Thank you Denise, for putting these videos out. My DD9 and DS7 are doing these together every morning. It's amazing. Spelling is finally making sense to them. It's so helpful to me as a Mom, because I am a native from Brazil. Although my English is pretty good, I have a slight accent and sometimes my kids correct me, so I am not so helpful trying to sound out letters. Ha! :) thank you so much!

I'm having trouble dividing some words(five-letter words) in to syllables. I used to divide it like this: ca-bin instead of cab-in, de-nim instead of den-im.
@abbyandlissy8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. Now, it's clear to me and the link you provided helped me a lot.
@pearlgirl4 жыл бұрын
Lynn Artizo Good question Lynn- cab-in uses a short vowel ‘a’ sound. Therefore it needs to be a closed syllable. We add ‘b’ to follow the vowel ‘a’. So Cab-in is broken here. The same for den-im the short vowel sound for ‘e’ so it needs the consonant ‘m’ to follow the short vowel ‘e’ before we break the denim after the ‘m’.
@sheromovavasilisa76922 жыл бұрын
@@pearlgirl I also have this issue with dividing words What if I do not know how to read a word. Say, I see denim in a text. I'd be inclined to divide as de-nim, like in Pe-ter. Is there a rule to help with that?
@pearlgirl2 жыл бұрын
@@sheromovavasilisa7692 if it’s an unknown word you find the vowels mark them a small x and notice there is only one constant thing between them. So does it make sense to have the long vowel sound(Open syllable- vowel says its long vowel sound or name) as in de-nim? Or the short vowel sound (Closed syllable)den-im? Which makes more sense? If you honestly have no idea, try them both. Ask is the vowel Long or short?

I was confused by the sounding of basket, the second syllable. /kit/, but it sound more like /ket/.
@LogicofEnglish4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a great observation! You are right. In English, many vowels in unstressed syllables are pronounced as a schwa sound. It usually sounds similar to a short U, /ŭ/, but in some sound contexts it is closer to /ĭ/. When we are discussing the spelling of the word, we exaggerate the vowel so that it's easier for students to hear what it "should" be saying if it were stressed. /bas-ket/ instead of /bas-kit/. This technique is called Say-to-Spell. You can learn more about schwa here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXPJhWCQjbx5fNk

Isn't there some debate about whether to continue teaching cursive in the US now? I've been teaching abroad for several years and I'm now teaching in a country where in addition to new phonemes my students have to learn a completely different script. Coming from a language where there is a one to one correlation between letters and sounds, English spelling is a real challenge for them. I really appreciate your work and thought to use this video with my pre-intermediate adult students but as soon as you started writing in cursive the corners of my mouth descended :-( Any chance you'll make a new set of spelling videos with print? :-)
