Love the way this stich looks. I'm curious why you didn't just join the chian with a slip stitch instead of coming back to close it up later. I would definitely use a stich marker or something to hold it together so it doesn't get twisted at the start

The extra chain on the beginning chain doesn't make sense...I always end up with one extra chain at the end of my first row of DC. Believe me, I've counted many times over...
