Rule 17 TI, CI, and SI are used only at the beginning of any syllable after the first one. I do not understand this rule since that there are many sillbles that start with CI for examples Circus circit etc

Denise, I appreciate you taking time to answer my questions. I think your work is really important, BUT as a foreigner who learned to speak and spell without knowing the rules of English I still think that most words are written the way they are just because. The rules can be useful to some kids that need more explanation or help to memorize the way a word is written, but I don't think they can explain EVERY word. Still I am so thankful for your work and videos, they are really helping my kids.

Thank you 4 this spelling list. I have some questions: 1) why is secret written with a S instead of a C? It's the same sound... so is there a rule to learn to be able to distinguish when to use S or C? 2) When you said SYMBOL my kids heard CYMBALL. Besides listening to the sentence to know which one is it, why is one word written one way and the other the other way if they sound exactly alike? is this 1 of those homophone words? 3) why is MORE witten w/ a silent E at the end and HUMOR is not?

I often have problems spelling because I have a hard time distinguishing certain sounds a letter makes I don't believe it's my hearing although when I was in first and second grade I did have my hearing tested a lot. Do you have a lesson that's best suited for just sounds.

Why does the word vague have a u in it. Shouldn't it be spelt vage or vaige

How should I explain to students why I am pronouncing the words seasOn with a short o when most of them say it with a short i sound? Same with humOr. Teacher says it as "or" when many of my students would say it with "er." I'm not sure what to say to students when they say I'm pronouncing words differently than usual...hate to say to them "You just have to remember it's spelled differently than we say it."

i thought that we pronounced "the" with the long E sound when it precedes a word beginning with a vowel, and that we pronounced it with the schwa sound when it precedes a word beginning with a consonant. Please clarify! I do get the emphasizing part, too.

The 'o' in season is like the word button it's pronounced with a short i sound. As for humor the 'or' can be said both ways. 'The' is an exception word. Sounds like th'u' with a short 'u' sound.

Hello! Yes, if you were breaking by morpheme, you would break it therm-o-meter. However, if you're looking at linguistic syllable division, then /mom/ is a closed syllable, with the vowel saying its short sound, so you'd break the syllable accordingly.
