I love ya Gene.......you're one of us.......a REAL down-home good 'ole boy who tells the truth. Gene's 100% right about the late, great NASCAR ( and Indy ) driver Leeroy Yarbrough. Leeroy was indeed the very 1st man to win the triple crown in NASCAR back in 1969. ( Daytona 500, Darlington/Southern 500, and the World 600 at Charlotte ) Leeroy was also ( at that time ) the 3rd driver ever to win the Daytona 500 AND the Firecracker 400 ( at Daytona ) in the same year......also in 1969. Back in the 1969 NASCAR season, Leeroy won 7 races, and was named the American Driver of the Year. During his entire NASCAR cup racing career, he attained 14 wins, 65 top 5 finishes, 92 top 10 finishes, and 10 pole positions. His NASCAR racing career started trailing off after 1969, due to no more factory backed cars/teams. Much like the great David Pearson ( who Leeroy beat to win the Southern 500 at Darlington in 1969 ), Leeroy very seldom ( if ever ) got to race for an entire season in NASCAR cup racing, but he was still one of the most dominant drivers when he did race. During an Indy 500 race, Leeroy was blowing the doors off of the entire field, having them all lapped by 2 laps.......and with only 2 or 3 laps to go, his engine broke a piston & blew up. The entire crowd cheered him as he pushed his own car down pit road. Leeroy did suffer some major head injuries due to violent high speed crashes. One was while he was doing tire testing for Goodyear at the Texas Motor Speedway, where he blew a tire in one of the turns and hit the wall at OVER 160 MPH. All of those head injuries from crashes were absolutely the reason he suffered major dimentia later on, which is a shame. In 1998, Leeroy Yarbrough was named one of the 50 greatest NASCAR drivers of all-time.
