I wouldn't call Norman kind, he was just helpless and needed a place to stay in. If he was still the CEO of Oscorp he would have still remained as reckless and stubborn as he was in the early movies and I'm pretty sure if he ran for office he would also be corrupt, just like in the PS4 game!

Despite them occupying the same body, I’ve never thought of Norman and Goblin as the same person. They’re literally two different people, with one taking over every now and then. This was something I just noticed and is a really special detail. Norman is surprised seeing Peter standing over him and the way he says Peter and his face say it all the he looks down and sees Tobey to his horror and it finally hits him in such a way that truly shows he has no idea or control of what happens when the goblin is in control. So scary and sad. Dafoe is a master actor!

Remember the scene towards the end where doc ock is talking to Tobey and he says “my god it’s good to see you dear boy...you’re all grown up, how are you?” Hes not only talking to tobey, he’s talking to people like us. I was 6 when the first tobey movie came out, I grew up on Spider-Man, he’s my favorite superhero because of those movies. Now it’s been 17 years between Spider-Man 2 and no way home, all of us kids who grew up on these movies, who are part of the Spider-Man culture are all grown up. He’s asking US how we are, he’s telling US how we’re all grown up. In the theatre during that scene I felt like he was talking to me more than tobey. Chills

Norman may not have wanted any of this, but he's the reason a lot of this happened. His arrogance and refusal to listen was the direct cause of the Goblin's existence; he knew well and good that using that serum on himself could lead to "violence, aggression, and insanity", yet he did it anyway. He even started going along with the Goblin's plans in the first movie. I'm not sure why this movie tried to paint him as some innocent bystander when he was very much the opposite. Peter 3 was able to rewrite his traumatic history and rest easier, knowing he had a second chance to do so as well as prevent his younger brother to experience what he did. The second chance he wished he always could have and finally got. Peter 2 finally got to save Norman, which I think is pretty clear that it was always on the back of his mind (especially when we see him talk about making a cure) that he felt responsible. His success in the end happened because of his second chance to redeem himself. And then Peter 1 was able to finally be free from his rage and be reminded that “it’s what we do” to not go ahead and take a life. That we always have a choice to do right from wrong and have that responsibility. In the end, he was free from revenge and like Peter 2, he finally saved Norman and himself. All because he had a second chance. Say what you will about NWH, but I think the central theme of second chances, redemption and responsibility is really where the film shines most and succeeded imo. Such damn beautiful and deserving ties to the three boys and their stories (for now at least).

I'd say the bigger redemption arc for Peter 2 was saving Peter 1 from wrath. He knew it didn't grant him any peace after killing uncle ben's alleged murderer. He saved him from a mistake he made.

@@theramo0 Oh yeah for sure, that's also a great way to look at it. Him preventing Norman's death this time was also definitely part of how it's a reflection of "his younger self/reflection" to not repeat the past. I can kind of view it as a out of context time travelling moment on the side where he's stopping himself from killing Ben's murderer in 2002 back in that warehouse. But even then, it's a beautiful and moving part for Peter 2 to remind his brother to not do this and choose to do the right thing. For him it was a real special moment, just as much as the other Peter's had their own :))

@@theramo0 Peter 2 never actually killed the carjacker. He accidentally killed himself when he backed up and then tripped over a metal pipe, sending him falling out of a window to his own death. Peter didn't really make a mistake there. He simply realized that revenge isn't the answer, because he didn't feel any better after the carjacker was dead. Ben was still gone and it still hurt like hell. He knew Peter 1 would still feel the pain of May's loss, but also an additional feeling of guilt for killing Norman that would eat away at him. I'm sure that the memory of when he believed that he had killed Flint Marko when he was under the influence of the black suit factored into it.

That "What have I done..?" line was so perfectly placed by Willem Dafoe. One look around and he knew... He knew the Goblin probably hurt, killed, and destroyed everything around him like always... The look on his face, she sheer shame, mixed with embarrassment, guilt and sorrow... Giving the line like a second before he's about to cry... He knows in a few moments there is not even a right for him to apologize, despite not being himself, he knows the Goblin was his fault to begin with, and his acts were probably beyond forgiveness nor redemption because of that him.. All of that, just from a simple line. That sold it for me~

This scene is so powerful for a number of different reasons, cause not only is Tobey trying to stop Tom from crossing the line where vengeance can destroy who you are as a person. But I also think saving Norman/Goblin was Tobey's way of making it up to his late best friend; Harry and was honouring him in a sense. Back in his universe, Norman/Goblin died from being killed by his own glider after he attempted to kill Tobey and Harry blamed him for it which changed their friendship forever. Now not only does Tobey have the opportunity to stop it from happening again, but this time he is stopping an alternative version of himself who ACTUALLY wanted to kill him.

Peter Two’s eyes when he’s holding Peter One back from killing the Goblin continue to haunt me. The compassion and understanding of Peter One’s mindset in this moment, because he’s been there: “I wanted him dead. I got what I wanted.” But there’s a sternness and sadness in there too, promising him that “This isn’t what you want and it isn’t what I want *for* you.” It’s another instance of “I just wanted to be like you” and “I wanted you to be better.” The first time Tony made the choice for him. This time Peter’s choosing (literally) for himself. And even after Peter Two initially stepped in, Peter One pushed back again with real force. For a second there, it seemed like he was willing to run through Peter Two in his rage to get past him! And Peter Two just held on with quiet strength and gave him the time he needed to breathe, process, and make his own choice. Everybody praises Andrew Garfield’s acting in the “Peter Three catching MJ” moment to the moon and back (well deserved, of course) but there’s also something to be said for Tobey to convey so much without even saying a word.

That ending fight gets me every time... In the condo, Peter was still a boy/teen: full of childlike hope and even the way he fights, you're made to feel like he's out of his league or depth. Yes, he's dealt with loss and evil before, but that evil is not completely directed at him - this is different. He's stunned by what it feels like when it is and when it's that powerful (when Goblin just laughs as he's being punched, Peter pauses for a moment in shock). Losing May is the turning point (as it always is). The child/teen is gone. He doesn't think he can kill Goblin. He will kill him. Having great or enough power isn't even a question anymore. Then he is stopped, with all that rage still built up. You can feel the lack of resolution for a moment while he struggles against Tobey. But Tobey stopping him doesn't turn him back into the kid again. It shows him a way to live as a man without the need for vengeance, a way to be that powerful, to know he is that powerful, and to finally understand what it means: "with great power comes great responsibility." Just brilliant ❤

That moment at 5:52 is so underrated - if you think back to the final fight at the end of Spider-Man ‘02 when Peter confronts Norman about how he killed the board members, he instantly blames it on the Goblin - maybe out of desperation? Hell, it may have been the Goblin masquerading as Norman trying to weasel his way out for mercy, or something. Either way, I think it says something in 2002 as to how Norman wouldn’t own up to his own mistakes, and that hubris is what ultimately got him killed. Here, instead of instantly blaming whatever happened on his darker half, Norman just goes “What have I done?” and he says it so remorsefully I couldn’t help but feel bad. He realizes he hasn’t been in control since the incident at Happy’s apartment, and seeing his Peter possibly on the verge of death makes him instantly take full responsibility. His expressions say it all: he knows that the Goblin has struck again, but he really doesn’t know how bad the damage was this time. Maybe I’m reading too deep into this, but I friggin’ loved Dafoe’s delivery here.

Great analysis. I noticed this too while watching this clip, and looking back on Spider-Man (2002). It might've been Goblin pretending to be Norman back then, but now here after Peter 1 cured him, Norman realizes what happened and blames himself now instead of Goblin.

It's still great but when you watch it at home, you realize that it is oddly cut. You clearly see the times that went on just a bit to slow so the audience could cheer, settle down and follow the rest of the movie. That cinema experience was insane and I am so happy I was in a screening where the audience was totally invested and cheered for Daredevil as much as for the other Peters...

@@EtwasMartin i notice scenes that are a bit too fast. 10 or even 5 more seconds spent on Andrew saving MJ could have tripled the depth of so many of the movies arcs and themes, and that's not the only instance of such a thing. I suppose that even if this one had amazing writing, better acting, and a little help from rami, it's still the same director who made the previous two atrocities which above all else felt flippant and shallow in the pacing. Still a 10/10 movie, but I understand why many who aren't hard-core spidey fans are underwhelmed by it.
