I love how we spend 45 mins talking about the Shathra plot which is roughly 4 issues, then nearly another further 45 mins on 1 issue where Peter and MJ just talk like adults and we have a fun comic book team up sprinkled in (to be fair I have always loved this issue too)

Another reason why this is so seminal is like... it's the last Amazing Spider-Man run. Of course there's been like 400 issues since then, but as we all know, OMD broke things. If you were to read every issue of ASM up until this run, it would be one complete continuity. It might not always fully jive, but at least the universe itself didn't change and alter past stories. And then after JMS, it feels like we basically start from 0 for each run. Slott got to play in the sandbox for awhile, but Spencer reset things, and the Wells did it again. Things stick around, but it feels like continuity has become looser, and because of that, everything matters less. This isn't necessarily exclusive to Spider-Man (as comics themselves have changed a ton over the past couple decades), but OMD was such a dramatic event with a significant "Before" and "After" that it makes him the best example
@Jameskoek
@Jameskoek 2 күн бұрын
You know I've never thought about it like this, but you're not wrong. I personally Loved Slott's entire run, and Spencer's was Amazing "pun intended". Spider-man 616's problem in recent years is Marvel not wanting it the have a long history, and constant soft resets that take the kick out of multiple runs bleeding into each other like they used to. Arguably DC was doing the same too, given they would go into new 52 very soon. Mid 2000s was a weird time for comics looking back on it.

I think one of the reasons why this still resonates with me is that this feels like the final era where Peter was allowed to grow and change, for better or worse, but it does feel like there is real progression. Dan Slott did some good stuff after this, but it really felt like when he was done he just put his toys back in the box. JMS felt like he wanted to contribute to an actual narrative.

@mikhaelgribkov4117 2 күн бұрын
So he nuked it and made pitch for Sins Pasts. Every writer tries to contribute and everyone will try to put stuff for next writer, but I think there's this weird narrative around JMS being anything special, when all was leading to One More Day already and considering Slott time was way longer and had own stuff with editorial for years, he ended on better note.
@jameskingman1227
@jameskingman1227 2 күн бұрын
@@mikhaelgribkov4117 to be fair, by the time of sins past he was getting a lot of editorial meddling in his stories. I don’t agree with the sins past story, but after rereading it, it holds up as an actual story, it would have also been better if they were Peters kids and not Norman’s as originally intended (not that I want that either). But again at least you can say that even in that story there is character progression and JMS was flat out made to write One More Day, even to the point of he didn’t write the final issue.

I like JMS' Shathra SO MUCH more than the stupid, mustache-twirling retconned version from Spiderverse. I'm so sick of "corruptor" villains in general (it doesn't help that we've had so many the last couple of years with the constant abuse of the Symbiotes and Knull). The way she speaks and behaves just feels so distinct and alien-like which complements her origin as a creature from the Astral Plane who's not supposed to be on the material plane. She also mirrors the conflict between Ezekiel's and Pete's argument about where Pete derrives his powers in a similar way to Morlun, where she treats Pete as a Spider totem which he is not and he knows it. Also, the interactions between a primitive, astral predator who goads Spider-Man into becoming more violent and spider-like and ditching the "man" and Pete are fun to read. I also loved how in her first story Shathra didn't have a distinct and consistent appearance, which adds to her origin as a predator from the Astral Plane - she goes from a slick, ink-black humanoid when she's playing with her food, to a human when she's goading Pete to embrace being the Spider totem which she's come to the material plane to hunt, to some kind of beastly, insectoid creature when she herself begins embracing her essence as the spider wasp to Spider-Man's spider. When Shathra ditches her intelligence and commits to a hunt, she loses humanoid body parts and begins subtly changing shape into a more insectoid, wasp-like shape, adopting new, insectoid body parts. She loses all of that in all of her subsequent appearances the same way how additional lore and background hurt Morlun as well. It's this irony where I want JMS' original villains like Morlun, Shade, Digger, Shathra, etc. to be used more, but every time they ARE used more those subsequent appearances only actively make those characters much worse :D
@mikhaelgribkov4117
@mikhaelgribkov4117 2 күн бұрын
Didn't Shade just simply die? And a thing with JMS villains is that no one wants to deal with esoteric spider-totem stuff, except for Dan, it seems. Which is sad, because I do agree that concepts like Shathra are fun, but you clearly see even around JMS time that other writers could care less for it and before Spider-verse she was killed in Scarlet Spider book.

@@mikhaelgribkov4117 Yeah, you're right. Too bad there's no way to use dead characters in comic books. I know others have already said it in the comments here, but it bears repeating: this run FEELS (retroactively) like the last actual run on Spider-Man. I hate the direction that Marvel (and comics in general) has gone in the past 15+ years. When every run on a character ends with things back at status quo and no real character development, the universe starts to feel less real and interesting. OMD legitimately ruined Marvel Comics in my eyes. The whole multiverse collapsed, and Marvel refused to reboot because it didn't want to invalidate all those previous stories... but they'll do it with Spider-Man specifically because they clearly don't understand what a loving marriage is like and how interesting it really is.

1:13:10 best quote to summarise the current 616 Spiderman Dilemma. And in my opinion, i think Batman doesnt have that problem weirdly.
@velemamba260
@velemamba260 3 күн бұрын
I think Batman doesn't have that problem because he's at a different stage of life to Peter. The stage of life the writers seem to want Peter to go back to is one that I think is inherently transitory. They want him to be in that uncertain mid-point of life when people are still trying to figure their lives out and become who they're going to be. The problem with that is that for a really long time he was out of that stage and we saw who he would eventually be. So now he's rolled back into being less mature while the characters around him, who grew up with him, were able to stay in that more grown up stage. Now with Batman, he was always mature. The difference between him with development and him without it aren't as pronounced. The writers want him to be essentially an eternal 30-something, and fundamentally, while people definitely still can change and develop after 30, the difference just won't be as stark as it could be after they've been developing since they were 20.
