Where are these heads cast and machined? Why not just machine one end of the heads for accessories? Then they can be used for either application depending on hows they're installed. Unless they're REAL intended use is for those circle track racers that are looking to cheat tech inspections. Why not cut a 5 angle valve job? Who's ports/architecture did these heads copy? That info would tell everyone who's CNC porting programs would work on these castings. Also, your web link says they're forged......and we all know they're CAST....But then the question is, what alloy? 6061? 7076? Heat treated to T6? All details any engine builder would like to know.

How do these heads compare to the L98 113 casting?. Intake, and exhaust volume to be specific.
@speedwaymotors2 жыл бұрын
We've seen tests on stock 113's that flowed around 195 cfm @ .500" lift on the intake and around 151 cfm @ .500" lift on the exhaust. The Speedway Motors double hump heads flow 232 cfm @ .500" intake and 173 cfm @ .500" lift on the exhaust. There are lots of variables here, but in general the Speedway Motors head will have bigger valves (2.02/1.60 vs. 1.94/1.50) and bigger chambers (64cc vs. 55.9cc) when compared to a stock L98 113. The L98 113 castings can be ported and stuffed with larger valves to flow in the same range as our double hump heads, but they won't have the same power potential due to the older chamber design. Also, note that the double hump heads are not drilled for accessory brackets, by design.

@@billtribble7197 way back in the day trw used to sell forged flat top like the l2256 for 350's and a piston for 283''s as well...long ago, for 307's. I inherited a 72 2bbl 307, 110,000 miles, from a wrecked nova, I re-ringed with bearings, slapped on a performer manifold and cam, hei ignition with the msd module, holley 1850 and headers, 8.5 pump gas beater. I foot braked that B, for 13 or 14 years in multiple plain jane cars. It didn't have the bottom end like a 350, but it would spin to 6500, no problem, with self ported gm993 heads. It was a free motor, deadly consistent foot brake street car motor, never broke any parts, just wore it out with appx, 5000 passes down the strip on 87 octane gas oh and it won many rounds and money, and I was a lousy foot driver half of the time. My other motors were 305's with the same parts, same results, super dirt cheap, round winners. I am going to rebuilt the 307, flat top hyper pistons, or regular cast ones, with 305 vortec heads. I got all this stuff taking up space, and nobody's going to buy it from me. It runs what it runs, super dirt cheap, and when someone askes, and I say 307 they think I am lying. Especially when that can't catch you at the finish stripe, with out going way under.

Do not use Speedway vintage finned valve covers with roller rockers, got the top end package with heads, intake gaskets and valve covers. They recommend roller rockers with these heads but the included valve covers have some casting materials inside each cover that will interfere with aluminum roller rockers causing valves to hit the pistons and Speedway is unaware of this nor do they care that you have to fix the bent valves, crap!🤬

I have a set of 461x heads, what does the x mean at the end of the casting number? They didn't have the double Camel hump they have a short sharp rise next to a tall rise with accessory holes. I kept the 1.94 intakes but put new 1.60 seats and stainless valves. This was the first set of heads I learned to replace seats, mill and tap for screw in studs and guide plates and ported & polished when I worked at dover cylinder head in orange park florida. I could never find any information on them other than other machinist telling me they might be 70s truck heads or dz code factory race car experimental heads. Some of the machinist told me the x means experimental. I just want to know if I screwed up some history or just made truck heads better

Not the earlier castings, and those were among the best of the camel hump heads. I know, because I once owned a 327 with the early heads with 2.02 intake valves. There were NO accessory holes. Had it in a sweet '66 Chevy short wheelbase fleetside, full custom cab, with original 3.73 posi rear end. Gorgeous truck. ( Truck originally came with a 283. ) Also had a double roller timing chain & gear, 4" Holly intake & 750 single pumper. It would only run oh high test, and ran like a bat out of hell. I'm still kicking myself for selling that truck decades ago.

These are great heads (I have a pair), but don't buy them from Speedway! This joke of a company sold me a "guaranteed to fit” header set, but the headers were far to large. Not only did Speedway charge me a 15% “restocking fee” but they wouldn’t even pay for shipping. I spend an average of $10-15k each year on parts to rebuild cars, but I’ll never buy from this company again.

And who's the designer that thought it great to NOT HAVE ACCESSORY BOLT HOLES? Was that some kind of "deal" with GM? AND WHY NOT A 3"-exit exhaust manifold?
@3NationCultivation2 жыл бұрын
Originally most accessories had steel brackets to hold them that mounted externally to simplify manufacturing the cast components. Even early blocks didnt have side motor mounts they mounted at the front. As for the exhaust. 3in exits on rams horn style exhausts like that would kill velocity on N/A applications. Most N/A sbc dont need any more than 2.25 exhaust. Going too big can reduce velocity and kill power in your rpm range you use the most.

But what they’re not telling your boys and girls is aluminum cylinder heads will make the engine run noticeably hotter especially in the summertime... ( I do live in a very hot climate of southern California I put aluminum cylinder heads on a small block 350one time I said never again take days off back to cast iron , The weight reduction is not worth the headache of the overheating )
@milojanis49014 жыл бұрын
Absolutely incorrect!!! Aluminum has far superior thermal dispersion properties than does CI. Whatever it was that caused you to run hotter was definitely NOT the aluminum heads. They have every advantage known to man over CI. That's why almost every V8 made now has them. Motorcycles that used air cooling, and made 1-1/2-2 hp per cubic inch haven't used CI for head manufacturing since the 1960s, unless you count H-D, which is another story entirely!
