Put a good number of km's on the truck today and I can confirm that it is driving much smoother, especially rolling on the throttle I can feel the torque converter lockup releasing and gaining a few extra revs to aid in acceleration with less throttle than before.

How did the truck shift before adjusting the speedometer?
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 жыл бұрын
The biggest difference I noticed after installing the bigger tires was when I'd roll on the throttle to accelerate a little that the truck would sometimes stay in the same gear instead of downshifting, because the speed to throttle ratio at certain speeds wouldn't trigger the downshift, similar in theory to changing axle ratios (though not as extreme). Combine this with with the MCD eco mode and it made the truck feel pretty sluggish. After the Calibration throttle response and downshifts were much better.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 жыл бұрын
I should also mention that although it's called speedometer calibration, you're actually setting the tire size for the ecu/tcm to use for speedo, odometer and any other calculations such as upshifts, downshifts, eco mode, etc.

Thanks for the info. The reason I ask is because I have had a shudder when the truck shifts. Mostly lower gears. When I originally lifted the Truck I had 35" tires put on it. I went to ram and had them program the truck as close as they could get to 35" tires. I had no issues for quite a while. I put a new set of tires on it and shortly after I noticed the shutter began. I purchased a rough country speedometer calibration device. I program my truck for 35" tires but the shutter was still there. I then noticed my speed was approximately 4 miles per hour faster on the speedometer then what my actual speed was. I was driving 70 miles per hour on the GPS but my speedometer showed 66. I did some research and noticed a lot of guys just slowly decrease the tire size on their speedometer calibrated or and till the speeds match on the gps and a dashboard. I started that process today at 35" and worked my way down to 33.25" and that got the speed on the dashboard the same as a speed on the gps. I haven't felt the shudder since I did this but I've only driven it a few miles of on my way to work today. Originally I thought I was having torque converter issues with the shutter. Now I believe it was just the speedometer off so far like you said it messes with the shifting.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 жыл бұрын
@@Johnsplots I had to adjust mine lower as well, this is because the lower radius of the tire is much less from the flat foot print where it contacts the road. So if you were to double this new radius you'd have the size that matched the gps. (hope I explained that well enough). Not sure what the shutter you're feeling is but hope it doesn't come back!

Did you know that with oversize tires and no speedo calibration the distance traveled between oil changes is also incorrect meaning you could be 200km or more overdue for each oil change. Keep that in mind as your engine gets older. @hypertechperformanceofficial

I agree it isn't a huge issue. But depending on engine condition, grade of oil used and change interval it is something to keep in mind. I have a fairly new engine, use synthetic but change every 10,000km... If I overrun a change a little now it isn't a big deal but with an older engine or lower grade oil it wouldn't be a good idea.
@ryd-er-die6697
@ryd-er-die6697 10 ай бұрын
Actually the engine won't see any extra miles it actually sees less...the tires being bigger travel the greater distance...meaning miles driven are a hypothetical 1:1 tire rotation to engine rotation ratio with the stock tires 3000 tire rotations =3000 miles traveled..larger tires means a greater ratio hypothetically 1.5 :1 if the tire is 50% larger than stock 2000 tire rotations = 3000 miles traveled
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 10 ай бұрын
This is correct. I think the point I was making was that we measure the useful life of an engine by the number of miles it has driven, so if it says fewer miles driven it could be mistakenly assumed the engine is less worn.

I got a ram 1500 2023. The dealer had 35 Firestones on it and using WASE I find when doing 60 by the car it's 66 gps, 75 is add 7 for 82. I was going to get obdalfa but it requires a cable to bypass the obd security! And the cable goes WWAAYY up the panel below the steering wheel. So I just subtract. 4 for anything in the 40s, and 6 for 60s. The dealer said they couldn't calibrate the speedometer.

@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy Жыл бұрын
It doesn't seem like there is a end user option like the hypertech calibrator but it is possible that the dealer or a shop with a high end scan tool may be able to adjust the revolutions per mile. The reason I think this is possible is the CRV's from 2012 onward came with different wheel and tire options with different sizes ranging from 692 to 747 revs per mile. This suggests to me that there are options in the ecu to select the correct wheel size for the car. Might be worth looking into.

Also don't be discouraged if a dealer tells you it's not possible, try calling a different one or try to catch a tech-savvy technician. I had my Ram adjusted at the dealer before I bought the calibrator to do it myself as they had only limited options. The first time I went they told me they could not do it, once I returned with the mopar instructions they did it for me.

That I'm not sure of. The unit saves the factory settings before Calibrating and the manufacturer recommends reverting back to the factory settings before going for any warranty work. In my opinion the dealer will look for any excuse to avoid paying for warranty work so I would do my best from letting them know about it.

@NotHandsomeButHandy 1: nice name of ur KZbin channel 2: I need this device. I have a 2015 lifted Scion xB, with 215/70/16 so that’s 27” or 27.5” tire size. I get 2-3 mph off and 2 mpg loss. Which I’m use to it. Not a huge deal. But what it caught my attention, is that u can re-gain the mpg? Now I’m interested. Because it’s 15.5 mpg on my xB. Yeah I’m in a 4Runner territory 🤣🤣🤣 So did it regain ur mpg?
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 2 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say if you'll regain mpg as lifting the vehicle creates more wind resistance and no tuner can fix that. But since the larger tires have thrown off the vehicle speed to the ECU it's possible the transmission shift points are not optimal (if it is automatic). A tuner could allow you to adjust this setting (tire revolutions per mile), but I'm not sure what is available for the xB or what settings can be modified.

@toyotabrony 2 жыл бұрын
@@nothandsomebuthandy thanks for the response. Yeah and it is a 4 speed AT. And what do u mean by create more wind resistance? Does it mean I get more wind noise or reduce it?
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 2 жыл бұрын
When it comes to fuel economy the easier your car moves through air the less power is required to move it, so cars are designed with better aerodynamics than others. The xB is kind of a box, like a jeep, and not very aerodynamic. But little things like being close to the ground, side skirts, elements and diffusers on the bumpers, etc all help to channel the air and reduce drag. Typically by raising the vehicle you allow more air to flow under the car theoretically creating more turbulence and drag.
@toyotabrony

@@nothandsomebuthandy man that’s pretty informative man. The only way I can get my mpg back up a bit, is 1: upgrade my CAI/SAI. Or get a custom intake pipe and hook up a snorkel I want 2: get those windbooster device, for those that have modern cars with electronic gas pedals. Just connect between the wires that’s being control, to the pedal. And u can setup few things. Normal, economy, sport, sport+, and race mode. With race mode. The throttle body kicks in full fledge as an instant power. Not increasing hp. Setup economy mode will reduce that pose and create lag of the throttle body. Making it a bit harder to full throttle, but more beneficial of create better gas mileage.

@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 4 жыл бұрын
I have 35s on my truck. It really threw the Speedometer off when I put them on. I recommend doing the Calibration if you go that big. The dealer can only set the ECU to larger sizes available as options from the factory. Many people (me included) get this done to minimize how much the Speedometer is off but is not enough beyond 34". As far as warranty is concerned the Calibrator saves your factory settings on it and can return the truck to original settings if necessary then can switch it back when needed. This is handy when you need to go for warranty repair work.

It doesn't allow you to adjust the shift points manually but by adjusting the tire size the tcm will take into consideration the vehicle speed, engine speed, engine load, throttle position, tow/haul option and shift for best performance or fuel economy. A fully featured tuner may let you adjust more settings.

@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 11 ай бұрын
Tires yes, lift no. Your truck calculates your speed based on how many rotations the axles make in a given time. A factory sized tire say 31" tall would have about a 97" circumference so for each rotation you would have traveled 97". If you install a bigger tire say 35", then for each rotation you'll have traveled 110", but the truck still assumes you traveled only 97". Speed is calculated as distance traveled over time so if you are traveling a further distance then you are moving faster than the vehicle is displaying.
@nothandsomebuthandy
@nothandsomebuthandy 11 ай бұрын
And if the distance traveled is actually more than what is being calculated then the distance displayed on the odometer will be less than what was actually traveled as well.

Yes, no, maybe. The calibrator saves the factory settings and you can just plug it back in and go back to factory if you ever need to go in for service. But the settings it changes are the same that the dealer can do for you as well, so most may not even know that a change has been made. That said if you get a picky dealer then maybe.

Fuel economy definitely drops off fast with these big rigs after 80kmh they're not the most aerodynamic. Add to that the fact that most vehicles are geared for best fuel economy at 55mph (88kmh) once we put bigger tires on were are essentially changing those gear ratios. The Calibrator lets the vehicle adjust the shift points to compensate.

The reason why is that if you notice on the video I had the dealer program my tire size but were limited in options in the ecu, and when I did it myself the first time the tire size I entered threw the speedo off in the other direction. The best way I found was to choose a tire size close to the actual size then go for a drive with a gps speed app on your phone (trying to maintain a steady speed) and compare. Then adjust the tire size in the programmer until you find the size that is the closest to the actual speed. I feel like not all shops would be this thorough.
