Here in part 2 of our spending the day bushcrafting with the Condor Kephart knife mini series, we primarly show the carving ability of this knife. I also show one of the small issues I have with 1075 carbon steel. Check out a link to part 1 and the Baryonyx Knife Company below, which is the best place to purchase Condor knives:

I did not know that there was such a real difference between 1075 and 1095....but you clearly demonstrated that to be a fact. Good info! Thanks!!

+Charles Larson Thank you for the kind words, Charles! It has always bothered me, especially when you see guys doing table-top reviews on 1075 knives and just say that being HCS, you can strike a spark with flint. I think they are missing the whole concept...hahah! Thank you for watching, my friend! -Dave

Say Heah, I think I mentioned it before. My Kephart Style Knife was made out of a Blind Horse Bushcrafter, all I had done to it was have those broomstick looking handles flattened and polished and now the B H Bushcrafter looks like a more expensive Kephart. I wear a large glove and it fit's like a glove, The Sheath after I had it flattened caused the knife to fall out very easy but I got a square bottom leather dangler sheath so now I don't have to neck carry it. It's a 4" blade made out of a O1 steel in a scandi grind and it looks very similar to your knife, Very good review and for reminding me of my Kephart, Thanx.

Yrah the Mora Classic is one of my Fav's, it's the shorter blade. So I got a Mora Exclusive # 277 but it's the laminated blade and I think it's a stainless steel with a carbon core, But I'll be using it mostly as a neck knife and I also have my Grizzly Firestarter which is a Magnisium with a ferrosium rod on it and that will even start a damp timer on fire because of the extreme heat it lroducrss. Dave on Bushcraft on Fire illustrated it on water and that's why I bouggt mine, Infact I have the wooden large one and the smaller meral one. I really like them, Then I seen magnisium already powered in little plastic bags and that's a great udea, But all I do is scrap a little pile and blio, blap, blam, "let there be fire".

What is best grind for 1075 steel? I’m proficient at either convex or flat grind. Which keeps sharp edge for longer? I’m thinking convex, however it doesn’t seem to be as sharp as flat grind.
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 6 жыл бұрын
I like a convex or saber grind with 1075. Very easy to sharpen that type of steel on those particular grinds and I enjoy that because 1075 doesn't always hold an edge as well as other steels. I think you are right about the convex grind. I don't use full flat grinds very much, as they edge seems a bit more prone to chipping at times on a 'bushcraft' style knife. Great questions, David, and I hope this helps! -Dave

Say Heah, It just happened that way for me. But I was able to team two pretty good wood working knives together. which provrs to me, If it's meant to be, It will be. The loose Sheath for my Bokor Black Vox Told needed a Nylong Belt Loop with a Handle Strap, Because I took it off another maker knife, The strap was alittle too loose, By putting my Mora Classic #1 on the strap, Not only dod it tightend the strap, But now I Piggybavk two good knives to work wood with making task's chore's like you just did,simple as pie. But in one place, very conenient. Thanx for that reminder.,,.

+HighCarbonSteel Love You saved me some money because I was all set to buy one of the condor Kephart knives... A brief explanation is in order. I have been considering taking a bush craft course and one of the requirements is that your knife be able to throw sparks from chert (flint) and with all the trouble you were having that knife would have been a wash out for me
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
+bad hat I am happy to be of some assistance! It's a decent knife, however, I just have all sorts of problems getting sparks from chert/flint with this knife, my Bushlore and my Woodlaw. I have never had a problem with Moras or any other high carbon steel knife. Let me know what you go with! -Dave
@badhat3051

HighCarbonSteel Love I thought I'd give the Schrade SCHF9 a try its a 1095 High Carbon Steel Blade not sure what the Rockwell rating is but if its up around 59 that should be hard enough to throw the sparks from chert/flint. Plus at nearly a pound in weight and a 1/4 inch spine it sounds like a beast... any way it was under 28 dollars. Now I have a Condor Nessmuck blade and it came out of the box as dull as it is ugly but after a little work its razor sharp does great with Ferro rods and even throws some sparks from chert but they are off of the tip of the knife its still an ugly duck, I then broke for a name from my youth the Camillus Bush Crafter. Back in the 50's and early 60's the Camilus knives were top of the line and had been since 1876 but were out of my reach, then a few years ago the company filed for bankruptcy and were bought up by Acme. So not being encumbered any longer by a kids pocket book I readily sprung for the blade. even though it was an inch short of the required length. out of the box it was a beauty felt good in the hand, full tang 1/8" thick but so dull it wouldn't cut hot butter. it is advertised to throw HOT sparks from the blade. and I have yet to get it to throw even cold sparks, but it does a great job on fire steel. So I'm put off with 1075 steel blades
@HighCarbonSteelLove
@HighCarbonSteelLove 8 жыл бұрын
bad hat Even though some say there is nothing wrong with 1075, I have never had much luck with that steel. Sure, some knives are just fine with 1075, however, for the most part, from my experience, they don't hold an edge very well, nor do they do a great job with sparks from chert. 1095 has never given me a problem, nor has a lot of knives that are listed as "high carbon steel" that are unspecified. It's just something about 1075, each and every time I have purchased it. I think your schrade should be fine, I just wonder about the weird coating that all of Shcrade knives come with. It seems like it would inhibit a lot of the knife's capabilities, which is why I have never purchased one. Sorry to hear about your Camilius Bushcraft not doing everything it was supposed to do. I also read that they used to be the standard. Nice talking with you, my friend! Keep me posted, for sure! -Dave

This was a nice video showcasing a Kephart style knife. Thanks for sharing it. In case anyone is interested in a extremely nice Kephart, ML Knives (Matt Lesniewski) specializes in them. He hand forges from 1095 hi carbon steel. I have one and love it. I've used it around camp and field dressing an elk last fall. Old Horace Kephart knew how to design a knife. Matt's website is www.ML-Knives.com. He's a great guy to work with, too.
