Get your Spektrum safe modes working with the Radiomaster TX16S with EdgeTX/OpenTX. I show you how I accessed 4 different flight modes on my AeroScout S2 1.1 RC aircraft with a Spektrum AR631 receiver, no forward programming required!
There is a new update of this video that you should definitely watch! Clarifies and simplifies a few things.
• UPDATE!!! Spektrum RC ...
Interested in the Radiomaster TX16S? Here is an Amazon link for the one I purchased that will help the channel. Thanks!
amzn.to/3UD9hgF
Modes:
(1) PANIC mode with auto level (I Don't bother with this, just switch to safe mode if I'm in trouble)
Ch 5 = +100%
Ch 6 = -100% / 0 / +100%
*You could set these parameters to a momentary button to replicate the recover button when in AS3X "Expert" mode
UPDATE: It is now 2/13/2024 a year after making this video and I just realized this "Mode 1" is actually PANIC mode, lol. I thought it was safe mode. ANY TIME CHANNEL 6 IS AT 0 OR -100 THE RX WILL BE IN PANIC MODE, REGARDLESS OF THE CHANNEL 5 MODE. ALTHOUGH SAFE + PANIC MODE WILL SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCE THROWS.
(2) Safe mode with auto level (This is a great mode!)
Ch 5 = +100%
Ch 6 = +100%
(3) Safe intermediate mode without auto level, "envelope" mode with bank limits
Ch 5 = 0%
Ch 6 = +100%
(4) AS3X expert/aerobatic mode
Ch 5 = -100%
Ch 6 = +100%

Thanks, total noob here, if I am correct, where to put this file on my radio? Means that all the key binding is already done, just bind the radio to the Spectrum and thats it, or am I wrong? Amazing video, thanks

@@PrimusIV Make sure you have a TX16S. In this video, I think I was using version EdgeTX 2.7.1 so if you are on a different version that might effect some things. To migrate the .yml file into your radio you just need to move it into your /MODELS folder on your radio but before you move the file, first look at the list of models in your /MODELS folder. Rename this AeroScout model file from "model1.yml" to one that you don't already have on your list. Just change the 1 to an unused number. Then move the file to your SD card /MODELS folder. Once you go back to your radio the "labels.yml" file will have captured the new model and it should now show up on your radio and let you select it. You might want to change the model ID number in the internal RF setup if you have other Spektrum receivers on the radio. Then bind it. Make sure it gets bound as DSM X 2F. If it gets set for DSM 2 many functions will not work. You really only need to do this setup with the logical switches and special functions if you want that non-standard flight mode. Just to get safe working, you just need to map channel 5 on your transmitter to the switch of your choice and bind with safe select enabled and you will be able to switch between the 3 standard flight modes. I have newer videos that show other options including fully unlocking these receivers and since this video, the Forward Programming Lua scripts have come a long way so you can setup anything you need to on a Spektrum receiver. Good luck and happy flying!

@@PrimusIV I just experimented with this on the bench with an AR631 and when I deleted the channel 5 assignment it just stayed in AS3X mode. Note that AS3X is just wind mitigation, it doesn't self level. Also, AS3X doesn't activate until you advance the throttle to at least 25%. Then if you move the plane around the control surfaces will "wiggle" as it tries to compensate for the movement.

I still didnt create a model for Apprentice i did my 2 Eachine/Volantex warbirds and its way better experience flying those on tx16 than with tx that comes with RTF kit(no expo, no rates, gimbals are very cheap). As a beginner i really like that mode intermediate + SAFE cause i want to have more control but still have benefits of SAFE.

New flyer here for about a month now. I have the AeroScout, so this was perfect for me and this deserves a subscribe, as that was the best explanation I've found. Now I can give my friends DX7 back to him, since I've got my radio working with AS3X and SAFE mode. Though with my TX16S MKII EdgeTX the, LOGICAL SWITCHES, needed to be all 0's at V2. So, Func = a=x, V1 = CH5 or CH6, V2 = 0, AND Switch = SA(Up)....On L01,L02,L03 the V2's are 0. Then from there, the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS are as you stated. Anyone wanting to use a panic switch out of 3D mod, the momentary SH switch with Override, CH6, Value = 0, Enable works..It's only momentary though. I figure I can hit the SA switch with my index finger quick enough into FMod1 or beginner, as this is the mode it goes into with the panic switch activation.

Involves a receiver firmware update, factory reset to "jailbreak" it, and fresh forward programming through a Spektrum NX6. Now with added flaperons while keeping safe and AS3X. Unfortunately just could not do all of this with the TX16S. Details will be revealed!

If you mean perform to detailed setup and flight modes in the PC software yes, I am aware. There are only a few receivers that are compatible with the PC software for setup like that. I was disappointed initially but now that the EdgeTX lua scripts are updated and much more capable I have no need for the PC setup, just need to unlock the RX. So simple to do via Forward Programming either with the Spektrum transmitters or my RadioMaster TX16S with EdgeTX. If you haven't seen them yet be sure to check out my Spektrum to EdgeTX series. Even if you aren't using the EdgeTX there is some very useful info there on unlocking and setting up Spektrum receivers. What I did with this AeroScout is still usable but by unlocking the RX it is essentially obsolete.

First, Shane, thank you so much for creating and sharing this video. This information is still extremely hard to find. Thought I'd add something I learned that might prove helpful for some. I have a new AeroScout RTF that came with a Spektrum DXs transmitter in the box. After some initial flying I decided I really liked the plane but strongly preferred my TX16S over the DXs. I knew also that at least initially, I wanted the TX16S to control the plane in *exactly* same manner as the DXs. I figured if I could accomplish this I'd be more confident in changing over to the TX16S. When I initially set it up the TX16S as outlined in this video I tested it thoroughly including measuring and comparing control surface throws. When doing so in Beginner mode I noticed that the surface throws when using the TX16S were different (significantly less) than the DXs. While searching for an answer I happened to notice in a later video of yours Shane (Ep. 3, Forward Programming...) you showed the Special Functions screen which showed values of plus 100 for both Ch5 and Ch6 for Beginner mode, not Ch5 plus 100 and Ch6 minus 100 as outlined in this video. So I made this change and vuala, now every aspect of the planes behavior including control surface throws on both the TX16S and the DXs are identical! Again this may not be a big deal but because I initially couldn't reconcile the differences I was concerned other issues could be lurking so I thought I'd share.

p.s., might also be worth sharing a tidbit I came across on the DSM setup section in the OpenTX/EdgeTX documentation. Spektrum transmitters that use DSM will also recognize a value between -50 and -100 over channel 14 as a request to disarm the throttle. I know many people simply program a switch to override the regular throttle channel value but using channel 14 this way is better as the Spektrum receiver will use this request to have the ESC actually disarm the motor. I just followed the example in the manual that uses a switch to override channel 14 with a value of -80 (minus 80) to disarm.

Thanks for all the info! Yes they have made a few changes with the new AeroScout so some of this video may become obsolete. I've heard you can setup reverse thrust on the new AeroScout since it has the Avian ESC. In episode 4 I get in to that a little and there is a link in the description to the script developers video on using the TextGen script to set up the ESC. If you try that you'll have to let me know how it goes. That is interesting that the receiver will accept data on channel 14, I'll have to do some tests with that!

I just re-read the latest AeroScout manual and they don't state that you can change the channel for safe so it may be locked still. See if the channel can be changed by holding the sticks down and in and flipping the new switch/channel 5 times like the other SAFE airplanes.

Any idea how one could make this work with a Corsair. With retracts and flaps on ch5-6?!!
@shanesdiy
@shanesdiy 7 сағат бұрын
I will first suggest having a look at the updated version of this video, link is in the video description. It clarifies and simplifies a few things. Unlike the AeroScout used in this video that has safe always enabled and f-modes and panic fixed to channels 5 & 6 if it is a BNF plane with a Spektrum receiver that came with flaps and retracts they are normally setup with "SAFE Select" which you can turn safe on/off as well as manually set the f-modes channel. When SAFE Select is enabled during the binding process, you can assign the channel of your choice by holding the sticks down and in and flipping the switch 5 times off->on->off. Obviously the switch must be assigned to the desired channel and you can use any channel between 5-9 assuming your radio has enough channels. It will take at least a 7 channel radio. FYI on the SAFE Select enabled model, you most likely won't have a panic setup. Compared to the setup in the updated video (highly recommend using that one rather than this older method) you would just not do the channel 6 panic mode setup since that is your flaps, and instead of the safe mode switch on channel 5, change that to ch 7, 8, or 9. Then do the assign procedure detailed above.

Also, can the telemetry data from something like a Spektrum AR637T DSMX 6-Channel AS3X Telemetry Receiver be displayed on the TX16S?
@shanesdiy
@shanesdiy 4 ай бұрын
Search through my RC Guide playlist and you'll find many videos about telemetry and Spektrum and Forward Programming with the TX16S. Yes, it can absolutely collect and use Spektrum telemetry values. Since I did this video, the EdgeTX developers have made huge progress with the Spektrum interface with radios like the TX16S. The DXS transmitter doesn't have the wired trainer port. It does have a wireless port for Spektrum's wireless system but I'm not sure if that can work with the TX16S. If you get the 4in1 model TX16S and add an external 4in1 module to it you can then use the TX16S as the trainer master with any Spektrum DSMX transmitter wirelessly.

Great video. I have a little different setup and wasn’t able to get the modes working. I have a 1.2m Trojan with landing gear on channel 5 and flaps on 6. RM Boxer. What channel would SAFE be mapped to?
@shanesdiy
@shanesdiy 6 ай бұрын
Hi! The method in this video isn't applicable to that plane. By default they don't have a channel set for safe and also don't have a panic channel set so this method won't work. Simplest method is #1, in your model setup for the DSM module configuration make sure channels 1-12 are enabled. #2 go into your mixer and for channel 7 or 8 configure it to use the switch of our choice as the source. #3 bind to the airplane with the safe select method set to ON. #4 make sure you have full 100% rates selected and all the control surfaces operating in the correct directions. Move both sticks down to to the inside and flip your selected safe switch 5 times (OFF->ON->OFF = 1 "flip"). Once you do this 5 times, if done correctly, it will assign that channel (and switch) to turn safe on/off. Alternatively, if you've got the latest 0.56 forward programming "MIN" scripts (latest as of the date I write this) on your radio you can set the safe channel in forward programming. You still need to map the switch to the channel in the mixer. FYI, I recently picked up a Radiomaster Zorro which is the same screen and setup as your Boxer and plan to do some forward programming content! Let me know if you have more questions. I suggest watching the multi-part series on forward programming and get the latest forward programming lua scripts for the B&W radios.

I've got many videos explaining other options. This particular plane has an RX that is locked and the safe modes are on 5 and panic on 6. With many other planes the RX lets you assign the channel and you can use any channel from 5-9 for safe modes. This receiver, the AR631, when unlocked has channels 7-9 available for safe, reverse thrust, etc. so you can keep your PWM servo channels available for flaps, retracts, etc. For example, this particular AeroScout, in my later videos, I have it set up with flaps and reverse thrust. Channel 5 is now one of the ailerons, channel 6 is available, and channels 7 and 8 are safe modes and reverse thrust.

Yes it is the AR631. The new one also has this receiver. Different planes usually have a different setup for the BNF. This plane has a fixed default channel for safe on channel 5 and channel 6 for panic. Many other planes allow you to set your own safe channel. On this one if you want a different channel you have to unlock it as shown in my later videos. The manual for your plane will tell you what your safe options are.

The double twitch means you enabled safe but needs a switch properly assigned to be able to select the desired mode. What model are you working with? Some like the AeroScout here, have channel 5 set to safe f-modes and ch 6 as panic until/unless you unlock it. Other models don't have this restriction and you can change it. Many require you to assign the channel by moving the sticks down and in and flipping the desired switch 5 times to set the f-mode channel. If you have that type, you must assign the desired switch to the desired channel in the mixer and then you can assign it. You can also assign the switch to the channel similar to what I've done here in logical switches and special functions but that is more complicated. The main reason I've used this method in this video is because I'm combining the safe f-mode and panic modes to produce a non standard flight mode.

@@stevejamelskyj5761 I would need to see how you've setup the f-mode switch and to what channel it is set to. To keep it simple I wouldn't set it up in logical switches and special functions like I did in this video for your application. If you've set those up, I would disable those special functions for now until you verify the channels are setup properly. Just go into our mixer, create a mix for whatever channel you want to use for safe on/off (f-modes) and the desired toggle switch will be the source. Don't set anything in the "switch" field of the mix. Then with the plane and tx bound (be sure to use DSMX and NOT DSM2 or it will not work). Don't have any low rates programmed or the "stick and switch flip" method will not work in low rates. What RX are you working with? AR631, AR637, or something else? I assume your TX is the Radiomaster TX16S? I have newer videos that discuss how to get safe working, using forward programming, etc. that may be more helpful. Some of them are a little long but if you want to learn, the information is very useful.

Is there a way to configure turning everything off (no safe and no AS3X). I’m coming back to flying RC and I’m not used to gyro stabilization.
@shanesdiy
@shanesdiy Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can but I'll say that with just AS3X you most likely would not even know it's doing anything except the airplane will not be knocked around so much by gusty winds so smaller planes fly like larger ones. Personal opinion is to just leave it on and turn off safe. AS3X doesn't take any control away from you. If you want to shut it all off you have to unlock the receiver to enable full Forward Programming functions. Then you can setup the modes however you want. This video just shows you how to switch between the "pre-packaged" flight modes. @shanesdiy
@shanesdiy Жыл бұрын
My understanding is if you purchase the AR631 (or AR637T) off the shelf the forward programming is not locked down so you have more control without "jailbreaking" the receiver. At the time of the video I was on EdgeTX 2.7.1 and the internal module was 1.3.3.20. I think 1.3.3.20 is still the most current. I do not know for sure but I think you'll have to set everything up for Safe/AS3X as with the off the shelf receiver they don't have any default settings applied. In case you were unaware, there has been some major updates to the Forward Programming Lua scripts and last I checked the latest Forward Programming version is 0.53. The Forward programming Lua that comes with the multi-module "pack" is only v0.2 which is missing a lot of functionality. With the new v0.53 you can pretty much do everything required to setup a Spektrum receiver via forward programming. To get the latest Forward Programming files you need to get them directly, not through the multi-module pack. Below is a link to the 0.53 files if it works. On the github page there is some additional instructions to set it up. I'll put a second link below the first with the github link. The files in this zip folder need to be placed in your \SCRIPTS\TOOLS folder. You also need to create a folder in your \MODELS folder called DSMDATA. That is where the transmitter will store the model setup for wing type, elevator type, etc. for use with Forward Programming drive.google.com/file/d/1JkTGSYRAkH99U9xNifJOci6-sLcFDOp2/view?usp=sharing github.com/pascallanger/DIY-Multiprotocol-TX-Module/tree/master/Lua_scripts

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I have the same transmitter, the radiomaster TX16S and am very impressed with what it can do. So i have a question on how you would do this with a spektrum reciever( specifically the AR636A) where the landing gear is channel 5. This is on the eflite f-16 thunderbird jet but should apply to others where landing gear is on channel 5. This is probably a simple question for you but this radiomaster transmitter is probably capable of flying the next space shuttle with all it can do!

From what I see the current E-flite F-16 uses the AR631 receiver which has AS3X and SAFE. I don't believe the AR636 has SAFE, only AS3X so would only use one channel. The AR636 has 6 physical channels but also has 3 "virtual channels" from what I read. I believe you can program your AS3X function to any channel 6-9 but you might have to use the Spektrum programmer #SPMA3081 according to the manual. Manual also says AS3X is OFF by default according to the AR636 manual but the BNF version of the receiver that comes with the E-flite F-16 may have AS3X on. I can't find a manual for the version of that airplane that came with the AR636. The AR636 is not one of the newer "SMART" receivers so I don't think it uses the forward programming feature to set it up.

Hi thanks for the comment. The off the shelf AR631/AR637 must be setup with Forward Programming as they don't come with any of that setup by default. There is a new Forward Programming LUA script for EdgeTX that adds significant functionality. I've started a new series on it. Episode #1 shows how to get the software onto your TX16S. Episode #2 should be out soon and will go over how to unlock a BNF receiver and we will go through the Forward Programming menus a little to show how to change some settings. Episode #3 will be a fresh program from scratch on an unlocked AR631 which is essentially the same as an off the shelf AR631.

@shanesdiy Жыл бұрын
Channel 3 is the throttle on AETR which is what I use on my TX16S and which I believe is the most common with EdgeTX. Spektrum is TAER but that conversion happens behind the scenes so you don't cut channel 1. Many methods of doing a throttle cut. One of the simplest is to create a special function and use the 2 way toggle SF switch to override channel 3 with a value of -100. My throttle cut of choice is a little more complex but this basic method works fine.

As long as you are bound using one of the DSMX protocols (not DSM2) you should be able to go to the telemetry tab and "Discover New". Anything available will appear in the list. Some may require deciphering as they don't always get a clear name. Once that list is populated it can be used elsewhere in the radio like in Widgets.

Hi Jim. I'll assume you purchased the BNF model with the AR637TA and that you are using a Radiomaster TX16S? Correct me if wrong. First, do you want safe? If not, re-bind but without pulling the bind plug out and it should disable safe all together. Second, if you do want safe, you need to map the desired toggle switch to the desired channel, you can use any channel between 5-9. You only need to map this toggle switch in the mixer, no need to add it to one of the inputs if all it is doing is switching safe flight modes. Third, in your model setup be sure you do NOT have "Enable max. throw" turned on. If you do, the next step won't work properly. If you cranked up rates anywhere else over 100 reset them back to -100 to +100 for this process. Fourth, while bound to the airplane make sure the control directions are all correct. Normally aileron and rudder are inverted, elevator is normal and rates at 100% (can't have any dual or low rates set). You move the sticks down and to the inside and flip your SAFE switch starting with it OFF (-100%) turn it ON/OFF 5 times. On the 5th time the control surfaces should do the "dance". Then try your safe on/off switch. Alternatively, if you've got the latest forward programming lua script installed, v0.54 as I write this. You can make edits in forward programming. I have a few videos on that as well. Episode 3 coming out soon. You still have to have the SAFE switch programmed correction per steps 3 and 4 above to be able to switch between the 3 flight modes in forward programing. Give this a shot and let me now how it goes. Happy to help if I can! PS- just remembered, be sure your protocol is DSM X and not DSM 2 or telemetry and forward programming won't work.

Oh, and for that airplane, you don't need to do the tricks I did in this video with the logical switches and special functions. Just need to map one switch to the desired SAFE channel. If you plan to use the reverse thrust, that has a default channel assigned to 7 so might want to use 6 or 8 for SAFE. Not sure if 5 is anything on that plane.

Assuming your receiver is locked like mine was, you'll have to update the firmware and do a factory reset to "jailbreak" it. They have the SAFE and panic set to channels 5 and 6 and I was not able to move them. The AR631 in my Timber X I was able to set the SAFE channel using the sticks and flipping the switch on the desired channel 5 times. Since I made that video I have updated my AeroScout AR631 receiver firmware, performed a factory reset to "jailbreak" it. I reprogrammed it from scratch using my son's Spektrum NX6 with forward programming. I was not able to do it from the EdgeTX Forward Programming LUA script. They just don't have it far enough refined. I've moved one aileron to channel 5 and programmed for flaperons. Channel 6 is free and I have SAFE on "virtual" channel 7, didn't program a Panic channel, I just flip to SAFE if I "panic". Doing it this way I was able to retain SAFE and AS3X with separate aileron channels. If there is a way to do all this from EdgeTX I couldn't figure it out. Now that the Forward Programming is done on the Spektrum transmitter, I am able to make small adjustments from my TX16S, I just could not do a full reprogram from it. I'll be doing a video on all the changes I have done to the AeroScout soon.

Have you watched my multi part series on EdgeTX to Spektrum programming? I cover alot and do discuss where you'd change the configuration to setup flaperons. I also have a specific video where I test my flaperon setup and towards the end talk about the setup. Did you find those videos? They cover alot but granted aren't a focused tutorial on setting up an AeroScout for flaperons. I have my second AeroScout that still needs flaperons, I've already unlocked the receiver which is covered in the EdgeTX to Spektrum videos. If I make a new video it will be starting off after the RX firmware update and factory reset.
@shanesdiy
@shanesdiy Жыл бұрын
For now, the basics are: 1. Take the aileron Y cable off and connect the ailerons to channels 1 and 5 is how I have it. 2. Must unlock your receiver with the Spektrum software and USB programming cable. 3. Perform the factory reset. 4. Setup the model in the transmitter so all controls work as needed, then in the Forward Programming "pre-menu" enter the Model Setup to specify the wing type (flaperon) and what channel the two ailerons are on. 5. Go through the First time setup in forward programming, adjust channel reverses as needed. Specify the safe flight modes channel (ch7) at that point. You must have the desired switch assigned in the TX already. (2-5 are covered in my Spektrum to EdgeTX series) 6. Setup the flap switch with the appropriate mixes, curves, elevator mix as required and in my case I extended the servo travel to allow full swing of the ailerons even while flaps are deployed. I discussed this in my Flaperon video. This should get you dangerously close. I will put a new flaperon video on my production list, might be a few weeks before I can get to it unfortunately, busy day job schedule over the next few weeks.

You definitely have to bind with safe activated. In the manual for the plane does it tell you which channel is SAFE tied to? In my video the default channel assignments were using channels 5 & 6. If your default channel assignments are different that will change the setup for your application. Later today I will see if I can find any info on your planes default settings and let you know. The momentary switch would only work for the panic mode. To turn safe on/off you need to use a 2 or 3 way switch. In my setup I didn't use a panic button, I combined the two channels to get 4 different safe/as3x flight modes. Sounds like you aren't trying to get that complex. Check back later and hopefully I can find some info on your plane.

I think you meant "Night Radian"? I looked up the manual and on page 9 describes setting your Safe channel. The AeroScout had 5 & 6 preset, your Radian doesn't have a default channel. You need assign a switch in your mixes to any channel between 5-9 (5 is default for lights but I don't think it uses the data, just the power from channel 5). I personally would set any 2 or 3 way switch you want to use for Safe and set it to channel 7 so you keep your physical channels available. I use switch SE and down is SAFE. Page 9 describes how to set the channel. Assuming you already have the throttle, rudder, elevator, and ailerons all set and working the proper directions, you'll move both sticks down and to the center (and hold) then flip the safe switch you assigned up and down 5 times and it will assign that switch to safe mode. Start with the switch down and one "flip" = full up and full down. On the 5th toggle you should see/hear the control surfaces move briefly. Do not set your throttle cut if you have one setup. Either remove your prop or keep clear of it in case it rotates during the process.

The method you said by using the switch and flipping it 5 times is what I originally tried and did not work. My plane does not have ailerons but it is the 6ch AR631. Just not sure where to start...as far as menus go...do I put the settings in the Flight Modes, Inputs, Mixes, Output, Global Variables or Logical, Special Functions menu? I am good at following directions and I followed your video to the exact settings originally(after switching to EdgeTX) and no luck. I do think in my case I will have to get a FWD Programming Spektrum TX to unlock it because even though we have the same RX yours might have not been locked? I just wish I had someone in my area with a Spektrum radio and this issue would have been resolved. When I had OpenTX on the radio I even tried the lua scripts but in that menu it only showed Gyro settings but a bunch of Unknown_XXXX and one with a value of 109???
