Speedrun Commentary: Desert | GTA San Andreas

Just putting this here: there IS a backup if you miss the Verdant Meadows dupe. I've failed it a couple times recently (oops) and have had to do this. It loses about a minute+ but at least your run isn't dead. What you do is: buy the airstrip as normal, park the bike north of the buy marker into your garage and do all of Flight School EXCEPT Parachute Onto Target. Then, leave flight school, grab the bike and drive to Bike School in Las Venturas. Park the bike next to the marker so that CJ will get off the bike and be inside the marker. Do that and start pause buffering until your phone rings. Stop pause buffering, hold the phone call (TAB for me), and press F to leave bike school. Hold the call all the way back to flight school, enter the marker and let go of the call. Listen to it. When the call ends, press S (backwards) for about half a second and you should trigger Learning to Fly again. Complete Parachute Onto Target, then leave flight school. RE-ENTER FLIGHT SCHOOL AND LEAVE AGAIN TO GET RID OF THE BOX ON YOUR SCREEN, and then you can go to Stowaway.

The cities have their own stat ID (181) [0] that starts with value 0. When finishing The green Sabre, Yay Ka-Boom-Boom, Saint Marks Bistro and EOTL the game uses opcode 0629 [1] to set the stat directly. So after The green Sabre it is set to 1, after YKBB it is set to 2 and so on. They could have used opcode 0623 [2] but they didn't, I reckon it could be optimization. Anyways thats the reason why Saint Marks Bistro unlocks LV, in case you were still wondering. Same, I tried to do San Andreas though, but it's too hard for me. I moved onto Vice City, and I am enjoying that way more. But still, he puts a lot of effort into these videos, and he is really good at explaining stuff.

Well, you can actually do the 0* glitch after the finishing the mission "Snail Trail", and you can buy Zero after duping Toreno's last flight, and dupe Monster. I guess it's faster, but if you mess up the dupe, the run will be over.

Aside from entering the marker wrong, failing to dupe Highjack or Verdant Meadows in the cutscene may be related to pressing F (Hang up phone) too early, since that doesn't properly end the call (you can reproduce it consistently by holding F before releasing TAB). If you just wait a second after releasing the call it should be fine (CJ should be going through the "Pick up phone"-animation anyway). If this does happen, for Highjack you can do what is shown in this video and start getting on the bike to end the call, then start the mission again waiting for the cutscene to dupe and for Verdant Meadows the used call should be relatively short, so you should be able to just wait it out.

19:23 Seems weird to me that a Ranger spawns on that trail on the left (you can see it again at 19:35). I've never really seen any traffic cars spawn on that dirt road before and there are no wanted stars (it's not chasing after CJ either). Must have something to do with all the fuckery that's been going on until this point.

I make videos like these with a program called Open Broadcaster Software, you select your "sources" of video -- in this case, that's the game, the timer, and the input display (SKeys). You can arrange them accordingly and then record your speedrun as such. You still play the game as normal. It sounds like you might be on a one-monitor setup and are having trouble seeing your timer and game at the same time. In that case, you'd want to play San Andreas in windowed mode, but SA doesn't support that natively. However there are programs (D3DWindower, DXWnd) that you can use to achieve this - I use DXWnd every time I play. I was thinking maybe a video showing my San Andreas "setup" would be helpful, but I haven't bothered yet. Maybe I should do that now.

Doing the Bloodbowl (SF Stadium) Duping Setup gives you a "free" death. With the newer route (not in this video) you date Katie, which allows you to always keep your weapons on death. Dating Katie is required to unstuck one of the duped Jizzy (Cutscene) instances.

When you dupe missions, they don't "clean up" properly, so markers used during those missions are left behind forever on the radar.

Yes. However, FLYING, he has now started doing runs without scripts or splices, and is 2nd on the leaderboards. I always thought he was very good and didn't need scripts to do well, and he's proven me right. He's also great at finding new strategies or routes, which he's done in the case of the Martin Bridge skip. He might've cheated in the past, but regardless of that he's a clever and skilled player.
