Why do modern video games consume 90% the VRAM at 1080p as they do at 4k? It's absolutely stupid.

I think it's because resolution is not what consumes most memory. It the base textures it's uses, resolution increases it further and raytracing beyond that. The reason there has been such a jump is because the consoles have around 12.5 - 13.5 vram available to them so that is the new baseline

High res textures doesn't exactly rely on resolution, you can use like 2-4k textures even on 1080p, whether you can spot the difference when not using high res monitor is different matter. Like others already mentioned the problem is Console now have more vram available to them compared to PC mainstream, as such ported titles will use higher textures as their base, can they optimized it more? Sure just like The Last Of Us, but it will take more time and cost more to develop and hence they just use it as it is probably to save cost.

The game currently runs into CPU bottlenecks in some scenes so that may be fixed in the future.

Wouldn't it be interesting to test the game with medium textures on 8GB GPUs? These results don't mean much to someone with an 8GB GPU since their performance will be very different from the test.

it will be completely fine tho on 8gb. on 4gb theres problem.. like low will look bad and medium will start killing framerate quite a lot, but textures look will look fine mostly.

​@ While I do agree that NVIDIA should have upgraded their 60 series cards to 12GB of VRAM, it's important to remember that the vast majority of gamers are still using 8GB cards. Games need to scale well across a wide range of hardware. If a developer can't offer a decent gaming experience for people with budget GPUs (like the RTX 4060 or RX 7600), their game won't sell well, and that’s bad for everyone.

Lowering settings just disables the rendering of fine details on far-away objects which should be a default optimization applied to all graphics presets. It just feels scummy to disable optimizations that make little to no difference to image quality to make older hardware obsolete such as what Silent Hill 2, stalker 2, and 2 Alan Wake 2 did and is being done again by these game companies that are in cahoots with Nvidia to make newer titles more demanding so that newer hardware would sell. It was always about making the game more accessible not more demanding and quite honestly we don't see a difference in image quality between games such as Doom Eternal and these newer titles so we aren't getting an insane graphical upgrade in return for these bonkers requirements *SMH*

The new 4080 Ti (5080) is really trash in terms of Performance, Vram, anyway you look at it, only beating 4080 super by 10fps. This should not be existing. Nvidia did not gave us 4090 performance at 999$, i am surprised they did that with the 4080 vs 3090 Ti.

If course my gpu is ready! Lol looks like a game thats actually optimized way better then many other titles lately. Pretty wild this title shows the 5090 capabilties even more. The gap from the 4090 to 5090 is larger then the 4080 to 4090. Not to shabby tbh.

@sortout1 naw I'm not even going for one. I'll enjoy my 4080 super for a while longer lol. I have no need or urge to get a 5000 series as of now. I literally only sim race well 99% of the time and none of the real sim racing titles need more then what I have. I dont have a single title besides the new ac evo that I can't get 100+fps in 4k maxed out on. So I'm fine for now.

@sortout1 maybe wait to see if a new card magically appears 😉 because over the next 6 months stock will be insanely low. Never know that magic sku we saw with 24gb may be a 5080ti/super. See people say the 5080 is the full sku but idk about that one. May be surprised! Thats what I'm doing. The 5080 on average is only 7%-12% better then the 4080 super. So just wait it out tbh.

TechPowerUp : why are you using TAA (temporal antialiasing) on a 30" 2560x1600 monitor ?!?!?!?! Using anykind of antialiasing technique on a resolution higher than 1080p using such small monitors is useless because it doesn't bring any kind of uplift in graphical fidelity due to the resolution being so high already and the pixel density farely small. All antialiasing brings is drop in performance. How do you as a tech site not know that ?!?!

2560x1600 at 30" the PPI is only about 100, AA is still very much needed at that low resolution and screen size, if it was at 4K then you could get away without using AA as the PPI would closer to 147, but even then you may as well run some AA at least on low. I game on a 43" monitor so 3840x2160 and the PPI at that res is only 102, AA is very much needed. In order for me to drop AA at this size, I'd have to run 8K.

@@richard-davies it's a preference....definitely not needed since you can sit around 40 cm away from which the jagged edges tend to become more smooth due to the distance at that resolution.
