Your first coming out video was how I found you. I've known I was gay since way before you were born. But I was so freaked by the realization that I couldn't do anything about it. By the time I was in my twenties (in the late 1970s) I had completely given up on the idea of ever having a gay date, let alone any sort of relationship. But somehow I managed to tell my best friend, a woman named Connie, that I was gay. Eventually, she suggested that we get married - as a marriage of best friends. We did, and it worked out as well as it could, and there was no question that we loved each other deeply. You talk about Matthew Shepard's death as being revelatory to you, and to a certain extent it was to me as well, since I live in northern Colorado, not very far away. But the day that truly brought me to the realization that, even as a senior citizen, I had to come out to the world was June 12, 2016. In my mind I can see you nodding your head in understanding, but I'll explain for anyone else reading this. On June 12, 2016, a man walked into a gay bar in Orlando Florida and killed 49 people, wounding many more. I couldn't stop crying. So that was the day I came out at the age of 59. Now I am 64 and lost my best friend Connie last year from a combination of diabetes, cancer and heart failure. So what will happen to me next? I have no idea, but I have decided that I won't hide away for the rest of my life, so we'll see. We'll see.

This is an older comment -- funny that two of us came across it by complete chance lately! -- but I'm really hoping you are doing so well these days! It means a lot to me, as a significantly less experienced (aka younger) person also living in CO to know there's folks out there like me (and us!) still finding their path in life. I sincerely hope you find a partner you're truly in love with, one day. Never too late!

Loved it! I was brainwashed by my family's church to believe gay was evil and to avoid it like sin. For many years it was like I was living multiple lives, none truly my own. Because of my religion back then I went through lots of different levels of brainwashing, even self-imposed brainwashing to try to convert my mind from gay to straight. When I was in my early 20s I was serving in the Navy as a straight identifing self brainwashed young man. I thought I was going to beat this gay thing. But then in the middle of the night, I woke up with a guy in my hands. I had slept walked up behind him and was giving him a back massage while he was watching TV. Realizing I was sleep walking and in a very gay situation, I started to tremble, eventually apologized for shaking, explained I had slept walked into the situation, excused myself, and went back to bed Over the next few days I woke up to the reality that I was never going to escape being gay. And if I didn't get a handle on it quickly, I could end up sleep walking into a really bad situation very soon. So I started my coming out journey, which actually took many years to complete, but it took me no time at all back in 1985 to find a boyfriend and fall in love. The biggest thing that helped me in life to love myself just as I am was to realize the only opinion of me that really matters is mine. I love who I am and I realize others do, too. But there are also those who don't, and that used to matter, but not any more. Not at all. Zero. Those people aren't allowed anywhere near my life.

I was a disappointment to my parents - and for years a disappointment to myself, until I realised that their expectations of me were rooted in their own thwarted desires for fulfilment. I would always be wrong and whatever shape my happiness was would be wrong too. Your parents did a beautiful thing - to set aside their conception of your future and to accept and support your hard won vision out of love for you. Love who makes your soul sing. - and sing that song your whole life long.

My heart just broke through such a big part of the story, but what a delight and relief it was to hear the last part, that your parents were so accepting and loving! It must've been such a tough journey for you to work through all of this. It's amazing that you did it, though, and that you managed to accept yourself and let go of trying to be someone you're not! That is so powerful! Thank you for sharing this!
