I introduced Bobotie to the rural northeast USA. When they ask what it is, I tell them a South African version of meatloaf. So far everyone here has loved it. I grew up in SA and once a biltong lover, always a biltong lover. ...and boerewors, pap, chakalaka, durban style mutton curry, etc. For me, I put the egg topping on the meat for the last 15 minutes only. Not sure if I have to, just always did it that way.

I was born in S. Africa. Our family emigrated to the UK in 1957, but I have known bobotie all my life. We always had it with plain boiled long grain rice (not yellow), and always with sides of 1) chopped tomato and onion and 2) sliced banana sprinkled with lemon juice. I have a very old recipe book from Ouma Smuts which includes bobotie. My late maternal grandmother was (in her childhood) a neighbour of Jan Smuts in Irene. She once told me of one occasion being chased and whacked on the bottom by Field Marshal Smuts when she and some of her friends were caught scrumping apples from his orchard!

All I can say is wow, thank you so much for sharing this recipe. My colleagues and I are working in Sri Lanka clearing Landmines and unexploded ordnance. We are two Brits and two South Africans, we struggle to get good meat out here and when we do it often takes hours to eat it! I managed to find some fresh beef and with the help of my hand mincer I managed to cook up a Bobotie so good that both the SA guys said it was as good as mom's! We had to skip the W sauce and Bay leaf but it was still bloody awesome. Thanks again bru.

We sometimes substitute the sultanas for a banana (don't knock it until you've tried it). We layer the slices on top of the dish before pouring over the egg mix. The banana is a good sweetness substitute for sultana if you're not a fan of them. We also sometimes sprinkle over some flaked almonds as well.

Wow! What a beautiful recipe. You can see the blend of British, North African and Indian influences. On a totally unrelated subject have you ever made chili powder out of the varieties you grow? I leave some on the plant to ripen, pull the plant and sun-dry. After completely dry I grind in a spice grinder and sieve to get a uniform, fine powder. Some peppers yield interesting powders. Shishito powder is intensely sweet and fruity and can be blended with hotter varieties to tame them and add flavor.
@ChilliChump5 жыл бұрын
It is really tasty! With regards to powders, I do make them each year. Unfortunately I can't sub dry them, but I have a few other methods. This year I will be making some spice mixes with my dried peppers. I have a Cajun style spice video coming up soon in fact!

Then Slide it off the grill into a plate> fold it and slice it up! the flour tortilla act as a bigger noodle!
