it's sad that the xhosa course just disappeared before coming out. i've been waiting for it for a long time. i mean, certainly it is a similar language with zulu, but it's happy to see another one with clicks
@AndorianBlues10 ай бұрын
same with the Māori course, which they announced as "coming soon" at the same time as they announced Xhosa. Now they're instead saying they're concentrating on improving more popular languages only. Probably due to the pivot to AI - AI is reasonably good at languages with lots of data available (English, Spanish, Mandarin, etc) but sucks at languages which don't have much data to work with. So languages without a big corpus of text available like Xhosa or Māori are just going to fall by the wayside, unfortunately. It sucks.

Aw I hoped for another African course. I wish they atleast make more Asian courses

@@BANDANADEE2 I always hope for a Thai course. The Thai writing system is too complicated that it would be very difficult for me to remember without a Duolingo-styled method.

Most people don’t realize you can learn both languages by learning one of them. Zulu and Xhosa share a significant amount of vocabulary and grammatical structure. People of both languages can fluently have a conversation with one another and understand each other just fine. Only a handful of words are completely different from one another but for the most part if you’re fluent in one you’ll be almost fluent in the other

I found this video because I just finished the Zulu course, which I did not expect so soon. And that's because the course is so short and incomplete that I Googled to find out wtf, and found this video instead. You've distracted me and given me a fun few minutes to cool down, so thank you. Fun video!

As like you can speak Latin American Spanish as your native language, you can learn Guarani & Catalan, to make sense for your subscribers, you can make translation from Latin American Spanish to English Language with SUBTITLES

Baba, the word for "father" in Zulu being the same as Turkish surprised me :) Seems like they put a lot of South Africa specific music genres in the mix. Nobody talks about gamelan in the Indonesian course. Duolingo has this penchant of having the literal translations of the examples. Russian uses a posessive pronoun meaning "one's own" in place of others and the Russian course through Turkish uses the word "one's own" (Turkish: kendi) all the time. A sentence meaning "Draw your mother" is always written as "Draw your own mother". Frankly this also can be possible but most of the cases, don't.

It's hard to get a hold of that information! I did quite a bit of research and trial and error. At this point I'm not 100% sure of some of it, but it all made sense so I went for it. I had to read a few papers, blogs and lessons to get to the bottom of it.

@jccbm10 ай бұрын
@@loui2bolus265 The problem is the format change. With old Duolingo, you could get very far into vocabulary until checkpoint 1, now we need quite a few units to cover that (probably 6-10). Unit 2 is extremely basic on the new path tree. So, no, it wouldn't work. But we'll find something to do!
