It's really comforting to hear you talk about friendship standards, because I always feel like a bitch when I think about what I want out of a friendship, when in reality it's not too much to ask for respect, being able to talk about everything and supporting each other. But in every friendship I have ever had, I feel like I was more committed than the other person, which doesn't feel great. On the other hand, I tend to distance myself from my friends when I don't feel good about myself or something in my life, because I don't want to bother anyone (because in past "friendships" people made me feel like I was), but to my friends, me distancing myself always looks like I'm abandoning them... Friendships in general are just really hard to figure out and once you have been through bad friendship breakups, it's harder to let people in

Also side note: for girls who are looking to make new or more friends, some advice that actually has worked for me, -Branch out to people you know already and try to get to know them more, they could be closer friends then you know -try working on a passion project or fun activities, you will meet people with similar values and goals! -don’t let age, distance, or gender influence your decision for friends because I honestly have some old ladies who are friends and also some friends I don’t even see in person that often but they are still close friends -be vulnerable (people who like you the way you are, they are keepers) -reach out to family members, some of my friends are siblings or cousins or acquaintances -I know it’s cheesy but try new things, you never know where or to who it could take you! Also this community is so relatable and wholesome, support to all!!

I used to feel a lot like you do when it came to friendship. That if someone did not put in the time and effort to see me, then they were not worth all the time I gave them in return. But after talking to some of my friends about this, I realized that a lot of the time the friend who has not reached out in a while, is the friend that needs the most support. You never know what someone is going through. I have learned that sometimes it is worth putting in more effort up front, as long as they are open with you as to why they have become distant. Communication is key when it comes to your close life long friendships!
@dsbfock Жыл бұрын
everything you said about friendship and relationships in general is so freaking true and i’m absolutely agree. in my 25 years a learned to think just like that and remind myself i deserve the same energy and love i’m giving. there’s billions ppl on the world and i deserve good ppl around you who see my worth and love me as i do love them. cause honestly? i think i’m amazing person with great personality, who supports ppl around me, i’m kind, smart and care so much about my ppl and i constantly try to be better version of myself. And to have someone toxic in my life ? fuck no. now i have high standards for ppl in my life to let me close to me and if you can’t meet those standards, you will always be just someone i know, not someone i love

Your friendship talk was very reassuring, there is a lot of content about friendships but they always revolve around extreme toxicity, but they don’t cover the regular usual friends who are actually really good but then they do something that is a shocker where they’re not consistently doing something bad but then they do something that’s a slap to the face, this is more common and it hurts really bad, and when you have compassionate, it’s easy to fault yourself wrongly that to admit that they’re the problem and let them go.
@lucia7919 Жыл бұрын
I understand you a lot. You couldn't imagine how many times i've felt that. It's so sad but it make us stronger and stronger. Your reflection about friendship is simply brilliant! I'm totally with you on the whole friendship discussion & the feeling of caring more than the other person. I myself am in a semi-toxic friendship for almost 20 years. There are phases where it works great and phases where it's getting toxic, but up to now the "good times" overpower the bad. (This friendship was formed when I was 3 years old, so we went through all the stuff together, so she does feel like a sister.) Mostly mentioning this to say: I get it. Anyway, when you talked about you always being the one to ask, and therefore concluding that the other person just doesn't care as much, my thoughts instantly went to neurodivergent people. I myself have ADHD, and I severely struggle with keeping contacts upright. When I read a message and for some reason don't have time to immediately respond, I forget - for days, sometimes weeks. I personally try to communicate this in advance, so the person doesn't feel neglected. I also request them to just tell me, when they feel like I don't care enough. But I am one of the most caring people I know (if I might say so myself) - I'll literally jump if someone needs me - but I struggle with the whole regular texting & regular meet-up thing. Thought I'd just add this to the whole discussion, because while I agree that if you're the only one that cares, you definitely should cut them out, I also think it's important to remember that some people might struggle with the concept of remembering to text (back). But communication is key here - if they just cut you off randomly, there's nothing to justify.

I really needed this advice rn because I’ve finally gotten out of a toxic friendship. I realised I had been doing too much, paying for stuff, always giving gifts and over sharing, just hoping they’d love me back and I realised that person never really cared. It’s lonely but also peaceful because now I’m not always guessing whether they still like me or not. I’m so done with going above and beyond for people just so they’d like me.
