Fun story: When I went to see the movie at the theater, they accidentally played it with the wrong dub. After about 30 minutes of the audience shouting in frustration, the theater staff apologized, restarted the movie from the beginning, and offered everyone a free ticket for any future movie of their choice. I used my free ticket to watch the same movie again.

I'm still convinced this "canon event" thing isn't real, or nearly as important as portrayed, and Miguel is either misinterpreting what happened, or was duped, and was only saved from the ravages of that universe collapsing BECAUSE he didn't belong.

I think by replacing himself, no action was taken to investigate his death, which led to that universe collider incident not being stopped in time, which led to collapse. You can see it in Phavitrs dimension, it’s not the officer who is the cause of sinkhole, it’s the collider.

Also, he's an hypocrite : he calls Miles "the original anomaly", when in actuallity, HE is ! It's HIS transdimensional experiments that collapsed that dimension, HE's the one that's been tampering with all the other Spidermen's dimensions, priming them up for non-canon interventions, HE is calling the shots, and then complaining about them being taken ! Sure, the super Collideintron from Miles' dimension did some more damage, but it all started with HIM...
@rob.3143
@rob.3143 5 ай бұрын
It might even go one step further; perhaps his messing with canon events in a dimension is what destabilised the spiderverse to where it is now. With all the different versions there are, I do not find it likely none of them ever found a workaround to an issue that was considered a canon event. The avoiding thereof might even what made some of them possible to exist in the first place. But Miguel, I think, said he kept interfering with those moments and I believe he broke too many which put a strain on the spiderverse as a whole. The holographic display does show that the breaking of these events would affect every universe, not just the one it occurs in.

I think the slower part towards the beginning with Miles, his parents, and Gwen deserve so much love. For one, the scene where Miles is invisible and basically looking Gwen in the face as she says she’ll never see Miles again, reminded me so much of the moment in A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey one). Doug, you know what I’m talking about because the way you talk about that scene always stuck with me. The hanging upside down scene with Miles and Gwen is beautiful and perfect. 10/10 moment. And the scenes with Miles talking with his mom make me emotional every time as someone who’s mom has died. And that’s the part of the movie that people think is the weakest.

I absolutely love the Spot because he’s the first “scientist turned into a monster during experiment gone wrong” character who actually ACTS like a scientist. He’s constantly experimenting and picking apart the broader applications of his powers over the course of the movie. And unlike every other supervillain (who usually just tolerates having a kryptonite) when he realises he can run out of holes, he quickly brainstorms a way to get rid of the weakness by recreating the accident that transformed him on a much larger scale. He's far from the joke everyone sees him as.

23:40 A fun fact about this part: originally the cliffhanger was a little earlier, it was going to be when Prowler Miles puts his fist next to "our" Miles, and then end abruptly there. But when they showed this ending to test audiences, they apparently "got very angry", thus the decision to show Gwen gathering her team, and Miles ripping the glove, got added during the last few months of production to make the cliffhanger more hopeful. That's why during that scene they show the death of Gwen's father from the Amazing Spider Man movies, or why Gwen feared for the death of her father who's a cop, and why him quiting was her realizing their fate wasn't written in stone (nor in canon events).

In a livestreamed interview, Josh Keaton had a theory that Captain Stacy died at some point after the original series ended, and that his death is what would've led to Peter joining up with Miguel and his Spider-Society. Miguel would've told Peter about the Spider-Man Canon Events and that all the tragedies he's suffered throughout his life were part of some greater purpose. After losing another father figure in his life, Josh believed that a young and impressionable Spider-Man would've believed anything to make himself feel better and started looking up to Miguel O'Hara as his new mentor. Honestly, that theory just makes me think Spider-Society really is a cult.

One of the biggest reasons why you're able to follow the action SO well is because the team utilized a stylization technique done by another director you might know, Wes Anderson; that is, all of the important information of any given scene is kept at the center of the screen so your eye doesn't lose focus. He's by no means the one to pioneer this, afaik, but he is the one that popularized and refined it, and that filming ethos bleeds into this film so unabashedly. Whereas Wes Anderson uses the negative space of a scene for building atmosphere and capturing a mood, almost like a painting or a picture, Across the Spider-Verse uses that empty space to its fullest potential at the film's highest moments, making sure that the main character is center frame, while everyone not in focus heads to the side; they treat each frame like a panel of a comic book. Then later flips back to traditional shots when the film slows down...and even then, most of its still centered. It's how they can fill every frame with so much information, while still being coherent. Try it next time you're watching the film (this isn't just for Doug, you at home can try this too), REALLY concentrate on how much your eyes are moving throughout. You could probably count on one hand the amount of times you'll be looking either to the left or the right. As you said, it really is an absolutely amazing use of layout and composition, and was clearly done by someone who's a master of cinematography.

One of the many things that I find so satisfying about how the Spiderverse movies have been written is that so much of what was written (in terms of themes for characters) in the first movie pays off in the second movie. When Miles and Peter interact for the first time the color pallet from his Spider-sense shifts from green and purple (the Prowler's colors) to red and blue (Spiderman's colors) this insignificant detail at the time becomes an intracule part of Across The Spiderverse where Miles and by extension the audience finds out that he wasn't supposed to be Spiderman- he was supposed to be the Prowler which is mind blowing because it was all there, Miles' Theme (in the soundtrack) is the Prowler's theme in revers. All of this is RIGHT there for us pick apart and is crafted in a way that when you find out about all of these things it just clicks together. You just don't see this type of writing anymore when it comes to entertainment. Very rarely do writers set these small things up that pay off later on- usually they'll just forget about it and when asked just go "haha yea I forgot about it, originally we were gonna do this but it got cut and we just left it, my bad!" but Spiderverse doesn't do that every detail has a reason for being and it's why I love this movie so much.

I have a theory, I think the reason it's so easy to follow everything is a) the character colors always deviate them from the background, making it easier to find them and b) because the actions is always in the center of the frame. Fury Road did something similar where every action beat begins in the same location on the screen as where the last one left off. Here, if you simply stared at the center of the screen, you'd be able to see the focal point of the action. This gives you brain more time to go over the finer details because you're not scouring the frame to find said focal point.

Something interesting that I read is that what makes Miguel wrong in this situation isn’t because he’s a jerk about it or that he’s lying. It’s because he is unknowingly making the same mistake that Spider-Man made in the very beginning, he’s letting something bad happen without doing anything about it, just like Peter Parker originally did when he could have stopped the criminal who was gonna be responsible for uncle Ben’s death. This is what Miguel doesn’t realize that no spider man would consciously make if they knew it would happen, canon event or not.

Dougs canon events in multiverse are Bat Credit Car, Cat in the Hat, Son of the Mask, North, Freddy Got Fingered, Doug show, etc Here are some other fun facts you might have missed 1. The Spot was not originally the film's main antagonist, being dismissed at first by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller when producer Avi Arad suggested using him, but this changed after the potential of his powers was discussed. Yes that Avi Arad the man who ruined both Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 2. The film's majn poster itself is foreshadowing those who will remain loyal to Miguel are on the left while those who will rebel to join Miles are on the right. 3. The Spider-Society only gives Miles a day pass to stop him from glitching. The only other person with a day pass is Mayday Peter B.'s toddler daughter Peter B. even says he "didn't know they made that for adults." 4. Earth-13122 the Lego universe is the same universe from Lego Marvel Super Heroes (2013) and Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 (2017). 5. The fifth Sony film nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, after Surf's Up (2007), The Pirates! Band of Misfits (2012), Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) only Into the Spider-Verse has won. 6. The Spider-Sense reverb from the first film occurs between Miles and Spider-Byte and is noticeably the only instance that this happens between Miles and another member of the Spider-Society. This hints at her defection to Gwen's team after Miguel exiles her in the film's ending. 7. At run time of 1 hour Jessica Drew tells Miles that he has 1 hour to fix the problem he caused (within the plot). Credits roll 1 hour 10 minutes after this dialogue occurs. 8. The classic Spidey web pattern briefly appears when Miguel unmasks himself. 9. In theatre release there are actually two different versions that were released. The differences don't include differences in major plot points rather subtle animation differences and dialogue differences. 10. Spider-Punk is an alternative universe mixture of both Spider-Man and the original Prowler. The original Hobie Brown was the first Prowler a petty thief turned hero after being redeemed by Spider-Man. Aaron Davis would become the Prowler of the Ultimate Marvel Universe in 2011. 11. The Marvel Database wiki gave the Sony's Spider-Man Universe the unofficial placeholder universe designation of Earth-TRN688. In this film the SSU is given the designation of Earth-688. 12. Things you can see in Miles's room on Earth-42 that aren't in Earth 1610 A design of the prowler's glove next to Miles drawing board, a book on free climbing on the book shelf, a speed bag next to the door and a Muy Thai trophy in the hall

I personally would’ve preferred it ending on the shot where prowler hits “miles” (the bag) and cuts straight to black, leaving audiences guessing whether or not he survived. One thing I really like (among many, admittedly) is that for all their differences both the Spot and Miguel are basically coming at Miles with the same complaint: "These are the rules of a Spider-Man film, why aren't you sticking to them?" Miguel has his 'canon', the rules by which every adaption of Spider-Man has clung to, which audiences were getting tired of even when we were only on the Andrew Garfield films. And when Spot says he should be Miles' nemesis because of how connected they are he'd be absolutely right in literally any other Spider-Man film, which all bent over backwards to connect Doc Ock, Sandman, Lizard, Electro to Spidey (hell even in the original comics the reveal of Norman Osbourne as Green Goblin was divisive amongst the writers because it was yet another villain who had some personal connection to Peter). The Spider-Verse films aren't just stories that happen to have Spider-Man in them, they're stories *about* Spider-Man, its why they work so well

One I picked up on is when Miles and his parents are with the guidance counsellor, Rio snaps her fingers so he pays attention and not only is the motion of the snap done like a comic book style, but if you pause the film, the lines make up the flag of Puerto Rico, a nod to his heritage. Also Spiderpunk's animation frame rate differs from the other characters, with poses changing every third frame and each separate element of him, his jacket, his guitar, having their own different frame rate. This makes sense because as Hobie says, he hates consistency.

Another Fun Fact: The film's production was allegedly plagued by poor working conditions for the animators. Vulture reported that approximately 100 staff members quit over the course of production due to the crunch culture. Animated films are known to both take a long time to produce and be subject to extensive reworking, the former is usually done before any animation is started. However, the people Vulture talked to alleged that story and art changes were ordered by Phil Lord after scenes were completed. Although the film was ostensibly delayed out of its original spring 2022 release due to COVID-19, animators who were hired in the first quarter of 2021 allegedly sat around for six months or so with nothing to do while the story was being tweaked. In order to make up for lost time, some animators were working up to 11 hours a day. Allegedly the ending where Gwen gets the gang back together to rescue Miles was changed a mere six weeks before release. While Beyond was also ostensibly delayed due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes, it had been rumored long before the delay was officially announced that one was coming to avoid another situation like this.

Something I find simultaneously brilliant and frustrating is how Miguel doesn't understand why his world fell apart and how he DIDN'T break a Canon Event to do it. The Canon Event he thinks he broke was the death of that universe's version of himself... but that isn't the case at all. The other him's death still happened. It's the fact Miguel got careless and something specific he did in that universe is what destroyed it. In fact, deep down, I wouldn't be surprised if he knows this, but, the grief of losing all he cared about and the guilt of knowing he's the cause of it made him go into denial and he's using the Canon Events to justify himself and hide from the guilt, to the point he's convinced himself he was and never is in the wrong. Also, I love that, for the Lego Spider-Man universe, they just reused the audio from the first Tobey Maguire movie when it came to Jonah😂 And Spot blaming Miles for his becoming Spot is just ignoring his own blame. HE'S the one who chose to get some extra dark matter when it was obvious to everyone else to get out once the Spiders started fighting the villains. Spot caused all his own problems and just wants to blame Miles because that's easier

Funnily enough, a while back I watched a video from over a year ago that actually explains how Spectacular in Spiderverse could happen WITHOUT ruining Spectacular. In AEMH (Earth's Mightiest Heroes the Avengers) it was originally planned that that show's Spider-Man, who first appeared in season 2, was supposed to be the same as Spectacular, but, when Disney gave the order for Spectacular to be cancelled, without telling anyone, they got Ultimate Spider-Man's VA to redo the lines for a kind of other show advertisement. And the video I mentioned, Pillar of Garbage, explained how both could still be Spectacular and EMHA Spectacular without it ruining either continuity. They ARE the same Peter in a way, just that EMHA's Peter experienced NEAR identical events, but slightly different due to EMHA's world having several clear differences, The Vault being a key example. What does this mean? EMHA's Spider-Man is the one we see in Spiderverse. He just looks like Spectacular Spider-Man's design because it's who was was originally planned to be and travelling between Earths gives him this odd effect. It's not the best solution, but it's something better than ruining Spectacular's character as a whole, right?

Personally, my theory about Miles's Dad, canon events, etc., is that Miguel is _just plain wrong_ about the causal link between averted canon events and universal collapse. Sure, he believes that his presence in that alternate universe, replacing a version of him that died so he could enjoy a family, caused the universe to collapse, but (a) what canon event did he disrupt? (The guy is dead, and we don't see any consequences from his death that lead anywhere that his presence averted.) and (b) this is happening right around the time that Steven Strange is chasing a Dreamwalker across dimensions to prevent the Dreamwalker from collapsing them. I'd give at least even odds that the dimensional collapse was a third party causing it, and Miguel just got unlucky. Secondly, the hole in reality that the Spider Squad shows up to seal in Mumbattan is very clearly caused by the Spot. The hole is right where he dropped a rift-corrupted building through the floor of the city. It's just the rift he tore open getting wider. It would be doing that whether Miles saved Indian Spidey's father-in-law-to-be or not. All of Miguel's evidence for his theory is coincidental, circumstantial, and I strongly suspect cherry-picked. He looks for "canon event disruptions" to blame when he notices a hole in reality, rather than successfully using canon event disruptions to _predict_ holes in reality. And I think that realization is what is going to save Miles's Dad in terms of the alleged Gordian Knot of "the canon." I think fighting for that realization is going to be what the movie pivots on.

This is mostly coming from a Film Theory video, but I see a pretty big hole in Miguel’s logic…he’s trying to stop the breaking of canon, because when he did it, it destroyed the universe he was in…but what he did was replace a version of himself who had died so he could have a family and a happy life, inserting himself into a word where Miguel O'Hara was supposed to be dead. It looks like he’s on the right track when Miles saves Police Inspector Singh and the world starts to collapse, but the world only started to collapse AFTER Miles did that one specific action, however, when we look at miles as Spider-Man, the logic becomes a little hazy… one of Miguel’s “canon events” is that someone becomes Spider-Man, and if the canon is broken then the world is destroyed. We know that the earth 42 spider was supposed to bite Miles 42, but it didn’t…and that world is still there, it’s gone to shit, but the world itself still exists, and Miles’ world seems to be self-correcting around him. The way I think it works, is that what Miguel calls Canon Events are actually Incursions, but they’re surprisingly easy to prevent…as long as the Spider who is NATIVE TO THE UNIVERSE IN QUESTION is the one that breaks the canon, everything will be fine. A recurring line in this movie is “I can do both” (save one important person and the bystanders)…I think the lesson of the next move will be something like “you can’t do both…not without help”

Something I love about the spiderverse movies are that they EARNED the pg rating. Nowadays, most kids movies get a pg rating for little to no reason even if they are much tamer than the g rated kids films of yesteryear. For example, Hunchback Of Notre Dame has themes of lust, racism, a scene where the villain tries to murder a baby in the first 10 minutes after killing the babies mother, a song where the villain sings about how he doesn't want to go to hell for his lust towards someone, genocide, etc. And that movie got a g rating. Madagascar has Marty say sugar honey iced tea, and it gets a pg rating. However, just like Puss In Boots 2, the spiderverse movies actually earn the rating due to more mature content. I love how the spiderverse movies are taking risks to evolve animated movies.

So Spider-Verse 2 being a movie that was written to set up the next movie instead of telling its own story is (as a result) a major source of frustration for me.

There was always going to be a cliffhanger, though. Originally this was titled as a "part 1" until the second part was retitled to Beyond the Spider-verse.

Random detail that a lot of people I have spoke to seem to miss - Gwen’s story is running parallel to Miles’. They’re both trying to save their dad. “A police captain close to Spider-Man has to die”. Gwen abandoned her home in an attempt to keep him safe, since no Spider-Man means no need to die. This was one of the reasons why she was so desperate to keep Miguel happy, follow the system, and got frustrated at Miles’ attempts to change things…if she got sent home with no way to leave, then her dad would die. I saw some people call her a brat for risking her friendship with Miles just to “avoid talking to her dad” when she believed that following the system was the only way to save him. It’s one of the reasons she’s so quick to change sides after her dad steps down as police captain, because she saw for the first time that going off story is possible, and that the system doesn’t have to play out the way Miguel thinks it does. That maybe Miles was actually right and isn’t risking destroying everything

Great review, Loved the movie Also, but missed a bit spotlight on the work conditions for the animators, Phil Lord and many other directors on these animations projects can’t decide things based on simple drawings like a pre vis, so the animators Can have made a couple of minutes of the movie complete done with all work and get asked to change it all because the director wanted too add a Giant new change storywise or camera. So massive respect to the animators for working under these conditions.

I'm sorry to hear about the Studio Doug. You only just got it back up and running, and you're back to square one again. I hope you and the gang find a new studio to film in soon. Also, Across the Spiderverse rules, man :)

I'm a little surprised that Doug didn't make the connection between symbolism behind the two cakes and the main driving force in the climax of the film: Miles initially gets told that he can't have his cake and eat it, too, and answers with "Unless you buy two cakes." He then gets two cakes for his dad and ends up ruining both. Later in the film, Miles is told that his father has to die to save the multiverse. He then claims that he can save his dad AND the multiverse at the same time, once again attempting to have his cake and eat it, too, in a way.

Is anyone else hoping that WB gets their act together and lets that possible animated Batman Beyond movie happen? The one that was pitched by one of the animation leads for these Spider-Verse movies? Because golly, it's a PERFECT opportunity. Visually because the artstyle goes so well with Terrys suit and every other aspect about Neo Gotham, and if you're looking for a big box office, people have been begging for years and years to get one of these meaning many opportunities for his world to catch up with ours. The theatres would flood. If James Gunn thinks otherwise, he's nuts.

I will say I prefer the first one because it feels like a complete story. My biggest gripe with across the spiderverse is that it feels like the middle movie setting up a sequel vs being a full movie that has more to follow. With that said i think once the third one comes out 2 and 3 together will be my favorite and one will just be the cool jumping off point that showed what was possible.

I have watched Across The Spider-Verse like 10 times already. It is one of my favorite movies ever and when part 3 comes out, no one is going to care about the cliffhanger. I don’t think there is a way they could have made this self-contained without basically cutting out the first half of the movie and literally having the Miles following Gwen into the Indian Spider-Man dimension be the first scene in the movie

They actually teased the twist of the spider not being from Miles' dimension back in the first movie. The spider was glitching just like the other spider-people were because they weren't in the proper dimension. That realization hit me like a bus and I love that what seems to be minor details turn out to have huge impacts. I just freaking love these Spider-Verse movies.

Another Fun Fact: The film's opening recap/Previously on segment with Gwen giving a short recounting of the events of Into the Spider-Verse has a few shots of upcoming scenes from the film itself, lacking context, but still containing thematic relevance to her voiceover, such as Captain Stacy trying to arrest Gwen when she says that Miles isn't the only one who "hasn't had it easy" and Miles' betrayed reactions towards Gwen once the truth about Canon Events and his anomalous existence as Spider-Man is revealed to him, as Gwen brokenly says she "didn't want to hurt him". Gwen's dialogue also hints at the film's ending, with her repeated line "And he's not the only one" foreshadowing that Miles will meet another version of himself, and her line about how she thought she "knew the rest but (she) didn't" referring to how Gwen learns that Canon Events can be averted without the destruction of a dimension from her father quitting the force. Likewise, her first lines about "doing things differently this time" set up Gwen's new stance at the film's ending and decision to turn against the Spider-Society and its views with her own allies. Turns out this is actually the speech she's using to recruit people.
