base instead of UHMWPE? I dunno maybe something new to try.

I thought while snowboarding, that your floating on air molecules withing the snow and so that is why you go glide and go faster. Example, fresh powder is better than compacted snow/ice. There is more air compartments in fresh powder to glide over, but when the ice is compacted there are less molecules in the snow to ride over. By melting the ice you are just making your ride similar to going down a slide(why you may feel that your are going down faster), which would make your control less accurate. If I am wrong please correct me, this is just what i have been told about the mechanics of skiing and snowboarding.

You realize you go slower through powder right? It's about friction and resistance, I've can be faster if it's smooth and not bumpy, but if there is a thin layer of water you would slide over it much faster, it's the same as a car when it hydroplanes.

You would need a MUCH more efficient PID output to counteract the new snow constantly barraging the heated slide.

The heat of the board would have little affect on the snow melt; Im pretty sure it depends more on the force of the board hitting the snow, compressing a tiny amount of it, turning it into water.

Would a board slide better on ice, water or steam? What about all 3? You can build a hoover board using the steam from the heat.

I had the same idea. Heat your snow board using capacitors. Then you hover. This is the new edge. Please. You need a team of people to build it. Then an other to sell it. Then an other to market it. And record and patten your invention. Ask electroboom for help and fun.

the reason ice is so slippery is actually still not known the idea that pressure is what causes the ice to melt is a good idea but the mass to melt the snow just dose not add up the more common theory these days is that the ice crystals often leave out a few water molecules that have nothing to bond with. just saying
