Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, it's part 2 of Linkara's look at one of the worst Spider-Man stories of all time.
atopthefourthwall.com
Originally uploaded July 30th, 2012.
ORIGINAL INFO: It’s Atop the Fourth Wall’s 200th Episode! What comic could be heinous enough for the position?
RUMINATIONS: One thing that I LOVED about the Cinema Snob’s 100th episode was the cameos that tied more into what he was reviewing (Caligula, in case you didn’t know). That was the direct inspiration, then, for wanting to have so many people appear and try to make deals to undo One More Day. And the idea of witnessing alternate versions of the character opened up more possibilities for cameos. But of course eventually I’d have to acknowledge the deal, and at the time, no one better exemplified evil on That Guy With the Glasses than... well… That Guy with the Glasses. Doug and I filmed his cameo the last night of To Boldly Flee, the same night I also filmed the stuff with Dr, Insano. I knew even by then I wanted the cameo and had a general idea for how it would go, even if I hadn’t written it in full.
Speaking of, this review had to be RUSHED. I had the script done a full two weeks before the episode was to hit the web, but the real issue I ran into was two-fold - one, the week before was the Star Trek IV review… an episode that was longer than normal, which meant I had to devote more time to editing it instead of getting an early start on it. Hell, I actually recorded them back to back, which is why you can probably hear my voice cracking a few times during the review. The second problem was ConBravo. I was going to my first international convention… and I had to get the 200th episode done with in four days. And while I have gotten pretty dang good about this stuff over the last few years, Editing an hour and 15-minute review was still longer than I’d ever gone before and I didn’t have as much time as I normally would.
Add on to that that I actually rewrote the ending. Oh, sure, the stuff with TGWTG was still there, but my original script had a different ending monologue. I think it was probably a bit preachier, though I can’t recall exactly what it was that I said. In the end, it just ended up being better overall this way.

TPrower At the risk of looking like a JMS fanboy (since I usually like his writing, even though I haven't read much of his comics), somehow I get the feeling that he was channeling all of his frustrations with both the comic itself and Joe Quesada in that panel (along with the industry, maybe). Considering that Joe Quesada was making Spider-Man more of his own "wish-fulfilment fantasy" than to the readers, that might explain it. Considering that JMS isn't the type to lash out against his readers (he was organizing live chats back in 1997) and that despite that he wrote it he still wanted his name off that particular issue (despite the fact that it was mostly unchanged), I'm more inclined to feel like that it's more of a stealth jab to Joe Quesada than his readers. Then again, maybe I'm just a fanboy who really doesn't want to hate JMS. Nice to see you there, TPrower (I follow you videos, even though I haven't got an occasion to comment there yet). Didn't expect to see you on AT4W videos.

Satan is the Father of Lies who manipulates via half-truths while holding some "dominion" over the earth as its "god". 3. Even better, there's all of the... undertones with Aunt May and Peter's relationship. I typed 'marriage just now, by accident (for real, I really for real did that), because there seems to be an undercurrent in some of the dialogue that Peter doesn't love Mary Jane, he loves Aunt May. On top of that, yeah, that girl introduced was named after Joe Q's daughter that Joe Q wanted Peter DIVORCED (sorry, deal with the devil or not, their marriage was still annulled f**ko) so he could bang her with his Spider-D**k to shoot his spiderwebs all over her because that's a TOTALLY normal and not at all creepy thing to want- your fictional character banging a character named after your daughter and to annul his marriage to get back with his 147 year old Aunt.

Realization: “Into the Spider-Verse” covers a lot of the same ground as OMD re: different paths that Spider-Man could have gone down, pushing loved ones away, blaming others vs. yourself, the pain of losing family, and taking responsibility for your actions - but manages to do it without (a) calling the viewer a loser for enjoying superheroes, (b) treating all of the main characters as useless, unlikeable brats, or (c) involving Satan eating a marriage. Edit: Also it features both a little girl Spider-Man AND Spider-Ham himself

Going off of what Linkara said in the last part, the writer's and editor's refusal to let Peter grow up kind of lead to a weird trend in the last couple years where the most interesting Spider-man stories didn't have Peter as Spider-man. Miles Morales, Spider-Qwen, and Superior Spider-man were all a welcome relief from Peter's incessant whining about "power and responsibility." When Otto Octavious is a better Peter Parker than Peter Parker, you know some serious changes are in order.

If all of those mystical heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe couldn't fix a bullet wound, then why not ask them for help to go back in time? No Way Home did this, but much *much* better! Here’s a list of good differences! *Spoiler warning!* Peter’s loved ones got negatively affected by the world learning his identity, but there’s no rush to fix everything for most of the movie. Peter goes to Dr. Strange for help, and Dr. Strange actually *can* help! Linkara wondered why Peter Parker makes decisions that a teenager would make, and Tom Holland portrays Peter Parker as a teenager. Aunt May’s fatal injury in the movie actually is a legit fatal injury that no one could’ve possibly helped with, due to how fast she died, unlike in this story, where Aunt May has plenty of time to get help, but everyone who should be able to help just shrug and go “There’s nothing I can do.”. The choice Peter makes at the end is exactly what Linkara wanted from this story that wanted to go for the Tragedy route; Peter sacrificed his own happiness so that everyone he knows and loves can live happy lives. Funny enough, in the movie, Peter is actually helped by _a_ devil. If I missed something, or I got something wrong, please let me know.

One thing I thought of... if they ever decided to go back to this story and try to make sense of it (or better yet, fix it so that things went back to how they used to be), wouldn't it make some sense if Peter didn't actually meet Dr. Strange, but Mephisto diguising himself as Dr. Strange? So rather than all those people being unable to help Aunt May because of "reasons", it would be Mephisto tricking Spidey into thinking there was no saving Aunt May. That's what I would have done. And then have Mephisto rub Peter's face in it. "Wow, you're gullible! Did you actually think the Sorcerer Supreme was unable to save your aunt? HAH! No, that was all me messing with you! You didn't actually talk to all those people, I just created an illusion to make you THINK you did! God, that was hilarious! And you swallowed it, hook, line and sinker! You got to have a loving wife, a woman who treated you like a mom until you were in your teens and young adult and old enough and be financially stable enough you have a life.

They keep saying that the marriage had to be removed to tell good stories. But that's ridiculous! I can think of ways that the stories after this could've been made without One More Day. Brand New Day: Go ahead and introduce new villains. You don't need to get rid of the marriage to do that. The new job at a lab could also be told with the marriage. The relationship with Carlie Cooper: That was a mistake from the beginning, so it wouldn't be much of a loss. Spider-Island: Really, not much would have to be changed. Just get rid of the relationship with Carlie Cooper and it still would've been good. At Earth's End: They were hinting at the two getting back together, so it wouldn't have been hard to have MJ still be married to him. And it might've been good to have her get involved the same way she did in Spider-Island. Superior Spider-man: Yes, I am even including this one. Mary Jane could've been quick to suspect something was wrong. Maybe staying with Peter to find out what's going on. She could even figure out the situation and try to out him, but Ock would be covering his tracks better in this version and making it harder to tell this isn't the real Peter Parker. Spider-verse: Technically, a few Mary Janes were involved, so why not have the main one come along with a power suit? What they're doing right now would be a tougher to make happen, with Peter running his own company and MJ at Stark Industries. But that only ended up happening because Brian Michael Bendis realized nobody was using the character at the time. He was trying to save her from fading into the background.

The tragedy? Not arguing the MJ/Peter marriage. but I would have been ok with Aunt May dying. Not doing anything caused Bens death. Doing something caused Mays death. Peter still gets to live with his old question of to be spiderman or to not be spiderman and this would have added to that. Plus it would have moved the story of Peter Parker forward. It would have been another chapter in the characters life. And let's be honest. Had she been in the room with Mj, Peter, and Mephisto, she would have slapped her family until they realize that a woman with ten years left at best is infinitely worth the sacrifice of TWO people with THEIR ENTIRE LIVES TOGETHER. Instead, we get that giant middle finger of a reset button that comic companies love to give us. On a similar note. I would have been ok if Azrael had become the new Batman in Knightfall. A little work with the character was needed to make him more likable, but it could have been done. Batman would become an ageless guardian as they continue to pass the mantle on to the next worthy shoulders (in this case, Azrael). But no. Bruce Wayne is Batman and we can't have anything else done with the character. The stagnation of comics is why I have dropped out almost entirely.

Cockroach Charlie I've read that the reason why Doug Moench made Azrael into Batman and then had Bruce Wayne come back and take him down was because Doug wanted to prove a point. In 1993 when Knightfall came out, overmuscled, angsty, and excessively brutal antiheroes like Cable and Youngblood were the trend of the day, and Moench wanted to show that these characters were not as good as the iconic superheroes of comics and that, in essence, the old ways were best. He made Azrael into Batman because he wanted to show that the Liefeldian trends of the 90s went against what the character was supposed to be and that no matter what, the best superheroes and the things they stand for and represent will always come out on top. It's the same point that Mark Waid was making when he wrote Kingdom Come. As well, the best stories of Bruce Wayne being a mentor for a new Batman will always be the Batman Beyond TV series.

Rewatching this and had a thought for a set of names. I'm not a comic reader (trying to get into them more but wow, there is a lot) but uh..... two parter that deals with the deal being undone through something... here are my names: 1) A day lost. 2) A lifetime gained. General idea currently floating in my head goes something like this: A day lost Peter has to go through some harsh, unfair and convoluted test or trial, at the end of which he has to endure 24 hours of non-existance, while observing new york, all of it all the time. And all the crime that happens in that time. All his villains running free and doing what they want. Maybe even killing May and MJ. At any point he can jump in and stop them. But if he does he fails the test. If he manages to endure seeing what would happen if he weren't there, which wouldn't actually happen but be more of a dream/what if case, he can undo the deal with Mephisto. But MJ doesn't know this yet. A lifetime gained Peter's efforts to get back with MJ, his best attempt to win her back and restore her memories. In the final scene(s) we see the two of them, first crying as they realize just what they both had to endure, and that somewhere they'll always know they gave up on one another. Then smiling and happy, as they know that despite everything, they did get back together. However long it took, however painful and hard it was, both to be apart and to get to where they could be together again, in the end, together they are at their best.

I have a solution that doesn't retcon or rewrite One More Day. It actually defines why Peter is never allowed to grow up. It allows for more interesting stories. It promises a time when Peter might grow up. It explains why Mephisto took their marriage rather than their souls. Quesada and Strazynski argued about the effects and the details, but both agreed that Peter can't get too far from his roots or his fans will get bored. So they will go around and around creating Deus ex machinas to ensure Spidey remains a teenager. So roll with it. Peter Parker's off being Spiderman, swinging around and leaving the scene where he just stomped the Rhino when suddenly he's struck with shattered visions. Memories of his time with Mary Jane. A life lost. And a staredown between Mephisto holding a snowglobe of him and MJ... and the GrandMaster. Confused by what the images mean, he decides to try and reach out to Mary Jane... but her phone is busy. He contacts her boss (be it Amanda Armstrong or newly uncomatose Tony Stark), and they tell him MJ is in Latveria to help with the transition from Doom-ocracy to democracy. However, sunspots are causing problems with the wireless communications and phone calls to Latveria are being jammed. He tries to get a plane ticket... but Latverian anarchists bomb every airport... simultaneously... only minutes before he was about to buy the ticket. Odd. Starting to get worried, Peter calls MJ's boss back and asks to borrow a plane to go check on her. But wouldn't you know it, between MJ in Latveria, the boss, and all the various Iron man supporting characters, there are no planes for him to borrow. And the Xmen's Blackbird jet is currently being repaired from a freak accident or villain attack. The news says the terrorists have been rooted out and Peter even sees MJ in the background of a press meeting with Latverian leadership. Relieved, Peter sits back down, thinking he'll contact MJ later and see if she knows anything, just glad she's not hurt. A bit too glad, seeing as she's just a business acquaintance and he's currently shacking with a woman already. Huh... As soon as he thinks that, another burst of visions overwhelm him, of him and mary jane happy together. But also mixed in are visions of Mephisto and the GrandMaster, and he hears Mephisto say "Give me my portal and I'll return your pawns to their proper places, Elder." He wakes up on the floor, bloody nose and crying, and MJ has collapsed on TV with similar symptoms. Fearing that whatever's happening may get worse, Peter goes to visit the Sorcerer Supreme. Visiting Doctor Strange, the Doctor can't find anything wrong with him. When he asks to be sent to Latveria to check on MJ, Strange winces and apologizes. A planetary alignment has blocked off Latveria from being the target of transportation magic. At this point, Peter loses his patience. Phones not working is annoying. Planes not working is a coincedence. Now the literal planets are blocking him from connecting with his wife. Wait, wife? With that thought, he feels his feet slip out from under him and he collapses on the Sorcerer Supreme's floor. He has a nightmare of Mephisto staring down the now visibly tired Grandmaster. Mephisto laughs before simply tossing the snowglobe onto the floor, shattering it. He wakes up on a floating rug in Strange's house, surrounded by various floating colored crystals. He remembers everything from the pre-OMD timeline. Strange tells him that when he reached down to help Spidey, Strange's memory also recovers and remembers the events of OMD, how May's death was a "point of temporal contention" and he could not intervene and could not even reveal why he could not intervene. All the signs pointed to May's death needing to be addressed by a higher power, and how he needed to ensure the balance by convincing Peter that there was no hope, creating the illusion that Peter had talked to everyone possible. Spiderman talks about the deal with Mephisto, shocked that he was willing to deal with the devil. A new voice reminds Peter that a lot smarter men in much worse situations have been manipulated into deals with Mephisto. Strange, recognizing the magic of Mephisto both in his missing memories and the whispering that convinced him to lie to Peter, brought in Johnny Blaze, friggin Ghost Rider, given the history between Ghost Rider and Mephisto. The voice of the Grandmaster shakes the halls of the sanctum, stating it has gone far enough, and instantly Peter, Johnny, and Strange are teleported to the GrandMaster's lair, along with Mary Jane. Fully remembering their past, they embrace and hold each other. Exhausted and frustrated, the Grandmaster explains. The GrandMaster, all powerful being and pathological gambler, is playing a long game with a rising evil, across dimensions and time. Everything he's done in the Marvel canon, from his attempt to hook up with Dazzler to his battle with Zemo, even the wager with Krona, has been subtle manipulations. During the short time where he bent reality, he saw a distant threat in time, and has been subtly shaping Earth's heroes into who they need to be when the time comes. And Spiderman was young, brash, and immature in his vision. Thus, the Game Master has been subtly manipulating Peter Parker's life to ensure "the best spiderman" would be there to play the necessary role. Mephisto, being Mephisto, is happy to manipulate people and cause misery, but was... unhappy to realize that he's been manipulated. To say the least. When he realized the Game Master's plan and how he was being pushed into One More Day, he changes the deal he gave to Peter and MJ, sealing the memories of their marriage away rather than destroying them. He approaches the GrandMaster and threatens to unravel the seal and let Peter Parker forever change back, have his wife back, endanger the Grandmaster's game... unless the Grandmaster opened a portal from the demonic plane of Vril into Earth 616. He shook the snowglobe, disturbing the seal and giving Peter and MJ the visions. And when Mephisto completely undid the seal and it started affecting the timelines of other heroes like Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange, the GrandMaster had to step in. And thus Mephisto's true trap springs. See, the GrandMaster and all the Elders of the Universe are immortal due to Death banishing them and banning them from ever dying. But Ghost Rider doesn't kill people. He skips that part. Mephisto knew that his involvement would bring the Spirit of Vengeance, and the sins of the Grandmaster and all the people he's hurt in his chessgame would drive the spirit mad. Even Peter Parker and Mary Jane's souls were calling for vengeance for their life denied. With the soul of an immortal elder in hand, he could open a dozen portals and spread his demons across the universe. Peter and MJ can't stand by, leaping between the Ghost Rider and the Grandmaster before the Spirit can penance stare the divine soul into Mephisto's hands. They realize that the only way to stop the Ghost Rider is to truly accept and forgive the manipulations of the GrandMaster. The Grandmaster freezes time around the ghost rider, but the fallen angel is already putting pressure on the temporal lock. The Grandmaster impresses upon them two things, the first being that if Spiderman becomes more mature, he will not be the right person for the job only he can do, and the evil will succeed, and the suffering of countless lives across millions of planets will result. The second thing he swears to Peter and MJ is that his intrusion into their lives is temporary, and he'll not interfere in their relationship in such a way ever again. The pair share a look. They go to the shattered snowglobe, looking down at the plastic figures of themselves embracing. They gather the broken glass and put the pieces together slowly, each piece fusing into place. They talk about what they've done since being single. They laugh. They cry. They console each other. They forgive each other. By the time they hold the final piece of glass ready to put into place to repair the snowglobe, they're ready. The Grandmaster friggin BOWS to them, lamenting on what they must do, and how the very maturity to forgive him would doom the world and he looks forward to a time when they can be truly happy. But as he says this, the Spirit of Vengeance breaks free and begins Penance Staring the Grandmaster. Peter and MJ share one last kiss as they push the final piece of glass in together. Everything is back to normal. Peter is swinging away from his victory over the Rhino, MJ is representing Stark Industries alongside Von Doom in Latveria, Doctor Strange is meditating in the Sanctum, and Johnny Blaze is driving down the highway on his bike. The Grandmaster watches all of this, the right side of his face severely burnt from the penance stare. And down in hell, Mephisto smugly gloat about all the trouble he'll be able to cause with his new toy, the freshly damned eye of an immortal elder. Boom. It makes it clear that it was the grandmaster's influence that made peter and mj susceptible to mephisto's deal, why the deal was for their marriage instead of their souls, and their marriage is being sacrificed to save literally trillions and trillions of lives. It explains why nobody could heal a simple bullet wound. It reinforces MJ and Peter as a couple who are willing to sacrifice for compassion. It lets Quesada and co have an excuse to continue writing peter as a teenager until further notice, and gives a villain and story that can justify changing peter into a more mature character. It ensures that their daughter's stuff is still canon. And it puts a new mysterious weapon in the hand of Mephisto. A lot more potential stories. Heck, it even allows for a lot of plot holes to be filled, with the random deus ex machinas or convenient events being the result of the Grandmaster's influence.

Okay, so - I've expanded every comment on this video here on KZbin, looked in the comment sections on your old blog and on your current website, watched your subsequent "top 15 screw-ups" videos, and searched the Channel Awesome forums. I'm *fairly* certain that nobody's pointed this out yet, but as somebody who is completely new to your show I made a sincere effort to make sure this isn't a redundant comment. At 12:14 you make fun of Mephisto's ability to make a declaration covering "nearly all" of the outcomes out of an infinite number of possibilities. Surprisingly, this is a legitimate mathematical concept! It's called "almost all", not "nearly all", and is used to describe situations in which you know that there is a finite number that do *not* fall into the category. There are a couple of different definitions for "almost all", but here are some basic examples: * Almost all prime numbers are odd. You don't need to analyze every single one of the infinite prime numbers in order to verify this; you just need to know that there is only one even prime number (2) and that, by definition, no other prime number can be even. * Almost all integers are composite. There are mathematical proofs that calculate exactly how rare prime numbers get as you get into higher and higher integers. They get rarer and rarer, their proportion gets smaller and smaller, and - as you extend the numbers to infinity - the proportion approaches zero. So even though there are literally an infinite number of prime numbers, almost all numbers are *not* prime. Am I saying that JMS or Joe Quesada were deliberately referencing the mathematical concept of "almost all"? Of course not - they didn't use the term correctly, and I doubt Mephisto has a peer-review-quality proof that proves that lim_{x->∞} ∑(years Peter Parker is happily married on all Earths up to x)/x =0, or (better yet) a formula that precisely calculate "y=number of years Peter Parker is happily married on Earth-x". So while it's almost certainly not being used correctly here, the concept of "almost all" as applied to infinity does exist, and can often be determined without actually needing to sit there and count them one by one.

MJ: It was because I was so far outside your life, I could never do anything to help, I could never be a part of what you do, and you could do it so well that I just... I didn't think you needed me, Peter. That's all I wanted to know, that's all I needed to hear, that you needed me, that you... MJ and Peter hug tightly, both with tears in their eyes... I'd love to see a What If or parody where it gets brought up and Peter and MJ are so disgusted by Aunt May's behavior that they aren't as willing to sacrifice their marriage, as she never told them the truth, even after she learned Peter secret identity as Spider-Man.
@RaphBlade7
@RaphBlade7 2 жыл бұрын
It would at least give "Trouble" a reason for existing and would still be tragic cause Peter would realize the horrible family secret of who his real biological mother is. Also there's a plot twist and it turns out Aunt May knew she would go to hell when she died for her sinful past and ended up learned about Mephistopho's plan from her counterpart Spider-Mam (who either was Peter's mother or aunt in her continuity of origin) so she ensures Peter and MJ will learn the truth to foil Mephistopho's plan, saving their marriage with Aunt May suffering righteously in hell for saving her son Peter and MJ's marriage so they can finally give her some grandchildren. Also Trouble Aunt May ends up taking over Hell and gives Mephistopho the boot.

One More Day could have worked if it stopped just before Mephisto. Peter asks Tony for help but is denied to the face, Tony goes behind Peter’s back and has Jarvis insist to be Aunt May’s cousin to get Aunt May more treatment to hang onto life a little longer. Peter goes to Dr. Strange for help but Steven tells him he can’t help him but offers him his “magic rolodex” and portals him to anybody with even the tiniest iota of a chance to help her. But nobody can. Teleporting him back to New York, Strange gives him a talk that because nobody can save Aunt May, Peter needs to spend what little time she has left with her. His life with Aunt May is over but his life with Mary Jane goes on. Peter learns that he can’t save everybody. It’s another way a reader can relate to Peter and for kids to come to terms with the loss of a loved one.

Actually, and this is something I believe Linkara and the Last Angry Geek pointed out in their crossover review, if everything has remained the same except for Peter and MJ being married, then that mean MJ did at one point get pregnant during the Clone Saga, as several comics Linkara has reviewed will show. That child either died at birth or was made to look like it died so the Green Goblin could kidnap it, but either way, Peter and MJ were going to have a child and if nothing has changed timeline wise other than the marriage, then that means they were going to have that child without being married to each other. In summary, Joe Quesada put no thought into undoing the marriage other than that he wanted it undone.

Amusingly, the ending of the new Spider Man game is basically the opposite of One More Day. Click the Read More for details. So after his surprise appearance (both in terms of showing up two thirds of a way through the game, and in terms of this being his grand debut in the game's universe), Dr. Octopus unleashes a virus that infects a sizable majority of the city, including Aunt May, and sicced the Sinister Six to steal the cure that Oscorp was making. After a grueling final fight, Peter manages to get the cure back from Ock. The dilemma now is that they currently have enough cure for one person and it will take a day to mass produce it, by which point it would be too late for Aunt May. Peter initially contemplates giving the cure to Aunt May, but after a tearful farewell, decides to fulfill the needs of the many and get the cure mass produced.

Story time for me: When I was a kid and this story was being published in the UK under "The Astonishing Spider-Man" comics, I was a HUGE fan of all 3 Sam Raimi films, the 60's cartoon, the 1994 cartoon, the short lived early 2000's cartoon and the movie licensed games, I looked up to those incarnations of Peter Parker because he was relatable, *and honestly I wasn't too different to Tobey Maguire's Peter from the start of the first movie* I decided one day after school to pick up the Astonishing Spider-Man comics as I had never read a comic yet *Handing in my nerd card as we speak* and I when I did pick up the comics.. it was some of the character's lowest points in the comics: Gwen giving birth to Norman Osborn's children, Peter dying *That one was a childhood trauma and a half, being a kid, seeing your hero die and all*, Peter's side story in Civil War (Which got me to HATE the overall story), a Dark Knight Returns clone (and a poor version of it) and finally... One More Day... This... broke me... I couldn't read any future comics for the longest time, and for what it seemed like forever, I only picked up trades of the old era comics before this travesty of a comic. I wanted nothing to do with the future Spider-Man comics after reading One More Day I did pick up future comics eventually, but the damage was done. Unless they undo the Mephisto deal or reboot the whole Spider-Man line, I won't be invested in future stories anymore

Here's an idea how to fix this: Peter starts figuring out something is wrong, as well as Mary Jane. They meet up with each other, interested in this forgotten familiarity. Mafisto gets annoyed by this, and subconsciously threatens them, scaring them to be away from each other. However, they eventually break free from it. At first, only one of them tries to contact the other, while the other just desperately doesn't want to. Through this sub-plot, Peter learns more about responsibility. Then, when they finally break free from the terrors mafisto inflicts upon them, MJ is killed. This sends Peter on a quest for revenge of this, slowly remembering more about MJ, now, and their history. Or at least, thinking to himself: Just think what we could've done together. So now, Mafisto has more of a reason to do this, a long convoluted process to make Peter like this, but I suppose he wanted to make sure Peter blamed himself, in that case, I guess, or something. After killing off MJ's killer, he feels great regret, and along with being a known fugitive, now he's even more of a criminal. So, he tries his best to not be entirely evil during this, helping those in need when he can. However, no one trusts him, so he assumes a new identity. Though, he keeps being tempted to kill people, eventually falling into that. Ashamed of his actions, he decides to go into solitude, escaping from the world. When he returns, he is a villain, but no one knows who he is, as he's formed a new identity. Then it's revealed, and he's brought back, ashamed entirely of what he's done. By now, Aunt May is dead, and there's nothing he can do about. He spends the rest of his days, in a prison cell, after he was imprisoned for being a villain. Then suddenly, he begins to recall the events of OMD more vividly, realizing what he's done. So, he somehow is able to confront Mafisto, I'm sure people who know more about comics can explain that aspect, and he attempts to set things right. He gets in a huge fight alongside that against this devil. After all of that, somehow Peter manages to escape him, Mafisto releasing his grasp he's held over Peter, showing that he's learned responsibility or something. Then, Peter wakes up, on the very day he was going to agree, this time, he doesn't get confronted by Mafisto, instead turning himself in to the police, as he is a fugitive already from Civil War. Now, this may seem like Retconning, however Peter still remembers these events, and has learned from them. Now, all that stuff Linkara said about it can do that stuff. Money helping Aunt May. Now, the question is "Who's going to be Spiderman?" Well, a new person. Perhaps Miles, or some girl. Though, it might be best for them to distance themselves from that name, because it probably isn't a very respectful superhero name. Although, I suppose Peter could be later released, but then he can't become Spiderman again, because he's learned that he should take responsibility elsewhere. Then, I suppose that person could use the name spiderman.

The funny thing about One More Day, is even after it Mary Jane and Peter Parker keep coming together as a couple (albeit unmarried) so the deal with Mephistopho is utterly pointless as their relationship is apparently "too iconic" for Marvel to separate them completely (as I doubt they would kill her off in the prime Marvel continuity cause it would be a Women in Refrigerators retread of the Death of Gwen Stacy and just another in a long list of Spider-Man's loved ones who have been killed) or its a marketing gimmick to entice fans who liked the marriage to read in the small hope that they'll bring back the marriage and/or undo the deal with Mephistopho.

Here's a thought: in the webcomic "Jack", a character, a dead woman in hell, makes a deal with a demon to live again, with the power to see into the future, in return for her soul. Eventually, she uses her power to save some people from death, cheating hell out of souls, and making it so she has to come back. Eventually, the Grim Reaper and a couple of angels go and save her soul from the demon to be reincarnated. The reasoning: demons aren't allowed to bring people back from the dead, so their deal for her soul was null and void. Suppose they did something similar with Spiderman? Imagine Mephisto has Peter and MJ's marriage in, like, a jar somewhere. Some celestial hero like Thor or the Silver Surfer, maybe even Dr. Strange, go and try to take it back. The reasoning: Aunt May was *supposed* to die. Fate dictated that Aunt May die, because if she didn't, the butterfly effect would take root, and a huge cataclysm would befall earth. Because this would affect lives unrelated to the deal, it is officially off. Mephisto knowingly broke it just to bring this apocalypse about. To save the world, this guy has to sit Peter and Aunt May down, and with her blessing, Peter and this guy team up to storm Mephisto's realm in Hell, and take back the marriage.

I don't read comics, but I've an idea for how they could explore the deal with Mephisto more in a way that could lead to it being undone if they wanted. Reveal that Mephisto didn't actually twist time to undo the marriage. He sent Peter and MJ into one of those alternate possible dimensions/timelines he mentioned where they didn't get married, and the Peter and MJ of that universe swapped with them, and the four had memory shennannigans done to change their memory of events. Deep down though they remember the way things are supposed to be, and all this time the Alternate Peter and MJ have been living happily married, but are plagued by doubts and suspicions that something about it isn't right. Likewise, Prime Peter and MJ could feel the same. A confrontation with Peter's alternate self who has a different perception of events and MJ could allow for Prime Peter to undergo growth and development when someone who knows exactly what happened calls him out on his selfish childishness.

The official/technical explanation from the Marvel Database based on the events of OMD and OMIT, is that in Earth-616, everything between 1987 and 2007 happened as we originally saw it. However, there is another reality called Earth-81545, in which the OMIT timeline happened, and Peter and MJ never got married. Then, when Peter and MJ of Earth-616 made the deal, the things that differentiated 81545 from 616 were woven into 616 by Mephisto, and the different stuff in 81545 was the OMIT stuff. That's how they did get married on 616, but their 616 versions' marriage is seemingly erased.

If only that was the case. Thats better than what actually happened. It was with Norman not Harry. Another idea by Joe Quesada, because he thought Peter being a father aged the character too much, and that it wasn't shocking enough.

Looking back at this in 2018, they seemed to have predicted the awful "Peter Parker: Billionaire" arc in this story. I don't think Quesada predicted HOW Pete would get it (Dock Ock switching minds with Peter, using Peter's body to get a doctorate and then building a startup company, then switching minds back to normal and inadvertantly letting Peter inherit the company that just sold a very profitable piece of tech Ock built, making Pete a billionaire) but it did happen... for three agonizing years Peter Parker was as rich as Tony Stark... then he literally blew everything up when Doc Ock demanded the company back and now works at the Daily Bugle, effectively erasing EVERYTHING Peter did from 2008 to 2017. The Bugle being bought out and turned to a tabloid, Peter getting fired for protecting an innocent source, Peter getting a cop roommate, Peter meeting J Jonah Jamison's father and JJJ Sr. dating and marrying Aunt May, Peter's roommate making some shady deals and getting arrested, being replaced with his hot, feisty sister, JJJ becoming mayor of New York and Peter becoming his personal photographer, Peter getting fired from that job for altering a photo to try to protect JJJ, The Daily Bugle's physical headquarters getting demolished in a fight between Spider-man and Electro, Kaine coming back, sacrificing himself to save Peter, thereby resurrecting Kraven the Hunter, and then getting resurrected again, Peter getting hired at Horizon Labs and using their resources to defeat various threats, including the revival of the Sinister Six and the Spider Queen, Peter "dying," and getting possessed by Dock Ock, and, of course, the whole Superior Spider-man/Peter Parker: Billionaire story arcs that I previously mentioned... yeah, Spider-man now acts like NONE of those things ever happened now. There were a few issues dealing with the fallout of his business collapse but right now it's like the series started right after the deal with Mephisto!

14:00 Don’t forget the alternate universe where NC never existed and you were the owner of both Marvel and DC.

If you view Mary Jane as progress in Spider-Man comics and Aunt May as stagnation in the books, this is a worse storyline.

Little May's tearing down of Peter would be nice if it happened in the last issue of Spider- Man ever written.
