One of the problems with these games that cause them to become movie games with horrible pacing is that you have "writers", and the "writers" are in constant conflict with the designers who are actually trying to make a game. The "writers" have a story to tell and they have to fit it inbetween the gameplay sections, and the more concessions the design has to make to this story the more disjointed the game becomes. This is why old games had so much better writing. Games with legitimately good stories like the original Ratchet & Clank, it actually was just written by some guys from the dev team. This meant that they could respect the structure of the gameplay and actually fit the story in where it made sense for the game to have it, and have the story actually enhance the gameplay instead of replace it. And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Games have very different needs from movies and TV, so when you bring in a "writer" with absolutely no games experience they try to tell a traditional story that doesn't fit the game where the focus is on the characters and not on the gameplay experience. Having an external writer on a game who is not in good communication with the design, is like having someone try to direct a movie entirely over the phone, it just becomes a mess.

You've summed up the conflict perfectly. The PS2 Ratchet and Clank games never interrupted the game with the story/writing (even though it was genuinely funny and compelling) because the people writing it were game devs themselves. They knew how to balance the two because they had an intrinsic understanding of how to do so and retain the player's interest. It was from the PS3 games onwards when the story became far more intrusive (and more poorly written funnily enough) that it was clear they were trying to be taken more seriously as storytellers and hired writers with little to no video game experience.

I’ve been playing Mafia II: Definitive Edition recently and I’ve had this same thought. While the game itself is buggy and gameplay isn’t the best, it has a solid story, great setting and good oldies soundtrack. The characters have good character development. There are no Mary Sues or brash female characters. The game is a depiction of mid 20th Century America when mobsters had power. The man who wrote the story also did Kingdom Come Deliverence, which the woke mob attacked because it didn’t have enough representation.

MJ PS4-5 is by far one of the worst love interests in video game history. She keeps complaining about how Peter treats her like she's fragile and has to pay the bills. What makes the 90’s Symbiote good is that Peter has always had those outbursts of anger, just usually at his breaking point, rather than normally. So when the symbiote makes Peter more aggressive, it feels a lot more natural to the audience as it’s not the first time pissed Peter appears.

I grew up with Venom basically being an antihero, and he was the symbiote that's bad trying to be good, and Carnage was meant to be the irredeemable must remove now villain. So when og Peter removes Venom because he was fighting crimes at night and feeding on his energy, it didn't really feel as compelling, especially when they wrote in that venom saw Peter as a friend and only did things it thought Peter would do. Meaning while 90's symbiote made Peter more aggressive, confident and stop his frustrations, which is refreshing for the audience as we always see him get beaten down but rarely fight back socially. But when the symbiote starts pushing away his friends and hurts people, we're like oh shit the symbiotes cool, but it definitely has to go.

Trend started in the early 2000s in mass and picked up steam early 2010s. It was done to pander and shoehorn for social and political trends as it hasn't really benefited comic sales at all. The only successful comic character who had they preference changed that was generally accepted in mass was Batwoman. The changes made to Black Cat, Iceman, Tim Drake, and etc who had decades of being in serious straight relationships that get changed in the most ridiculous ways is still not popular even years after they been done. Especially how it was done for Bobby and Tim was just insulting as well made them giant stereotypes of the insulting kind for said gay men... In the comic's he's helped the homeless, he's visited terminally ill children in the hospital, he saved a dog that fell out of a window, he is quite literally a man of the people. Granted i can see how these missions may not make for the most exciting gameplay as a gamer but these moments are things the character is known for and I would argue that they are a very important representation of the Spider-Man character.

He had his own struggles (and that struggles were mainly about the well-being of his dad, the great Jefferson Davis😂) without ruining Peter Parker’s character. Miles in Spider-Verse made Peter Parker feel better about himself and wants to be a hero again. Meanwhile, Miles in these games. They got rid of the tension that’s crucial to Miles’ struggle and character development in the first game by killing off Jefferson Davis. Jeff works better for the story by being alive than dead because Miles’ best relationship is with his parents and his uncle. Killing him off is just repeating the same plot beat as Uncle Ben. Peter Parker in the game also didn’t feel inspired or reinvigorated by Miles. Instead, Miles just made him feel shit about himself and want to retire, which is against the concept of Spider-Man which is to inspire people.

Kraven would be much batter as a stalker type enemy like OG Resident Evil 3 nemesis. You are minding your own business in the open world and then he ambushes you. Yeah when they initially announced the game and it was rumored Kraven would be one of the villains I immediately imagined him tracking you and randomly grabbing you mid-swing like Taskmaster did in the first game. But no, we get endless Kraven gang with tech that exceeds both Sable & Tinkerer combined. Hell, we didn't even get to fight Kraven without the Symbiote! That alone was disappointing

It's frustrating how this game constantly goes on and on about how Miles is so much "better" than Peter as Spider-Man, and Miles deserves to be The Spider-Man. It's so condescending and painfully clear they're only doing this because they desperately want to replace Peter and the title of Spider-Man with Miles. The idea pushed is that Peter never asked to be spiderman however miles did. Peter wanted to settle down and actually live his life. We see this by how he’s promising dates to MJ and trying to reconnect and go to rollercoasters with his best friend, you also see this with how he’s trying to abandon the role of spiderman so that he can work with Harry. Peter’s life is filled with so much loss, the contrast between Miles and Peter in this game is their directed anger. Miles blames others for his issues whereas Peter blames himself, we see this when we go into each others subconscious. Miles is greeted with hostile memories whereas Peter, despite having the thoughts that it would be better that the villains were killed, at the core of it all blamed himself for all the tragedy in his life. He blamed himself for his aunts death. Miles throughout the game is shown to be looking up to Peter, but being too scared to take that step. Miles started dropping his future for spiderman whereas Peter began dropping spiderman for his future. In essence it’s essentially, Peter is weighed down by all of his guilt whereas Miles was propelled by his anger. Miles already is a stronger spiderman based on his skill kit. When the two fought, venom/peter was fighting against his own will as well as the bell assisting in his defeat, not too mention this is straight after fighting Kraven. Miles had assistance. When they both fight Venom, peter absolutely put way more hands on a venom which was trying to infect him. Miles was trying to strictly survive in their fight. Isn’t the whole idea behind spiderman that ANYONE CAN WEAR THE MASK, quite literally said by the creator of marvel and spiderman himself, his very own words lol. Peter isn’t replaceable as he will always be Peter however there’s more to Peter than spiderman, which the whole “I NEED this suit” fight is about…

She felt useless for so long, and has been given an opportunity to prove herself. The biggest sin outside of all the woke stuff is how the writers horribly treat Peter in this game, not only has he been drastically nerfed but he’s always apologizing for everything even when it’s not his fault like the symbiote’s influence over him. (Nice showing him some empathy there MJ btw) But the worst example of all is that if you add up all the times he gets saved in this game it is SEVEN times in total, how does Peter who had been Spider-Man for eight years mind you get saved that many times as he’s supposed to be the veteran of the pair. (Contrast that with Miles, who only needed to be saved at least three times in the game) There are five of those several instances where he could have been able to get himself out of danger without much trouble as for instance during the Flame storyline, Peter should have been able to lift that train off himself before the fire got to him. All this tells me is that Peter is either gonna retire permanently by the end of Spider-Man 3 or they’ll just kill him off, when even diehard Miles Morales fans can see how badly Peter was done in this game and take issue with it then that is when you know that you’ve screwed up.

As for the pigeon quest, Howard is a character that has been in the Spider-Man. Universe and continuity for a long time? He's also one of the characters in the comics that helped Peter get over is depression from losing Ben. So he's not a new character, and he's kind of played an important role in Peters journey, so the idea of having him die is actually quite sad. If you don't know too much about the continuity that makes sense. It's a thing
