Always interesting to imagine what marketing execs were thinking after viewing pitch reels like this. I'll say this much: Spidey was having one heck of a year creatively. The FOX animated series, a top-notch distillation of the wall-crawler's world (and what most of the merch in this vid seems geared to), was into its second season (and my personal favorite), "Neogenic Nightmare," which would bring characters like Blade, Morbius, Punisher, Kraven, and Vulture to the fore, and give us the troublesome visuals of a six-armed Peter Parker and a transformed animalistic Spider-Man taking the first part of his name all too literally. In the comics, the "Clone Saga" entered its second year; it was starting to wear out its welcome a bit with certain plot elements bordering on unbelievability (we're only two years away from "Maximum Clonage"), but Ben Reilly figuring out his role as the Scarlet Spider was sheer bliss, and the tight continuity gave me plenty of reason to hop between all five (or more depending on specials and one-shots coming out that month) of the Spider-Line's ongoing titles. The company was destined for bankruptcy the very next year, but you wouldn't know it from how fun Spider-Fans were having at this time.

When I worked at KB Toys a few years later, Spider-Man toys were still selling strong. KB must have had tons of Toy Biz stuff in warehouses they got at good prices so they had a high profit margin. Too bad they got hung up on selling crap kids didn't want anymore or not getting enough of what they did, or they might still be around. I think the name still has a small online presence. Online businesses like Amazon are not what really killed them. They were dying a slow death long before that.

Sometimes you forget Spider-Man was once Marvel’s marquee character and center of it all and they made sure of it. Not Iron Man or the Avengers; Spider-Man. His film rights being with Sony really diminished Marvel’s usage of him in marketing, huh?
