I bought an orico thunderbolt nvme enclosuer and added a samsung 980pro 2tb nvme and get really fast speeds. What confusing is products mention thunderbolt but are only usb c devices. Usually thunderbolt devices are far more expensive.

yes, thunderbolt drives are VERY expensive.. so I was surprised when I have found Acasis enclosure for just $100 that would fit Crucial 4TB

Intel made thunderbolt 3 royalty free from May 2017, hence the lower prices. But yeah not many vendors manufacture thunderbolt enclosures or peripherals.

Luckily on my Mac Studio besides the four Thunderbolt ports there are two 10gbps USB-C ports in the front that do get around 1000MB/s with USB-C 3.1 gen 2 drives ☺️

I don’t think it is this simple. I have a WD Black 2TB drive with a fresh install of Monterey. It is inside an Acasis enclosure (Thunderbolt 4) and is connected with a Thunderbolt 4 cable. When I start up my iMac 2019 from the external nvme enclosure I get the same high speeds, but within a couple of minutes the speed drops down to that more akin to traditional SSD sata speeds (~600). I’ve tried known good cables and swapping ports. On my M1 Mac mini it performs flawlessly. On my iMac, not so good (as above).

Let's remember that Intel Macs were never smooth for video and that Intel overheats very quick which might be the issue. As I have tested this SSD on multiple Apple Chip macs from Macbook Air to Macbook Pro and Mini all working perfect especially in Final Cut Pro everything is running so smooth editing Sony A7iii and DJI footage for hours.

GREAT! Information 😆 I was getting ready to loose my MIND! Over buying all these different brands of Thunderbolt cables. Even Apple Thunderbolt 4 and still wasn't getting anything more than 600 MB's 🤯 on the Samsung T7 Shield

I got the USB enclosure with a sabrent 4tb yesterday. The speed is indeed insane. Do you still use it and what is your experience so far? My only concern is that it's gets hot a little and I'm hoping that it hasn't been an issue for you with editing.

It does not matter what SSD you will put, max speed will be 2500 mbps.

Great information and presentation! On your advice I just ordered this unit, but I got the new Pro unit with the cooling fan and a Crucial 4TB drive. Question: I have a new Mac Studio M2 Max. I see now that my OWC 4 bay enclosure with TB2 connection and SATA drives will not play nice with the Mac Studio. Since I do not need exceptionally high speed with these drives can you recommend an enclosure that would make better use of these 4 drives with the Mac M2 Studio?

I have 3 of the OWC 4M2 enclosures with one utilizing 4 of the Samsung SSD 990 PRO 4 TB, another enclosure with 4 of the Samsung SSD 980 PRO 2 TB, and a final one utilizing 4 of the Crucial SSD P3 PLUS 4 TB. I use the first two with my M1 Mac Ultra Studio and the second with my portable video editing system utilizing an M1 Mac mini. All three are a joy and are just under 2800 r/w. I did not use Softraid, but instead created my RAID level zero hard drives with Apple Disc Utility. It was a slam dunk going this route instead of the cryptic Softraid. It works perfectly and it is SO easy to create these with this Apple software. I'd wonder if any problems you are experiencing are due to the Softraid? I also have 2 of the Acasis enclosures using a Samsung 990 PRO 2 TB and a Samsung 980n PRO 2 TB and they get 2800 r/w and are a joy. Both kinds of enclosures are a joy on my Macs and highly recommended!

I have a 2019 iMac, 3GHz 6-core Intel i5 with Radeon Pro 570x 4GB and memory of 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, I want to edit 4k videos and stuff, will this setup work on my iMac ? as currently I facing lot's of issues with the performance and speed

Intel Macs are just bad. SSD will not help much. First upgrade to at least M1 Pro chip and then it will fly for video editing with an external SSD.

TY for including some legit r/w tests here. it's the biggest red flag when you're watching a review and they discuss/show everything *but blackmagic/AJA etc tests - usually an indication the creator is wrapped up in some bs brand deal or paid sponsorship, and have learned the hard way not to trust those channels who are just trying to soak up your money. thanks again for being relevant & useful here

I have bought those SSDs myself, so there is no incentive for me to show them better or worse. I just got the enclosure from Acasis. And it has solved all my problems I had with all other external SSDs on my Mac.

@utub.watcher if you worry so much about overheating there is an Acasis model with a fan. Though I did not have any issues with my crucial but I know Samsung and similar heat more. Again, there is no point in buying those as you will not get more than 2500MB/s speed with the enclosure anyway.
