As been pointed out a couple times you never use the first gear on the auxiliary shifting up as this is the low gear and have about the same ratio as the previous main gear in 4th auxiliary

My two cents having driven a 4 x 4 is that the gears in the auxiliary transmission in my truck are: deep reduction, lo, direct, overdrive. So deep reduction was rarely used. But Spicer produced a range of auxiliary transmissions with varying ratio configurations so some transmissions really did have four on-road ratios. So commenters that said "you never reuse first" are only correct for some transmissions. Matter of fact, I never used deep reduction on the road - there was no point. Mine has a deep reduction because it was a semi-off-road truck used in the forest as well as on-highway. Top speed of 48mph by the way with 38k double-reduction Timken axles

are you sure you go back to 1st in the auxillary after each main shift? usually you go to 2nd-3rd-4th in the auxillary because 1st in the auxillary is usually redundant once you get rolling. I have a 4 speed- 4 speed spicer combo in a 48 Kenworth on my channel
@Darstrom
@Darstrom 7 жыл бұрын
Matthew Jones I've sure seen it! Maybe you don't need to use it unless heavy loaded, but it's still the next gear after each "jump" or it wouldn't be a 16 speed right?
@sabrinacordell6290
@sabrinacordell6290 7 жыл бұрын
No you don't go back to " deep under" 1st on the aux it's too low. It's like shifting from 4th to 3rd. Start with both in first then shift the aux up through 4th then shift main to second and pull the aux back to 2nd then third and 4th. Then shift main to 3rd and bring aux back to second and start splitting again. The term 16 speed is rather a misnomer You have sixteen total gears to work with but don't necessarily use all of them, It's like the 15 speed which is a ten speed with a deep reduction box. You have 15 gears to work with ,but if you start in deep 1st and go all the way through the gears, you only make 12 shifts. Bringing the aux back to deep under on a 4x4 or 5x4 will result in a hell of a grinding and wild rpm . Think of pulling the range selector up in 5th . in a 9 speed and shifting back into 1st instead of 2nd. It's a downshift. Hope that helps. We have an 83 Pete 400 A model Cat with 5x4 . A 72 Pete 4x4 318 Detroit. 1978 K.W. with a 14 speed Spicer and a 73 Road Boss with a 12 speed Spicer.

No problem. From the grandfather on down, there's a hundred years combined experience in the family business. I suppose the best way to tell people is ,after shifting has begun, forget about deep under 1st in the aux . It doesn't come back into play until you stop and pull out again.

You do not go BACK to 1st on auxiliary once you shift the main up. Then you have to learn where you're going to go when you have a rapid slow down cause somebody pulled out in front of you. Like anything with Trucking it's all about seat time and your personal pride of doing it correctly so you're not grinding or jamming or abusing your equipment. TRUCK ON!!!

It must be interesting to shift both at the same time. Suppose you’re in 3-4 and you want to shift to 4-2. You go N-4, decrease RPM significantly, 4-4, 4-N, regain much of the original RPM, 4-2. Or some other sequence that stays within the engine’s limits. Right?
@FirebirdCamaro1220
@FirebirdCamaro1220 3 жыл бұрын
If you were in 3-4, you would only shift the main to 4 and leave the brownie where it is. Otherwise you would effectively downshift, 4-3 is a lower gear than 3-4, if that makes sense

@allterrainoutlaw2958
@allterrainoutlaw2958 6 жыл бұрын
Ok I understand that I'm stupidly late but I got one question. With the twin sticks, does one need to double clutch when you shift or can it be a regular press in the clutch and throw it in the next gear. and for using the auxiliary shifter should you by default clutch on every shift when operating the auxiliary? the reason i ask that is because i've seen countless videos of people not clutching when shifting the auxiliary (not knowing if they are floating).
@Darstrom
@Darstrom 6 жыл бұрын
JD714 Gaming Floating is exactly what they're doing and it is the easiest way to drive these since they are made to work like that, clutch only for start and stop! And if you're gonna use the clutch it has to be a double press in order for the gearbox to eaiser match the speed. All the same goes for the aux. Atleast this is how I interpret it
@allterrainoutlaw2958
@allterrainoutlaw2958 6 жыл бұрын
ok thanks.
@sabrinacordell6290
@sabrinacordell6290 6 жыл бұрын
Either way is fine,but the clutch was there for a good reason on older transmissions. Double clutching the old transmissions was almost necessary because they were not forgiving when a shift was missed by a half tooth or so. Pretty much all truck owners and road test required strictly double clutching.

Try having the one I had in a 62 Emeryville. 5 speed main 4 speed aux and then a set of 3 speed rear ends. She could crawl at less than 1 MPH or going downhill with a tailwind break 100 at top gear in theory as no way a 238 Detroit could produce the needed HP to do that crap. But loaded heavy she could and did move regardless of the freaking weight. Pulling a triaxle high walled grain hopper one that could hold 2500 bushels if needed that truck could still move it. How do I know that well Fall of 94 there was a thunderstorm that blew up during harvest. 2 full weigh wagons of beans 2 full combines in the field I was the only truck there. Boss said dump it all into me and get to the elevator ASAP. I was on the road 1st weigh wagon could reach the road from the edge of the field it dumped into me then the 2nd dumped into it along with both combines. I had to spilt weigh at the elevator about 4 miles away. Front 3 axles where over 70K back 3 74K empty was 28K 112K total weight in grain. That poor 238 sounded like a bucket of bolts afterwards and we had to overhaul it. But she was due for one at the time so while we waited for the fields to dry out we did the planned overhaul for her. Boss said I was throwing flames 5 feet out the stack.

Cool setup! To use them all you'd shift the aux 3 times for each gear in that 18 speed (don't use low gear other than in low on the main) If not using it hopefully it was left in 'direct' or lower

If you do it by accident you eill have a really tough time getting any lever back into gear. You might even have to stop the truck to do so. If it happens going loaded downhill you're probably screwed
@iBackshift
@iBackshift 5 жыл бұрын
yeh heh buddy...you go one gear on the main; then auxiliary box go 2,3,4 then shift one gear on the main; auxiliary back to 2,3,4 then shift another gear on the main; auxiliary back to 2,3,4....and keep on shifting. The auxiliary box is 1st gear, 2nd gear, Direct(3rd) gear, overdrive(4th); this is why you never stick back in first on the Aux-box - first gear in the aux box is too low. You use that gear when you blow a shift on a hill when having to downshift, trying to get the aux box into 2nd; the truck will slow down enough you can jam the aux stick into first to allow you to start to upshift again to 2nd gear.

Yes I got this cleared up for me a while back. The video is really just made to show the layout and since I'm self learned and never hauled any trailers with this truck I didn't know. Still thanks for pointing it out!
@iBackshift
@iBackshift 5 жыл бұрын
Ok buddy, you have to do a video of hauling a load somewhere around 35000 kg's, out on the blacktop, doing about 90kmh and come to a hill. Then the hill will slow you down and force you to "row" gears like you'r rowing a canoe up the creek......hahaha. Hope to see your shifting prowess some day. The big test will be down shifting the main to a lower gear and putting the Aux in 4th(overdrive)..... w00!

@Darstrom
@Darstrom 3 жыл бұрын
@@stefanm.247 They may be thinking about european twin sticks, which have to be split a couple of time (correct me if I'm wrong) in order to get up to speed. Scania had a gearbox where the second stick acts as the split or high/low range on modern boxes, so only 2 gears. But non the less these are not easy to drive, but if you ever try one or even buy, shift without the clutch. It's easier to learn, especially if you only start driving with one stick. Take it out of gear when no force is applied (either by acceleration or engine braking) and wait for the RPMs to drop until you gently press it into next gear as the engine speed matches the rear wheels.

Sry for the slow reply. You can leave the Aux in 2nd or 3rd and drive the main like a normal 4 speed if you're bobtailing, otherwise you better shift the aux at least 1 time between each step of the main
