I've always wondered if a #2 with a black coffee would net me more fish

I'm actually heading down the 5 soon and was wondering about the sac, but have no idea where to go. Any recommendations for a wader?

There's really not many wading opportunities when the water's higher like this. Most of those options will open up downstream of Redding once the water drops a bit.

why do you prefer a 350 grain scandi? i thought this rod was rated at 22o to 250 grains..?

4 weight One? There's no way that rod is rated for a 220-250 grain scandi. I'm fishing a 210 scandi on my Hydrogen 3 weight, and that's at the lightish end of the rating. 350 might be a little heavy but he said he's throwing a tip and a leech so the extra weight wouldn't hurt. Those rods are strong and the whole thing is gonna feel pretty light regardless.

yup i have a 4 weight Sage one. Rio recommend 250 grains for this rod. I just re-checked their line selector

The Rio line chart I just looked at recommends 270-300 for the scandi. cdn-tp2.mozu.com/15440-m1/cms/files/25f14871-055a-4110-8282-5e0d637500c6 The Rio line selector tool can be a little funky. Still, Mr. Hazlett knows what he's doing and there are no rules to line weights - use what works. The scandi recommendations are for entirely floating line - just the head and a tapered leader with a small fly. If you're fishing a tip, heavier is better.

The Skagit window for this rod is from 275-325 grains according to Rio. First off, that recommendation is more of a guideline than a strict rule. I've fished this rod with 325 grain heads and it's really nice, but that 350 grain does offer a nice deep load when you're really trying to drive the rod as far as you can. In general these four weight trout speys are going to like heads around 300-350 grains. The 3wts will be in that 225-275 range for sure.

thanks for the heads up Jon. I have the 300 in the skagit but i love the Rio scandi versi-tip even better

There are no steelhead on the Lower Sac. This was what Cal DFG has purported in the past above Battle Creek.

aren't they fishing for resident trout not migratory fish (steelhead)? I wouldn't use a 3 weight for a steelhead... or is there no trout either?
