The JHS Powerbar extension, (along with many many MANY other useful functions) Has a proxify components by SD Mitch - CAD Father extension in it which will do that all your proxying with a toggle function. Very useful

Thanks for sharing. I've just discovered "right-click/reload" by accident, and it seems to be a quicker way of using/replacing proxy components. For example, just "right-click/save as" your preferred component to file (the high poly component), and then "right-click/reload" just one copy of your outgoing low-poly component from that file and all copies are replaced simultaneously. To make it easier to find that component file, always place them in the same common place , in my case the "documents" folder. (set preferences/files/components to your "documents" folder)

Justin, If I ever get to the point of making SketchUp models that are complex enough to slow down I am sure this will help hugely. For now, it is simply useful information to have filed away. As always, extremely well presented and easy to follow. I know how hard it is to 'dumb-down" an explanation to its essentials when for you it is all second nature. When I am trying to teach a woodworking process to someone who hasn't yet become facile with the tools I imagine doing it myself but left handed. Humbling. Thanks again.

Thanks John - I appreciate the kind words :) - It's tricky on KZbin because I have to slow it down enough that new users can follow along, but keep it fast enough that power users still find it interesting. Hopefully I'm able to strike a good balance. Thanks again!

it is just that skill that I am complimenting you on, Breaking the matter at hand down to essentials and clearly communicating the steps of the process without getting flustered and having to repeat or revise. Good on you. I will likely never get to the point of needing some of your information, but I will keep going back to the basics until it becomes second nature. I still find many of the basic steps confusing and keep painting myself into corners,

@Thesketchupessentials6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the question. Once the proxy file is loaded in your model, you just edit it like any other component. If you want to save your changes to that component, just right click and do a save as. Reloading components works the same way no matter what

In order to get the scaling correct you often have to scale the low-poly component before it's place in the model so it's the same size of the tree you're replacing.
@Thesketchupessentials6 жыл бұрын
If you want the proxy to be exactly the same size as the component you're replacing, you can do that. If you just want it to be close, you can scale it after swapping them out - they're components, so they'll all adjust either way. Thanks!

I think in this case comparing with the workflow it is easier just take these high poly instances in another layer, and just hide it. The real problem occurs when you making some interior with all that decorative highpoly shit, there should be some simple workaround that can visualy simplify the model. Vray has it, but it should be standalone plugin and be workable with different render software
@lilstarfishdude6 жыл бұрын
Nice! Is it possible to have the hi-poly trees on one layer and the low-poly trees on another layer for quickly switching between them as needed? Or will hidden layers still affect the performance?
@Rhen56566 жыл бұрын
You can put both the low poly component inside the high poly one, and once you layer them it will definitely save performance, however not as much as the method in the video.
@Thesketchupessentials6 жыл бұрын
I would say that would work as well if you wanted to do that - there'd just be the extra step of having to copy over or create the second set of geometry. Thanks!

Hi Justin, Firstly thank you for the time and effort you put into providing this essential information for us, which otherwise is difficult to ferret out. I do have a question for you. Often when I import AutoCad drawings into my SketchUp models, although they look OK in top view, actually a lot of the lines are in a lower plane than the main part of the drawings. Do you have a method or work-around to allow me to flatten the dwg file so it is all in the one plane? Best regards, Graham Young Sydney
@wayneseymour16 жыл бұрын
Hi Justin, Is there a plugin that will lower the poly count on a component or group but maintain the necessary details that you have created? I know that sometimes during your modeling of something you may unknowing create unnecessary polygons, like if you create a window or fence component, within the interior of the model surfaces or polygons are created while the outer faces look fine the interior have unneeded or unnecessary geometry. I use clean but it still leaves unneeded geometry I'm not aware of.

You may want to try the extension CleanUp by Thom Thom - extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/cleanup%C2%B3 - I think I covered it a bit in this video - kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqXadod4r56dgKs - This will help get rid of unnecessary geometry, but whenever possible, try to consider geometry count before you create it - that's going to be the best way. Thanks!

So sketchup doesn't have built in proxy tool to show as box from external file.
@urbanwoodworking2336 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. I think the use of proxies will be very important for serious modellers. Unfortunately it appears that you have avoided the problem of component axes when swopping proxies. It is seldom a problem with trees, but can be a problem when rotation and size are important such as for handed components. Can you do another proxy video with chairs, for example?
@Thesketchupessentials6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand the problem that I "avoided." Can you be more specific as to the issue?
@jeffharmed16166 жыл бұрын
I have been using proxy swops for only a few days with objects other than trees and I discovered that proxies are replaced (reloaded) by objects (reloads) according to their internal axes orientation. Any differences will effect the replacement or reloading orientation. For example, when I change "pulls" on drawers I must make sure that.... ...the proxy pull and its replacement "pull" both have the same internal axes orientation... ...otherwise the replacement "pull" is cockeyed on the drawer. Ditto chairs in dining settings, cars on roadways etc etc.

Hi Justin, in order to speed up my modeling work within sketchup, this proxy method would be a good solution for me, but I usually render my modeling in Lumion rather than vray, so in my case what is your recommendation for me between using proxy component or vray proxy method although I dont use vray? thanks
@Thesketchupessentials6 жыл бұрын
I don't really understand the question - I'm not sure you can use Vray proxies if you don't use Vray. That said, proxies aren't really going to work the same way in Lumion - it brings in and renders objects in a different way than other rendering programs...
@dave77yeo6 жыл бұрын
TheSketchUpEssentials thanks for the response... what i mean actually is asking about your opinion or advice which is the best way to speed up skecthup modeling between using proxy component method or vray proxy (vrmesh & vrmat), I usually add some decoration and furnitures from 3dwarehouse into my interior model, but there are a lot of high poly faces / edges and it’s usually slower down my pc and lag during doing my interior modeling.

ok bro but i have one doubt ...the last rendering image was come with realistic or what???? because the trees are in 2d that's why i am asking

I don't understand what you're getting at - if you only have 569 edges/faces, that's not a large model. Are you sure your graphics card is up to date? Because at that size, I'm not sure I agree that there's no issue with laptop configuration...
