The SG5 has become my favourite trail shoe. Great grip and super cushy. Now that it is winter I have put some 1/4" hex head sheet metal screws in the forefoot of the outsole and makes it super stable on the iciest roads. Good review. 🇨🇦

Agree with your classification of this shoe. I am using it for runnable trails and road to trail runs. The outsole is no match for Spain's aggressively technical trails in terms of grip and durability. Lugs in the forefoot are almost completely gone after 400km. Still a great shoe, I'm on my second pair.

Your assessment of the SG5 is completely spot on. In my mind the SG5 is essentially an ultra-oriented Zinal. I think folks that liked the SG3 and SG4, but are disliking the SG5, would probably feel more at home in the Mafate Speed 4. Bummer that the Mafate 4 is $185 though, but I guess that's what a nicer upper and a Lite Base out sole will cost you. SG5 for more runable stuff and the Mafate Speed 4 for the grinding terrain!

I just bought a pair and looking forward to start using them (waiting for delivery). I had SG3 (put almost 1200km in them) and really enjoyed, after all I read from people using the 4s that were not so happy with some changes but seems this latest iteration hits the spot. I will be combining them with my Ultra Glide, Sense Ride 4 and Torrent 2.

Loved my SG 4 GTX, almost have 100miles and lugs still holding great. I have used them on some trails but tons of road with snow/ice/slush and just heavier rains/wet conditions, they have been fantastic! Just a tighter toe box so I can see it annoying anyone above the normal width foot shape

Good review of the speed goat 5 I’ve done about the same milage in my speed goat 5 I bought a second pair of New Balance fresh foam more trail for the long trail runs & the speed goat 5 for tempo runs on the trails around 15k but i,m using the speed goat 5 for long runs & tempo runs, I like the speed goat 5 shoes, right from your first run they feel good, the New Balance fresh foam more trail, are excellent for both long trail runs plus some bit faster stuff, but the New Balance took me a few weeks getting use to them, once ya get use to them they are pretty awesome, for long not to technical trails 👍🏼🥳🏃🏽♂️🙏🌲✅😀

I don’t have a good point of reference since SG5 is my first trail running shoe. However, I like the overall fit of the show and how it feels under the foot. I mostly use it for runs on access roads/technical trails, and it is great for segments when you want to go faster or have to dance around roots. I agree that lugs in the forefoot area tend to wear out. I have about 200 miles on mine. Will buy another pair when this one is done. Thanks for your work!!!

Hoka speedgoat 5 is one of my favourite trail shoes because it does offer some element of comfort .I have 2 pairs . Personally the outsole grip of this shoe is acceptable in wet or muddy condition although Salomon speedcross 5 does that much better. The trail running shoes with the worst grip that i ever wore was probably Altra lone peak 3.5 The foam can easily get abrasive which can make it less durable .

Incredible feeling shoe out of the box. Love the upper. Sadly, I only managed to squeeze 200 mi out of my first pair. Second pair were nearly flattened after 150 miles. The decoupled groove near the heel no longer exists causing the platform to get even wider. Wish the midsole was more durable as the rest of the shoe remains functional.😢

Nice review Kofuzi! A lot of our races here in New England start on a road, will veer onto a trail for a few miles, and finish on the road - so recently my "trail races" have been 1/2 trail, 1/2 road. Perhaps this sort of shoe would be nice for these races. I've just been using my Saucony Axons because they're fairly grippy but still road oriented.

Always great reviews Mike, Maybe its time to try this out again - I think the stretchy vamp thing may help - I had an older version that split on the lateral sides around that 100 mile point and since have been running mostly in Altras - sometimes they can get a bit sloppy. My current fave trail shoe is the new Timps - love them but always like to try different ones out. Curious how thesee would compare to them and also I don't remember did you ever try the Tecton X?

Hi, I loved the SG5`s which was the first version of the shoe I had tried. Midsole lasted great, lugs wore down a bit but, the main problem was the upper for me. The upper pulled away from the midsole after just 250 miles, same happened on the replacement pair I was sent. I don`t have wide feet, I actually found the volume to excessive to the point where I had almost pulled the lace holes to the point of touching. That said, great shoe, fit needs to be improved as does the durability.

I love my SG5 and bought a pair for my teenager as well. But I dont love it as much as the Asics Fuji Lite 2. The Fuji has the same cushy feel but has exceptional flexibility and grip in muddy rocky terrain - I'm quite a klutz sometimes and no other shoe has given me total confidence on such terrain on slopes ever. Not the SG5, I've slipped before especially on soggy muddy floors with leaf debris. Not in the Fuji Lite. Fuji Lite has Asicsgrip which is stickier and more flexible than Vibram that's why there's no need for foam in between the lugs.

Hi. May I know, does speedgoat 5 works for road running? Or challenger 7 performs better? In terms of the outsole, etc. Does the vibram sole on sg 5 wear off quickly when being used for road running? Since the price difference is not too huge, I want to choose the shoe that is more worthy and versatile (I want to wear it more likely for daily/road use, but will use it for casual trail running & hiking too).
@kofuzi Жыл бұрын
A1. Yes, but I wouldn’t use it for a run that was all roads. A2. No A3. Yes. See A1. To address your final concern, I would recommend getting a separate road shoe and trail shoe. You will be happier and it will be cheaper in the long run. But if you can only get one shoe and that shoe has to be a trail shoe (rather than using a road shoe on trails), and if you’re looking to save a bit of money, and if it has to be a Hoka, consider the Torrent

@vinkic2 жыл бұрын
SG5 midsole feels like the EVOs, but the upper of SG5 is more a road shoe upper (e.g. Clifton). Having run in SG4, EVOs and SG5 I have to say that SG4 and EVOs are more stable on trail because of the upper. EVOs are my all time favorite and I'm slightly disappointed with the SG5 although they are very comfy and fun to run on less technical terrains as @kofuzi said.

Those solid lugs of the Salomons do not grip as well on wet and technical terrain as Megagrip. You need to have some tackiness and flex. I would disagree, I think Megagrip is the best, most confident trail traction for rocky, techy stuff. I haven't gotten on the trail in the SG5 yet but the huge departure from the SG4 is frustrating. It went from a relatively accommodating toebox with great overlay protection and lockdown, to a slimmer cushion and stretchy road-shoe like upper, which does not seem to be as stable on rough terrain. I'm curious to try these in wide because just walking around in the regular width is uncomfortable - the way they narrowed from the SG4 is crazy. My foot isn't even that wide (can wear Saucony's comfortably). Probably going to try the Topo Mtn Racer once my numerous SG4s wear out. Not a fan of these narrow road shoes for the trail. And that's definitely premature outsole wear due to your use on roads lol

I think we’re actually in agreement on where megagrip is good. I apologize for not communicating better. Where’d I want a Salomon is when it’s just plain muddy or otherwise sloppy trail conditions

@@RareAirTwo4 yeah, the trade off for comfort vs technical/aggressive seems to be the biggest challenge for trail shoes. I have not tried the Maffate yet and hope that can bridge the gap a bit.
