Year 6 of Spider-Man. I think I can start bringing up flaws in Stan Lee's writing. Based on ASM #50-71.
Was gonna originally call the video Foswell, Kingpin and The End of Silver Age but nobody's gonna click on Foswell so I changed it to Stan Lee. Then I wanted to title the video "Stan Lee's WORST writing traits" or something like that but it felt too clickbaity.
00:00 Intro
00:35 Foswell
05:37 Kingpin
08:53 Stan Lee
13:27 And The End of Silver Age
Music from KZbin Audio Library:
The World's Fair - Godmore
Outreach - Go By Ocean - Ryan McCaffrey
Take Me Down To The Fashion Show - NoMBe
Orient - SefChoi
State Drive - VYEN
Savior - Telecasted

I've been thinking of doing my own spider-man retrospective and what you said about Foswell made me reconsider how I view that whole arc. When I was reading it, I thought the spider-man no more arc (issues 50-52) and Foswell's death were really great when I read them, but you're right, it was really rushed. I also think it's very interesting that Ditko kept creating morally grey characters (i.e. Peter, JJJ, Foswell) when his ideology championed a very black and white view of things

Ditko didn't became the main plotter until issue 26, Ditko made clear that issues 1-25 were a Lee-Ditko equal collaboration.

I had to cut the part that spoke about it but I have to mention it somewhere. The cover for #67? One of the best covers I've seen. One of my favorite issues and some of the best Spider-Man art. #66 and #67 might be my favorite Mysterio story. Loved it.

Great video as always. Personally i feel Lee's style is understandable if we analyze how superhero comic books were before Marvel. Silver Age DC had far less continuity than Silver Age Marvel and when they did storylines in their books, they usually were really generic in comparison to Marvel Storylines, with the writing being mostly flat and the art being more conformist and less experimental than Marvel. As such, because of how different Marvel was in comparison to DC, it sometimes led to Lee trying to explain things he feared both old and new readers might be confused about, as DC stories were so simple they didn't need any explanation at all. I think that's why Lee put that arrow with text on that scene where mysterio is on the sewer, he feared Romita's visual language might confuse the readership, specially new readers, as Lee always believed that every single comic book should give a good first impression, "Every Comic Book is someone's first issue" he used to say, which meant he tried to please both old readers and new readers at the same time.

Stan to me has always been a mix bad of a writer. When his stuff is good, it's REAL good but when his flaws as a writer pop up those specific stories tend to go towards the lower quality side. Still a great read and well worth reading mind you. A low quality Stan Lee written story is still a fun read regardless, even if the flaws are more noticeable.

I keep hearing the misinformation that Norman Osborn murdered Stromm. He fully intended to, but Spidey pushed Stromm out of they way. Stromm then immediately had a convenient heart attack and (supposedly) died, although he returned years later as a cyborg. That plot point is critical to Spidey letting Osborn go free when he got amnesia, because he thought to himself "he hasn't really harmed anyone".

I honestly think Gerry Conway's run on Spider-Man was a more well-written run. Granted, we had more memorable classics when Ditko was still drawing the book.

5:57 Great storytelling with the Sinister Six. Ock's metal arm lifting off the table after he bangs it on the table ("Attention!") is brilliant!

Some of the critiques about when to reveal surprises/things teased over time might be part of the problem with the marvel method of writing. Because Stan is coming in after his basic pitch the artist and adding in text bubbles. There probably needed to be better collaboration between Stan and Romita for some of those specific moments.

It's hardly surprising that a middle aged (46) white guy was struggling to produce material relevant to his audience. It's amazing that his success rate was as high as it was. You can see the same problems with Jack Kirby's later works; it's still good but there are a few dead ends and loose threads. Unfortunately, everyone gets old and slightly out of touch...

From what I've read of the late '60s Spider-Man issues with Jim Mooney inking John Romita, they read much better than Stan Lee's writing on Fantastic Four.

What about the long standing fan war that Stan didn't write or barely wrote the Spider-Man comics? If you think Stan's run is bad, blame the artists who supposedly did most of the "writing." Far too many coincidences in Peter's life that link to Spider-Man's.

Wrong. Romita in an interview about how it was plotting with Stan: "We would have a verbal plot together. First it was two or three hours, then it was an hour. Stan would tell me who he would like to be the villain, and personal life "threads" he would like carried on" and later on another interview he gave more details on it, saying "If Stan weren’t such a histrionic character, I probably would have fallen asleep right there, but he kept me awake because he was really jumping all over the office. He was using different voices, shouting, screaming, running down the hall - he really did all those crazy things".

@@RodrigoGarcia-ze5em I'm not saying I believe that. Kirby & Ditko had sometimes said Stan did nothing at all which I find hard to believe. Maybe he trusted those guys more than a Romita or others. Didn't Ditko write solo for his last few issues? I don't get how Kirby could work with Stan so long if Stan was calling himself the writer falsely.

Honestly I think 94 Spider-Man is more faithful to the Lee-Ditko-Romita era than Spectacular ever was in the latter it was only in glimpses but for the most part it feels more like the hated Brand New Day run. And before you start complaining both Liz and Mark Allan are toned down versions of Michelle and Vin Gonzales right down to being hispanic and having similar unlikeable deceptive traits that both the Gonzales siblings had in the comics. It doesn't help that the characters in Spectacular were either unlikable or underdeveloped for how little Liz Allan herself appeared in the 94 version she was still a more mature and far more likable version of the character. To say that 94 Spider-Man has aged poorly is an insult as it's aged far better than the 92 X-Men that aired before it especially compared to their final seasons I will always prefer Spider-Man TAS which was far more hopeful.
