Speedometer and Cable TEST and FIX on GBody vehicles (1979 Chevy El Camino)

I test my analog speedometer and replace the speedometer cable on my 1979 El Camino. This process should be the same foe all Gbody vehicles. El Camino, Cutlass, Malibu, etc. The speedometer cable will connect to a 700r4 Chevy transmission. Hope the video helps and leave comments below!

See broken plastic part, replace with new metal part. Remember, new flex shaft need lubricated in housing when new! They come dry or near it. GM did not use plastic drive end as the square if form in a die on a press. Cruise uses 1 long cable & one short. If eliminating, measure where the two meet in a comfortable bend, Mark with tape, add both usable ends and order on a few inches longer. Keep tied back from pinch points or exhaust. Flex shaft has a stop on the speedometer end and provides best contact. Use a few drops of oil on the speedo internal moving parts and let sit, face up on rag overnight to keep oil off the face.

I have a 79 el camino i want to put this type of gauge can you explain the colors that connect in the back of the gauge to make sure i wire them right when i do

Any chance you can take the diameter measurement of that speedometer cable grommet? I'm working on my 1987 Chevy V10 and I cannot find a replacement grommet for the speedometer cable. I can find replacements for 76-88 el caminos and they look exactly the same but they don't list the diameter.

hey this is weird cause on my 82 monte carlo that speedometer cable is from the speedometer to a box under the hood next to the window washer reservoir...that cable is hard to find..

The box is your cruise control. It has wires and vacuum hoses. Two cables, one drive cable from the transmission driven gear to cruise control in, then short cable from cruise control out thru grommet into speedometer. Use the center hole for proper alignment of cable to speedo in cluster. Aftermarket or replacement cables need lubricated before installing. Used a lithium based lube or graphite, just pull cable out, keep off the floor, spray, turn and insert 6-8” and repeat. Note; it fits the speedo end first and has a stop. Don’t want cruise, measure from old cables or use the drive mount on your trans. Measure up, allowing for room, take note of reading, insert tape measure thru grommet to speedo’s back clip and add the two together. If it measures 92”, but Rock Auto shows an ATK at 100”, buy the longer cable. Route with wide sweeping turn away from exhaust, use factory clips or cable ties, seat in grommet, place thru dash straight to gauge, reach & hold cable, wiggle as needed, when square cable lines up it will click and fall into place. Measure, lube. No sharp bends, keep away from exhaust, route straight and it last longer than you grandkids. ASE Master-Retired
