My experience is the 383 can make the same power as the 6.0 but will not be as nice to drive around town. I built a 383 years ago to make 500hp the same as the 6.0, 500 with out accessories and open exhaust so more likely less in the vehicle. I had to get rid of the power brakes because there wasn't enough manifold vacuum to make them work, and it needed a decent stall converter. My price for 383 was $5,000 but this was in 2003, so it would be the equal to about $7,500 to $8,500 today. My 6.0 that replaced the 383 after it blew up was 2/10s faster in the quarter, a lot more street able and I didn't have to mess with the carb all the time. Today I don't think you can beat the 6.0 LS, back in 2003 the 383 was the way to go.

The cheapest solution is to use a remanufactured LM7 ($1500usd) short block and dump as much nitrous as you can afford. One car just dipped into the 6s on a stock bottom end 5.3. If 4340 forged parts with ARP fasteners make you sleep better at night, get a fresh block for $750usd, a 383 stroker kit for around $2000usd, and sent it to the machine shop for assembly ($1000usd for final machining and tolerance checks.) Youd have to waste a shit ton of money for an LS transplant for it to cost $7000. And a 5.3 with a BTR 212/218 @.050" lift cam will make 430 crank hp. Throw in a Comp 54-454-11 cam and valvesprings and it will make 460hp or more with stock unported heads. With ported heads it will be at 500hp. It's all been dyno proven. And IMO, wasting $6-800 on a intake for 6- 20hp is ignorant. Especially when the NNBS or TBSS intakes can be had for under $150 and will out power the LS1,LS6, and all those Chinese sheet metal ones.

what could one expect gas mileage wise with the 383 using a Sniper TBI or FITECH TBI any of the ones on the market today? as opposed to the set up on the LS you put in...or say any 3600 pound car or truck with 342 to 373 gears with a 26 inch tall tire running 70 to 75 mph and some mixed driving and a overdrive trans.
@speedwaymotors5 жыл бұрын
Jeff G Mileage has many aspects to compute and driving habits plays a big part. Other things is the terrain you drive in, altitude, and weather conditions. The EFI setups would net the best averages and in most cases the LS proves to be more efficient. Driven respectfully mileage could range from 15 to 20 mpg.

What about the torque?
@bigrich70263 жыл бұрын
So what your saying is just get a supercharged toyota 5.7 motor .I think..oh wait. That's what I say! I mean 600+ to the tires, gobs of torque , pump gas and toyota reliability and if you get good with the toyota 6spd you can blip the throttle and downshift and it sounds just like heel toe.! Or you can put it in drive and let it do its thing. It's built for a truck so heavy abuse in a car should be fine maybe a long combo but full-size car might squeeze it in there. Sorry for the effort and we are all hating. I think most of us feel you left alot of sbc on the table. I would love to see a complete running weight comparison..not bare blocks on a bathroom scale. everthing you need. SBC vs LS real weight comparison.

looks to me like there wasnt much of a shootout here at all. starts with $3500 383 stroker and buys valve covers then puts it against a $1200 junkyard motor and both total out to the same price? i have something similar torque wise to that 383 stroker for under $1000 including rebuild on a small block and have full fuel injection and theres no way id swap it for an ls motor. their only good for flat out high rpms they dont have the road manners that a small block has thanks to torque on the bottom end low rpm range. put a trailer behind a stock one and they get crippled. mines liable to snatch the trailer right out from under the load.

Gm never built a 383, so it's usually cheaper to buy a built 383 then to go through the labor of building one.
@tubehound694 жыл бұрын
@@danegrossnickle2550 A 383 typically refers to a GM 350 block with a GM 400 crank stuffed in it to get the extra 33ci through a longer stroke. Chrysler did make a 383, but that's not the engine the blueprint 383s are based upon. But I agree. If you want a 383 go get a used 350 block and a 400 crank and start from there unless you have thousands you just want to spend.
@danegrossnickle25504 жыл бұрын
@@tubehound69 you have to machine the block of the 350 to clear the added stroke, and depending on the rods used you'll have to turn the rod journals down to run a 350 rod. Anywho, it's still cheaper to buy a blueprint 383 than it is to buy a 400 crank and labor to machine plus rest of build. But anywho, we all do things differently. I'd rather have a scrramer 377 vs a 383. 377 is a destroked 400. Everyone wants a stroker, but a destroked motor will out rev a stroked motor...it's peak power is usually found much higher on the rpm band then a stroker.

Okay fellow gear heads, I have question. I have access to a brand new zz383 crate engine, well not brand new but never been run or even started up, this engine is about 7 to 8 years old has the fast burn aluminum heads, roller lift cam, high rise intake. According to GM this thing makes 435hp and 450lbs I believe? My friend has this motor sitting in his garage and is willing to sell for $5100 as is. I know that GM has discontinued the zz383 and replaced it with sd383. Question: Is $5100 a fare price for a 8yr old engine that's never been used or ran, also is the newer version of GM'S offering the same engine spec wise? I'm planing on putting this into a 91'z28 with a 700r4 trans and stock rear-end I have some old 350 blocks and a 400crank that I may just have built using some type of Vortec cast iron heads. I hope for 425 to 500 hp and over 500lbs torque, something I can use as a daily driver.

Forged Steel crank, alum. heads, roller cam, forged internals, carb... dist... Just a good deal for the $.. and you won't lose a friend if something goes awry with the zz motor... 🙂🤘🏼🙉🙊🙈🤑

350 stroker: Cool, simple, lots of periodic tuning (unless efi), uses a lot of gas. LS: complex (...relatively), runs and starts more reliably, uses less gas.

2200 bucks will buy you a Edelbrock RPM top end kit. If you got a good 350 it will get you 410hp by just bolting it on. Spending money on the extra stroke doesn’t do much good without a good top end. If it were me I’d build the 350 top end first and enjoy the easy 410HP for awhile. Later you can always stroke it to 383 and you will already have a great top end to take advantage of the extra cubes 👍🏼

If you had used AFR's with a single plane intake the HP would have been near or over 500HP and the 383 is synonymous for torque anyways so the trade off is minimal on the single plane intake. But if you really are going to compare "APPLES TO APPLES" you have to build them as close as possible. Heads and flow#'s, cam lift and duration, and fuel injection for the 383 Small Block like the LSX. Too much bs for a LSX in my opinion. They want more for the parts, hence why world made that special block that accepted LSX heads and factory SBC bottom end.
