Yeah I have a little “fort” area in the woods on my farm. Place to get away and ground in nature.

This certainly brings back memories. Good to see boys still carrying on as they should. After building many forts, the styles and amenities steadily improved. Benches, shelves and a fireplace with a chimney allowed many hours of shenanigans, lol. Hope you do another build or show modifications as things progress. I enjoyed this.

So funny we built a shelter just like that when I was your age. But the walls were made of vertical logs twined together. It actually lasted a few years until it burnt down. We had a glass table in the middle with lots of candles on it. Got too hot and broke the glass and fire / lighter fluid went all over the wooden floor. Good times. Be carefull about that.

Go back to the early 80s and that was me......except my hut was up about 15 feet in a big old macrocarpa tree. We only have a couple of poisonous spiders in New Zealand and they only make you ill unless you are dying already. However, only one of them lives in urban areas and then only in and around buildings, so sleeping on the ground outside is pretty safe. The only thing about wooded areas here - especially in macrocarpa trees, native bush or stands of old pines - is a little creature called a Weta. The ones found in our macrocarpas when I was a kid were a mix of tree and ground wetas and being nocturnal, they got pissed real quick when they were disturbed during the day by my climbing in and out of my tree hut. They are brown and look like an oversize cricket or grasshopper with large back legs and a body that is two to three inches long, half to three quarters of an inch wide and then their legs come out from that. They look HUGE as a result and they are the heaviest insects in the world (no joke), so you definitely know when one lands on you...and they like to drop onto you if they can once they are disturbed. They aren't poisonous, but they do have a nasty bite, so having them walking up your body is not advised! They also have a rasping call that you hear from late afternoon and it is like the sound of a stick being scraped hard and fast across rough concrete. You DON'T want to hear that sound coming from several directions when you are in your tree hut, trust me! There is no weta repellent and bug spray does not kill them...although strictly speaking we (as a nation) are encouraged not to kill them at all. Tell that to a kid who just had 20 of them crawl out of various places and climb on him! It was a very short trip down from my tree hut - as in I jumped from the thick branch by the door and landed with all these wetas falling off me except the two that bit me. Trust me - they never bit anything else! I still have a phobia of them even now!

Off isn't going to work. You need Raid or Ortho Home Defense. Got the start of a good fort. You should put a tarp over the top, or a lot more limbs, otherwise it will leak. Use Para cord to tie everything together.
