Here is my review of the brand-new 2023 GSX-8S! It has some competition, but with the new Suzuki 776cc parallel twin engine on a 270-degree firing order it should be good, let's find out!

These kinds of bikes (parallel twin, middle weight), I'm so happy they exist and I get why they're so popular. Great in the city, great at motorway cruising, and just all round fun to hoon on. As an owner of an inline-4, I very much want to get a bike like this, something that's more usable in urban areas but still fun on these horrible Irish rural roads I live on lol

I didn't find any horrible Irish rural roads when I toured your glorious isle full of friendly locals and beautiful scenery. Loose mirror, bent gear changer and something else (can't remember). Rode/limped carefully back to Dublin. Phoned the 1st motorcycle repairer they gave me their address. I went there, they fixed her - no charge. Offered to buy everyone a drink - refused. Asked where the donation box/what charity and was basically shoved out the door with smiles. You hit the nail on the head. People confuse power and torque. You can have fun with less than you think. 200hp is too much IMHO. I have a 2004 triumph 955i st sprint with the uprated 118hp motor. It's more than I could ever use , and when you open the taps all the torque makes it feel like your hanging onto a wild horse. Torque turns wheels, power determines how fast it goes. Torque every time.
@bobbyblueace
@bobbyblueace Жыл бұрын
Power = Torque x Revs. You can't have one without the other.
@kleinbottled79
@kleinbottled79 Жыл бұрын
@@bobbyblueace Yup. Best example I've heard to explain this is a bicycle. If you weight 150lbs and you stand on the peddle away from a stop you are (briefly) producing about 150lb/ft of torque but likely peak out at less than 2 hp. You can't keep up good torque past a few dozen RPM. Put another way, power is just how much torque is at the wheel after you account for gearing. On a bicycle you have to start dividing down your torque very quickly to keep your RPM's under 80 or so. That's why they have a ton of gears like a diesel semi truck and a top cruising speed under 30mph. The peak torque figure is a poor predictor of performance. Electric motors for example. All that said. I prefer around 80-110hp in a bike. Much more than that and you don't get to wring it's neck enough imho. I like to twist the throttle fully open.
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket Жыл бұрын
Horsepower is a number generated from a formula, where torque is one factor of the formula. In other words, you remove torque and you cannot calculate horsepower. Anyway, a torque-rich engine is often more satisfying in most ways than the top-end-screamy-frantic-wailing-never-use-it-most-days kind of tuning. It is possible to have 400 horsepower and very little torque whatsoever, so long as you can rev something to 30,000 rpm. But that's not the sort of engine I care anything about.
@garymartin557
@garymartin557 Жыл бұрын
@@exothermal.sprocket the point i am trying to make is people mistake power and torque. If something has good low down grunt and gets going well they associate this as power when it is torque. I prefer the delivery low down and progress in a linear manner, rather than having to wait for all the power in a top end rush.
@exothermal.sprocket

@@garymartin557 I get what you mean. From a mechanical engineering perspective, a physics standpoint, I see holes in most explanations. But there has to be some practical explanation for the common person. Enthusiasm is great, but ignorance is too common.

This is possibly the best (IMO) of the current more budget friendly mid-sized bikes available. I don't normally watch review vids of bikes I'm not looking at getting, but when I saw you had gotten this it perked my interest. I love the blue, it is really quite a striking colour... I hope that Suzuki do a yellow version at somepoint too, the same yellow as the V-Strom... I bet that'd look pretty awesome as well. I still haven't ridden a bike with any form of quickshifter.... so I can't say if I'd like, or not like them... but I like riding bikes too... and part of that is working the clutch for me. I had a go on a Honda DCT thing a few years back and found it quite dull... I wonder if a quickshifter makes riding a manual bike half way closer to being dull? I already am able to do clutchless upshifts on all my bikes if I want, and can even do clutchless downshifting on my enduro bike when I want... never felt the need for an electronic device to do it all for me.... but happy to have my mind blown when I finally get round to riding a bike with an up and down blipper. Hahaha... Spicy the All Powerful... fixes brand new bikes and delivers kneeslider joy to Ducati owners! 😀

You are so lucky to be able to test ride various motorcycles! Where I live no dealers offer test rides. Unless they happen to have one you are interested in, you can't even sit on it until you buy it and then wait for a few weeks to months to get it. I'm pretty sure that way of doing business prevents them from selling nearly as many compared to if they did offer test rides. Even if it brings down the value of the bike a bit I think they would eventually make a lot more profit from selling more bikes. As it is, I am very interested in this bike but am extremely reluctant to buy it without riding one first. One reviewer said the seat is way too hard and needs more cushion. That bothers me greatly since a comfortable seat is extremely important to me.

Bikes with a good mid range are great, no need to wring its neck to get decent power.... With all the speed cameras around these days you need to be able to have fun at legal speeds. I am tempted to trade up to the 1000 and to have that super-naked performance up my sleeve. Bit hard to get a test ride. Our roads are similar to the UK. Less villages. What is your advice, the S1000 or the 8S??

Cool review. thanks Spicey.. Agree that the 700-800 range bike is the ideal real world bike. Why do the OEMs insist on making them cheap; no adjustment on the suspension, no hugger on the back wheel so road muck goes everywhere etc. In real world terms this is a big bike. Why not spec it nicely? The GSX S750 was more windy than other naked due to the tank shape. How does the wind on the 8S compare with the new GSX S1000?? Love to see a shoot off against the Honda and Yamaha and the old GSX S750 too!

I've been wanting to add a naked roadster to the stable, and the CB650R was leading my options mainly due to nostalgia for my old CB750 Nighthawk, but I have to admit the more I see of the GSX8S I'm starting to think it's the one I want. From someone who owned the cb650f(the gen 2 650, directly preceeding the R), don't buy the CB. The midrange is garbage. Sure, she screams like a proper i4, and sounds amazing with the stock exhaust while doing so, but you've got to rev it (8k+ rpm) all the time to get any zip. If you come out the corner with 5-6k rpm you get nothing and feel like you're waiting forever for it to start pulling. I really wished I'd got the MT07, because by all accounts, the engine is the opposite of the cb650. I think Suzuki have paid attention to the praise heaped on the MT07 engine and tried to emulate that but with more displacement and so even more midrange grunt. Do yourself a favour and forget about the CB.

Yeah, I'm leaning more and more to the GSX8S. My favorite is the white, but it may be a few years until I'm buying. With a little one on the way, if my next bike isn't a Ural my wife may not forgive me (she also rides). No confirmation that the Hornet is coming to the US at this time anyway (US Honda is annoyingly tight lipped about model releases until they magically show up on the website). At first I didn't like the look, but it's grown on me and like Spicy I now think it's by far the better looking bike, and most of the comparisons say that while it's not quite as snappy or wheelie happy as the Hornet, it feels more planted in corners and more comfortable overall while not really feeling any slower, so I think that would match my riding style well.

These days all the better priced exhausts are purely made to be cheap and loud. Not smooth silky tones with a hint of bass. I like to hear the tunes of my engine without involving others to the point of annoying them. I certainly don’t rev my engine at traffic lights. A little intake roar is nice too. The most perfect modern sound in my mind is the Honda Hornet 750, or for an example of a 4 cylinder, the latest version of Suzuki GSXS1000. Those are intoxicating. But not obnoxious. Simple ish Imo, it's to do with recent years. Torque is a lot more fun than horsepower, but people wanted top speed in the past, so loads of inline fours. But in 2023 what hope have you got on busy roads covered in cameras. The MT07 really pushed its way to biking culture and social media by being A2 restrictable (not a issue in the past) that means more young people will be riding them and posting tictoks and such more than the older riders. Add in cost of fuel, then many bike brands struggling, they then copying what was popular....and here we are "cheaper" more usable fun bikes more suited to 2023 and our current bike laws. That is my very VERY short version that only takes the UK in to account mostly.

@spicy110 Жыл бұрын
I am reviewing this bike as a road bike, not a track bike, the speed limit is 70mph at 70 you won't be using 6th, that is my point. Sure it is going to use 6th in the end but that is not what you do most of the time. I make real world reviews not top trumps reviews. 🙂
@calculatorade

Who said anything about track? Who rides a motorcycle (much less any sport bike) at speed limits? Who says gearing is too long at 70mph in 6th on a 2-cylinder 450lb naked bike with a top speed of 140+mph? You. That's who. Good review. Dumb statement about gearing. Dumb response about your dumb statement. Buy a KLX230 if you won't go over 70mph. If your goal is to "make real world reviews", be real.

So, as a first big bike for a late 40 something, over an SV650. Do you think this would be better?
@spicy110
@spicy110 Жыл бұрын
If you mean the newer SV650 it is quite a tame bike in comparison to this. They still have 75bhp but it isn't delivered in such a brutal way. If you can control your wrist either will be fine, but once you are more experienced I think you would want the -8. You can learn on both it's just the SV is a little more forgiving.

Go for the SV some cracking deals on new or nearly new, we all make mistakes sometimes but dropping a eight grand bike over a four grand Hurts twice as much. Vstrom 650 are good too with plenty of kit fitted, I've had one for 3 years, will get another one no problem😊

I was thinking about that price gap and I came to the conclusion of, If you really like the look of a bike that was 8k, would you not get it and get one you didn't like as much for 7k? @spicy110
@spicy110 Жыл бұрын
I reviewed the 750 a while ago, video is there for full info. As for a comparison going from my memory of the 750, they are quite alike in handling and that was a strong point of the 750. but clearly, the big difference is the engine, they make their power at different ends of the rev range. The parallel-twin of the -8 is the bottom end and the inline-four 750 is the top, it's just how different engines do. I don't think I could say what is "better" as they are both great and its more down to what the rider wants. Oh and if you mean are they stopping making the 750 no they have updated it I believe. 👍

Never thought i'd say this because its hasnt been the case the entire time i've been in the motorcycle scene but...the honda has more power then its competitors AND more tech thats insane to think about...like unless you absolutely HATE the way the hornet looks there isnt really an option to go with outside of the hornet. but with that being said...you have a parallel twin to choose from or, a parallel twin or...another parallel twin...Idk in this case the middle weight naked bike from japan kinda removes the choice out of the buyers hands in the "The honda is better everywhere" sorta way, i mean unless you're solely buying a bike on looks then the 8S all day. UNLESS you pay the BIG bucks and get a Euro bike. idk feels like the middle weight scene is kinda all the same even though it should have the most variaty given thats where a LOT of the consumer market seems to be right now
