A Gwen Stacy Character Study

Gwen Stacy (the 616 version specifically) has always been a perplexing character to me. I genuinely have never known how to feel about her. I like her certainly but I couldn't tell you much about her when compared to other Spider-Man side characters and love interests. When she gets adapted, I can definitively say she's one of the best characters in the case of the Amazing films and Spectacular.

Na I disagree. The relationship between Gwen and Peter had way more depth and it was obvious that Stan Lee intended for Gwen to be his soulmate. Mary Jane just became his love interest because of fan demands, but when you think about it, was that really a good choice? I mean the two don’t really have that much in common. I think they should’ve kept Gwen alive honestly.

People saying Modern Gwens are just taking from MJ to flesh her out are just MJ fans trying to push the PeterMJ soulmates agenda. Personally my perfect MJ would be something like the modern mixed with the classic. I love her wholesome moments with Peter and when she sticks up for him. She just didn’t get a lot of focus like tons of superhero love interests back in the day.

I think that the best version of Gwen Stacy is the amazing Spider-Man because it’s like the original comic version but with all the depth that was missing in her original appearance

Actually if you read Ultimate Spider-Man, Gwen was just as social and outgoing as MJ in that universe. Probably more. So she’s still faithful to that and the 616. I say 616 as well because in one of the early Romita Sr. books, it was stated that she loves science, so she has that in common with Peter.

If i were to write spiderman, MJ would NEVER appear until Gwen was killed off. She's the girl that if tragedy never happened between the two, they'd be married. She shared Peter's interests, was smart, pretty but not bombshell, and could handle herself. I'd write her as them being good friends (possibly a tutor assigned by Dr Connors since Peter's grades are slipping). They'd hit it off and date, she'd find out peter is spiderman but they'd make it work. And RIGHT before they graduate college, shes sadly killed. Peter would struggle to open up to women after that. Aunt May would see Peter has been single a while and set up the blind date between him and MJ. But peter is avoiding MJ this time not cause he thinks shes ugly like in the comics but cause hes scared if he dates again, MJ would suffer the same fate.

The original version of Gwen was not bad, but she did blend together in the crowd of blonde love interests in the other Marvel Comics at the time, such as Susan Storm and Karen Page. My favorite version of her is the punk Gwen Stacy from the Ultimate Comics

Funny enough only in the kids, cartoon Spidey and his amazing friends is the only place where I can think of they ever show Gwen‘s mom who is a reinvention of her and George Stacy since she is now a detective while he was reinvented as a city worker .I think.

It's interesting that you say that Steve Ditko was writing Spider-Man at that time, because he was. Stan and Steve had something of a falling out, but Stan down played it, to make it sound like a simple disagreement over the Green Goblin's true identity. Ditko on the other hand gave an interview talking about what happened. Ditko was a believer of Ann Rand's Objectivism, and he very much wanted Peter to fall in line with that (Think The Question, and make him more selfish and unhinged). Stan Lee didn't, they argued, and when Ditlko wouldn't let it go, so Stan gave him complete control over the book, just to shut him up (Ditko goes on to say, that Stan doing this caused him to lose complete respect for Stan. Claiming that a "real man" would give in, he'd fight him over it). During this part of the run, we not only see a less likable Gwen, but also a less likable Peter. Peter was kind of a self obsessed jerk when Ditko took over writing. Things finally came to a head, with Ditko quitting, after Stan Lee refused to fist fight him in the middle of the office (All of this came from Ditko, by the way. He talked about it all in the interview). Ditko would end up going to DC, only to quit for similar reasons. There is a video called "Why Steve Ditko Quit" on KZbin that goes over Ditko's interviews and essays that fleshes this out in far more detail if you are interested.

the reason why many people said that tasm's gwen is practically an adaptation of mary jane, is because she is a mix of the ultimate mj and the modern mj, at the time of her marriage to peter Just like Gwen in Tasm, MJ in these works has a conflicting relationship with Peter being Spider-Man, half supporting, half saying that sometimes this is a bit dangerous and half wanting to help in some way, Mary Jane has evolved A LOT as the editions go by, Gwen in Tasm's films has everything that a good adaptation of MJ needs, she is sweet and supports Peter, but when necessary she speaks her mind, acts on her own and puts Peter where he belongs place, Gwen from the Spectacular cartoon is LITERALLY MJ from Ultimate, she's a childhood friend, she has a crush on Peter, she's a nerd and Spider gwen for me is the best form of a current gwen
