I saw this in Boston occasionally and especially in New York. JFK was the worst. My advice to GA pilots even if you have to refuel in the middle of the night, try the smallest airport you can find that is still open 24 hours. It is great to meet the challenge of being on your game to go in and out with the big boys (like I have done at IAH, DFW, STL, PIT, JFK, BOS) and if you are sharp and on your game, the controllers (and the other crews) will appreciate that. This crew did not have a choice. They are actually *working* and this was their assigned arrival. They cannot just divert to Macon.... :)

If you look at the actual airport diagram, the instructions from this ATC were horrible. He left them hanging to do what they wanted to do after crossing 26L at Bravo 4 when he gave no further instruction except taxi to the ramp. There were multiple ways this aircraft could get to their ramp none of which were specified by the controller after crossing 26L. So, they were actually correct in a way in what they did. He did not give accurate enough taxi instructions. Also, he failed to notice that his radio call to SW 3597 was actually answered by a different aircraft, 5284. He just blurted out "Wrong" and did not use the aircraft call sign. Very confusing in a day and age when call sign read back is required at most airports and actually I have heard other Atlanta controllers get upset when call signs are not used. This probably confused the heck out of the other aircraft that was at Foxtrot. Very poorly done. Someone should pull the tapes and review this one.

The controller is actually giving very unclear instructions. He said, "Bravo to the gate with me", but later says he says he gave them different taxiways. @volleyballjerry
@volleyballjerry 2 жыл бұрын
"To the gate" without further instructions allows the crew to use whichever taxiways they want which at KATL will NOT WORK with all that traffic. Sometimes I would be departing KAUS at 1 AM and the only traffic on the ground or in the air at that hour in Austin were FedEx and UPS. So often I would be on Ground and get "Mooney 9494V taxi to Runway 17-L" from the FBO. That's it! This tower controller here is an example of one of the worst personality traits in aviation --- he is not as good as he thinks he is and thinks everyone else around him is clueless. Definitely condescending attitude from the controller. This is typical of a kind of bullying behaviour where the mistake of the pilot was followed by asking a question about what they were doing instead of issuing instructions to get them out of the situation, then making the condescending comment about them being in Atlanta. When I was a student pilot I was flying to an unfamiliar airfield on a solo and misunderstood the controllers instructions and ended up turning onto what I thought was final, but was actually the climb out for the active runway. The controller immediately issued me an instruction to get me away from traffic. I can just imagine what would have happened if the controller had said ‘what are you doing’. I would have freaked out and been speechless, or would have said ‘turning final’ cause that’s what I thought I was doing. The controller in this vid is an A hole and shouldn’t be doing that job.

Yup! Skywest 3597 made a mistake by not immediately turning left onto Bravo after crossing Runway 26L. It happens. Atlanta tower himself made *two* mistakes. #1 -- non standard phraseology "You're in Atlanta now, get it together" was nothing more than criticism that needs to be canned. The second mistake about this comment was that is was unprofessional and condescending. Does he really think the flight crew did not discover they mistakenly (almost) made a wrong turn on the taxiway? Of course they knew they made a mistake! It was not something flagrant nor intentional that requires "Possible pilot deviation - get ready to copy this phone number". The controllers have a stressful job. So do the pilots coming into an airport they are obviously new to. Gotta have better teamwork.

Arrogant controller He needs to slow down and give more specific directions to the ramp. "With me" is neither clear nor acceptable verbiage. There are CLEARLY multiple routes to taxi the Ramp 4 after crossing B4: Right on Echo to F3 left on Foxtrot and then right to Ramp 4 OR (his desired routing) Left on Echo, Right on Foxtrot 4, cross Foxtrot to Ramp 4. Let this be a lesson to ground controllers: if you have specific routing intended, be specific. ...and if you're going to get mad at someone and intend to vocalize it on the radio, be mad at the correct aircrew. Skywest 3597 was the crew in question, not the one who answered: Skywest 5284. Get it together indeed, Atlanta...be humble, people make mistakes. The importance is to make sure they are small mistakes and not just jam up the radio

Wow, some bad controlling. He cleared them across the runway, and then cleared to ramp with him. Pilot doesn't have to take the most expeditious route though ATC would ASSUME that they would. American tow grabs Skywest's clearance and a clearance is only valid once acknowledged by the AC. ATC set up this cluster f*** with cowboy controlling. I don't miss flying to ATL, late runway swaps.. non standard phraseology. She was far more tolerant than me. If I was feeling frisky, I would have asked for the tapes to be pulled, his operating initials, and a phone number for the supervisor.

ATC definitely made some errors in his directions. However, the pilots need to be aware of their location and both follow directions and ASK IF THEY ARE UNSURE. Most pilots are simply lazy and expect tower to hold their hands. If SW3597 was going to Ramp 4 and were indeed "on their own" to get there, why would they go right towards ramp 3?? Here's the reality. All movements outside of aprons are CONTROLLED. SW3597 was not given instructions beyond crossing Runway 26L at B4 other than to stay on frequency to the apron. Again, if you as the pilot in command are unsure of the directions given, ASK FOR CLARIFICATION.

USUALLY ATC is very good, but occasionally the ones who aren't are, coincidentally, the ones who also have attitude. The fact he misspoke and told them "left B to the ramp" after they crossed 26L, when he meant E is a testament to what I'm talking about. Then he adds the "you're in Atlanta now, get it together", which is annoying since he is very clearly the one who made the mistake and confused the crew. Nice job, ATL...

The taxi from B4 to 4N would logically be a left turn onto E followed by a right turn to cross F onto the ramp via F4. This is with the benefit of being in an armchair/not the end of a long day etc etc, and ultimately all the ATC had to do was say what I just said, but I'm not sure of the logic behind the pilots' actions.
